Help with Legion Assault Squad Equipment

Greetings fellow Legionaries,

I'm about to build a 20 men assault squad for a Son of Horus army and I need your assistance about the best equipment for it.

Do you suggest to give them power weapons or plasma pistols upgrades? Currently I'm thinking about 4 power weapons what do you think?

In that case what do you suggest: axes, maces or swords?

Axes gives us nice S5 AP2 attacks but they cannot benefit from Meciless Fighters. Perhaps 2 axes and 2 maces?

Do you think the combat shield upgrade is worth its cost? On 20 men units it's not cheap, even though it's not very expensive

I'm thinking about giving one or two claws to the Artificer armoured sergeant so he can take challange not worth the attention of the Praetor I plan to attach to that unit.

As last info about my plans for that unit; I want to put a Primus Medicae with Jump Pack in that unit and, if I decide to go crazy msn-wink.gif, possibly a Librarian with divination... just for the purposes of rule of cool msn-wink.gif

Any suggestion would be very appreciated.

Thank you for your help.

EDIT:

I forgot to mention melta bombs. Personally I think it's a must for that unit. All of those armour bane attack should take care of most vehicles. At least when saault marines reach them ;)

Definitely melta bombs. Since you're running a big squad I'd probably take five power axes and two power maces. I equip my sergeants with a lightning claw and power fist when they can take both - they are both specialist weapons so you get the +1A. Obviously the 2+ armor save is very useful. I like this combo for sergeants since if you have to accept a challenge with your sergeant he has a chance to swing versus I4 enemy characters... It can really help and looks cool.

Sounds like a very fun unit to run.

I think mela bombs and combat shields should only be used on smaller squads.

What target needs to be hit by 20 melta bombs? Are you hunting warlord class engines?

Combat shields get expensive fast. In larger squads the number of marines should keep them going

As for equipment I say three swords (one on the sergeant) and two axes, for any 2+ you might come across.

Keep the melta bombs on the sergeant and praetor.

2 melta bombs and 19 krak grenades should deal with most problems.

You can take 1 power weapon every 5 models. So a 20 men squad can be equiped with 4 power weapons, plus the sergeant's weapon.

I think the sergeant can take only one weapon. The two specialist weapons build will work for the Praetor ;). Thunder hammer and Paragon Blade with digi lasers: 7 attacks on the charge which can be S5 AP2 murderous strike at I5 or S8 AP2 concussive againsit everything that is a vehicle or have an I higher than the Praetor himself ;)

Anyway back on the Assault squad: yes I think it will be a very fun unit to play

I agree 20 meltabombs may be a little overkilling but just two melta bombs does not guarantee the destruction of a high AV target. Beside 2 melta bombs will not dissuade contemptors from charging you but an entire squad will ;)

Beside it will somehow counter attrition. If your sergeant dies for any reason you just have one melta bomb.

However if you consider the cost of 20 melta bombs you see they are quite expensive, 1/3 of an assault Space Marine cost... it's not cheap.

Dont specialist weapons have to both be the same to grant the +1 attacks?

No, they don't have to be the same. They just have to possess "specialist" USR and you got the bonus attacks ;)
