Greetings fellow Legionaries?

 

What do you think about Legion Outrider squad?

 

I was thinking about adding one Outrider squad to one of the Legiones Astartes army I'm building because bikes seem to be a nice asset in 6th Edition.

 

Then I realized with 5 more points I can field jet bikes and that made me to wonder if the outrider squad is still a good choice.

 

They have the scout USR and can take twin linked plasma guns for every model but the upgrade costs as much as the SM on bike himself.

 

So what's your opinion?

Well...bikes are a nice edition... especially for someone who has to play them with the chaos space marine codex most of the time:D... (forgeworld rules are generally not accepted here :( )

Though if I wanted a biker element in my army I'd personally look to the legion Sky hunter Squadron, give it 6 marines and slap 2 multimeltas in there and run in as a jumpy tank hunter unit. 

And If you dislike the forge world jetbikes as I do: there are alternatives...such as my personal favorite:

Well...bikes are a nice edition... especially for someone who has to play them with the chaos space marine codex most of the time:D... (forgeworld rules are generally not accepted here sad.png )

Though if I wanted a biker element in my army I'd personally look to the legion Sky hunter Squadron, give it 6 marines and slap 2 multimeltas in there and run in as a jumpy tank hunter unit.

It's not I don't like the FW bikes but 3 of them just cost as much as vehicle.

I thought about buying my first sky hunters unit several time but I always used those 140£ for other FW stuff.

I really like to field SM jetbikes, so those Xenos wouldn't be the only ones to field such tech ;)

Anyway back on the outriders; I agree with you. Sky Hunters seems a better choice for mere 5 additional points. The fact you lose scout USR is not a problem since you can moved up to 24" in your first shooting phase.

Outriders give us the chance to play all plasma guns bikers but they are very expensive: you nearly double the cost!

6 outriders with 6 plasma guns, 3 power weapons cost more then 350 pts and you have to add the sergeant and his equipement.

You can give them 3 plasma guns but I suspect the unit is still to expensive for what it can achieve.

Frivolties aside, what do you want to accomplish? Long range mobile support? Then yes jet bikes are your go to but I would shy away from antitank choices because then you'll waste your hb shots....

 

I would personally recommend outriders instead as they can fill both anti infantry and tank better with melta bombs and such and all those beautiful new usr's slapped on them and if you decide to shoot at a tank instead you'll only lose bolter shots, which you should be up to your ears in anyway.

 

Did you decide to play with WEs or SoH instead? If you try We's then you can just build up their bonuses by plowing squad to squad.

 

Does SoH bikers get bulky? Heheheh if they do then they in addition to assault squads can cause hell on terra with merciless fighters......hehhehehe (cue maniacal laughter >:D )

Honestly I was thinking about the footslogging version of my Angron led army we talked about in the HH army lists section ;) and I thought what about some bikes that can bring WE in combat fast? It would be very fluffy (namely getting in CC as soon as possible).

Then I thought about my other project: a Luna Wolves/Son of Horus army based on an extensive use merciless fighters. ;)

The good news is I just read Rulebook FAQs and bikes/jetbikes do not get Bulky... the get VERY bulky! Amazing. I already have a 20 men Assault Squad with Jump pack equiped Praetor and Primus Medicae so I cannot decide if making the bikes WE or SoH.

Anyway do you think the outriders are truly worth their cost? In that case I could have a unit with ease... just some conversion on the bikes I have and perhaps the plasma guns taken from the new RW command squad, or I could even use plasma guns I already have...

On the topic of WE bikes i would def recommend them however I've been leaning towards SoH with that brutal ecksbox huge advantage that they bring with merc fighters....how WEs are being outdone by them idk

I would say that with the new edition bikes are most worth it and that you should probably take only a tl plasma for every 3 guys to keep balance and points

 

....You might also want to give your sarge and whoever else on a bike with a pw a lance instead. Considering that with the bikes you'll dictate where and when they fight it won't be hard to get the bonuses associated with it anyway. Even though bikes r now just T5 and can't b insta gibbed by more weapons, PF and terminators will screw up your day...so stick to a lance or sword bc if u take an axe or fist you WILL lose to a cati termy every time

 

Use your bikes if you choose them to harass the enevitable AC squads and tarpitt advancing tac squads from reaching their objective. If this doesn't "earn their points back," then they sure as heck will prevent your opponent's vital units from functioning the way they need to.

 

In a nutshell....RUN SOME BIKERZ BROTHA! .... Oh and name them hell's angels or angels from hell or anything with those words lol ;)

Very bulky makes Bikes amazing for a SoH army. With every models counting as 3 their Merciless Fightes score will be rarely inferior to the enemy's one ;)

I still believe Sky Hunters are a better cost effective unit then outriders but outriders can take twin liked plasma guns, making gets hot! less dangerous and 1 power weapon every 3 models. Sadly sergeant cannot take artificier armour.

I think power sword is a solid choice for them. Power Lances are nice but there are circumstances when you get charged. It often happen to me when I'm locked in combat from the previous turn. Against TDA mace is nice since wound them on 2+ and strike at yout I. You do not deny their armour saves but neither lances nor swords do it.

However againse MEQ swords/lances seem a better choice... I'm unsure about what to choose, swords or lances...

By the way since you too play WE I want inform you a did a couple of play tests with them, I'll try to share my results with the community as soon as possible.

Back on outriders: what unit size would you suggest?

You can't take Power Lances for them so swords auto-win that scenario biggrin.png Bottom of pg 187

That's not a bad news since I'd have some problem in modelling power lances ;)

So, assuming, we want the outrider to attack at unmodified I the options are Power Swords for MEQ or Power Mauls for wounding TDAs on 2+. Power Mauls would be useful against many xenos, though... if you play with Legiones armies against them ;)
