New Modeller and Painter Questions

Recommended Posts

Okay, I'm just getting back into mini-wargaming and I have a few questions:

1) How can I create decent battle-standards to hang off the standard bearers staff? I'm guessing something along the lines of find the image you want, resize, print, then what? How do I make it more solid? What software do you recommend? What is a good place to find Space Wolves (my army) icons?

2) I just clear coated my first finished squad and there is a fine white particulate covering each model. This really detracted from an otherwise great looking squad. In your experience why does this happen and how can I prevent it from happening? For reference I used Purity Seal from GW, which is a matte clear coat finish.

FWIW back in the day I was Wood Elves, sold that army, took a very long break and now I'm starting a Space Wolves army.

For banners you could try imprinting a design onto rolled out Green Stuff or just use freehand.

As far as the fine particulates you noticed, this is an issue with spray varnishes that can sometimes occur for various reasons - not shaken enough, too humid, too cold, too far away, bad batch, etc. It's a risk you take when using any spray on varnish unfortunately.

Razblood is right about the spary on varnish. The particles you are refering to is often know as "frosting" due to the apperance it sometmies creates. I peronally find compressed cans of spray varnish a bit risky when I want to varnish my models as there are a lot of factors as Razblood mentioned that can effect the outcome. I personally use either a brushed on matt varnish, or I use Vallejo matt varnish through an airbrush. Both of these methods for have perfect results and no frosting. You could fix the frosting by going back over the model using one of the above methods.

As for banners, apart from printing a ready made design the best method is to try free-handing one yourself on a sculpted green stuff or other modelling material.
