Primers.

Hey well me and a friend have just started warhammer 40k by buying Assault on Black Reach.

We've decided to do Blood Angels for the Space Marines. We found a tutorial in which the guy primed the miniature Blood Red. I was just wondering if someone could tell me about how much paint would i need for all of the Space Marines in the box? And how much Abaddon Black will i need to Prime all the Orks?

Contents of the box:

10 Tactical Marines

5 Terminators

1 Dreadnought

1 Captain

20 Ork Boyz

5 Ork Nobz

3 Ork Deffcoptas

1 Ork Warboss

It's not advisable to prime with standard paints such as Blood Red as they tend to chip and rub away unless varnished <_<

Your best bet for Primer if you want to start from Red is Army Painter Pure Red spray (most online stores carry it) add pots of Mephiston Red, White Scar, Abbadon Black, Leadbelcher, Averland Sunset & Warpstone Glow and that'll do you for a basic Blood Angel scheme.

Add a can of Black spray & pots of Caliban Green & Mournfang Brown and combined with the other paints you'll have enough for a decent basic Ork scheme.

Just make sure to paint from a palette (an old plate will do) and to thin the paints on the palette with around the same amount of water and paint and you should find a couple of coats of each colour will do the job.

I advise you check out a site called Beasts of War and check out the painting tutorials on there to get you started ;)

You can, but it would be a good idea to test it on some of the sprue the minis come attached to as some sprays can damage the plastic that minis are made of (personal experience here laugh.png ) and ruin your models.

Also make sure it's a Matt spray as you'll find it a bugger to paint over otherwise.

But the Army Painter and GW sprays are formulated specifically for the purpose of priming models and as such most painters would recommend them over generic spray paint.

I use Army Painter Pure Red for my Blood Angels and it is well worth the cost. Plus it is serves as both an undercoat and a primer so you just need to apply it right to the model let it dry and you are ready to paint.

Razblood gives some color options to start with, but it is really up to you. If you choose a complicated red color recipe you will need to do this for each model. Test some recipes out if you can. The best idea is to get you started off well.

thanks for the advice, but me and my friend had a bit of a disagreement on who would be space marines so we bought Dark Vengeance instead so he could be chaos, and i've decided to go with dark angels instead to match the models in the set

Regardless, it's still worth priming your figures.

And to respond your earlier statement on the cost of coloured primers, I'd say that given the cost of the miniatures and the number that you can undercoat with one can of spray, it's a worthwhile investment for just how much better your results would be.

Plus if you were to undercoat by hand, you could EASILY use the same value of GW paints compared to using spray for batches.
