sabre heavy weapon platform-finalius pattern

alrighty! my finals are finally over and as such i decided to give myself a little treat; two new chimeras and a second hellhound, and an additional infantry squad since one never can have too many of those. as I was staring over the sprues i suddenly noticed the heavy stubbers which i never add on my vehicles and suddenly i couldn't help but think of the sabre platforms. while a conversion with the heavy stubbers would have been somewhat easier I quickly realized I would want the autocannon variant. after some searching through my bitsbox i finally found all the parts needed and began the job of cutting, miscutting, fixing, and gluing it all together. now, 2 hours later I'm proud to present you my own sabre heavy weapon pattern, named the finalius pattern (in relation to ending my finals).

but hey, here's what you guys looked for, the pictures:

It's still a WIP and I'm currently working on the gunner. I still need something to fill in the empty spot of the heavy bolter but don't know what to add, one of the sentinel searching lights perhaps?,

I quite like how I was able to make this thing from scratch.

Components used:

-2 x autocannons

-heavy bolter chimera mounting plate

-left over holding blocks from the manticore (only needed for the deathstrike missile)

-dozerblade hydraulics

-droppod-seat section

-missile pod backside

-2x missile launcher face protection plate.

-heavy stubber mounting arm

-heavy stubber handles

-heavy bolter ammo box-front

-extra chimera plating

all in all it was an easy conversion, planning and looking for suitable bits being the most time consuming part.

Hope you all like it!

nice work there hendrik! youve done a really nice job. what are the points costs for your weapon platform and are they twin or twin linked?

well it's actually an official 40k approved FW unit in the aeronautica book. sabre platforms can be taken as part of platoons instead of heavy weapon teams. one platform cost the same as a platoon command squad and comes with twin linked heavy bolters. the upgrade to twin linked autocannons costs the same as taking two vox casters.

I've currently finished the gunner+ aditional gunner and added a searchlight. unfortunatly i've not been able to make pictures of it yet, but expect an update soon

Very nice work, Hendrik!  Can we get a shot of this from behind?

The only suggestion I'd make is to mount it on a 40mm or 60mm base, to more closely reflect the size of the "real" Sabre platform, and maybe make it less tippy.  A 60mm base would give you room to mount your (optional) extra crew on it as well.

I thought about a bigger base but unfortunatly my bitbox is lacking those. and since my opponent rarely field flyers so far i won't be using this one that often.

as for more pictures:

  • 2 months later...

with the easter hollidays kicking in i gave myself a break from university today and altered the finalius pattern. the most notable change was the standing deck. here's the result:

Very nice tutorial!

My only problem is I don't have a great amount of IG bitzs, so acquiring all the bitzs shown here may cost me more than buying the actual FW model sad.png

Perhaps when I will expand my IG collection.... sadly every time I plan to do it there is always a new project I feel the need to start... sad, I know...

that's why i did these conversion, most parts were left overs/unused parts, in fact all of them were. offcourse the forgeworld model is much better so if you can afford it i'd say get it!

Your pattern is very good as well. As I said the only problem is I have very few IG bitzs ;)

well a chimera kit+heavy weapon team box should give you almost all the components needed for this conversion and nothing would be wasted since you could still build both the chimera(just glue on the rear) and heavy weapon team(as either a mortar, lascannon, missile launcher of heavy bolter team)

That's a very useful info. I even have chimera bitzs (one of few IG kits I have ;)

I should give it a try when I decide to buy a heavy weapon team... too much projects... and everyone seem to have good reason for being top-priority... ;)
