I cant believe the name Archangels wasnt all ready taken by a legitimate 40k chapter!!!!

 - So my chapter will be a chapter that originated from the original knightly orders of Caliban.  When the Dark Angel legion was formed they became kind of the "spec ops" wing of the Dark Angels.  They were assigned the difficult, secretive tasks that Johnson needed done quick and efficently.  They were made up of the best of the best.

When the Legion was broken into chapters they were an easy and quick choice for a chapter.  On the surface they were their own seperate chapter, but only on the surface.  Secretly they still act as the "spec ops/intelligence" branch of the Dark Angels.  They answer to the Inner Circle above all else.  When the Inner Circle has decided on a distinct course of action and need a tool to enforce their will, the Archangels are that hammer.

This is what I got so far.

If they were the best of the Dark Angels Legion, I would think that they would have been split among the 2nd Founding successors.

More importantly, I would tread with caution any time you want to play with 2nd Founding successors. The details of the Great Crusade and the legions are slowly being solidified through both the Horus Heresy novels and the Imperial Armour books. If your aim is to create a chapter that exists in a personal vision of the game universe, there's no problem. If you're trying to mesh this with the commonly accepted "canon" game universe, however, you're going to run into problems when you create an organization that isn't even hinted at in the official publications.

Your basic concept can be achieved without incorporating the "Mary Sue" elements. Perhaps this chapter was part of the legion and it was Jonson's (note the spelling msn-wink.gif ) choice for irregular warfare. It wasn't the "best of the best," however. That goes against the core concepts of the Unforgiven and the Deathwing/Ravenwing as the pinnacle organizations. Tactically, the chapter resembles the Raven Guard and its successors in its approach to warfare, though it supports the Hunt for the Fallen, including providing intelligence to the other Unforgiven chapters.

For what it's worth, there is at least one other DIY chapter that uses the "Archangels" name. You don't have to change it if you like the name (and who wouldn't?), but I figured you'd want to know.

While it is certainly possible for your chapter to believe this, it actually being true is a bit "my chapter's better than yoursish". Plus, the objections Brule noted above.

Again, making your chapter really special in the "better than others" sense, rather than the "unique" sense.

Plus, the Deathwing (and other First COmpanies) are already that hammer.

What do you want out of your chapter? What do you want them to be like? What appeals to you about the Dark Angels? What do you dislike about the Dark Angels?
