Shenloanne
Hi all, I recently pained a LOTR Haradrim that came with the mumakil set and used a layering technique, then when I looked at it, it didn't seem THAT much different to washing it and then drybrushing it with lighter shades. Am I doing this wrong or are they both the different means to an end? lothlorienmoon
It all depends upon the look you're going for. For table top, I use a few layers, then a solid, complementary wash to make a nice, even shift that looks good at about 1 to 3 feet, but held up to your face is far less subtle. If I'm doing something because I want it to look nice, I take time to wet blend and make the layers and gradients far more gradual. When I first started to paint many years ago, a nice few drybrushes followed by an ink wash looked far better then anything else I was trying, because I didn't have the brush control nor the feel for paint consistency that I do now. Round way to arrive at yes. It all depends upon your skill and application of the techniques. BUT if you only stick to doing it one way, then that's the only way you'll know how. If you're just a gamer and not really into the painting, if it looks good, that's fantastic. If you want to be the next Slayer Sword winner, you're going to have to put yourself through the paces, and drybrushing is considered "meh" by most painting competition judges.
