DA Flyer: Dark Talon or Nephilim?

Hey everyone,

I really like the looks of the new model for the Nephilim/Dark Talon so I really want to get one. My question would be, which one is better? The stasis bomb and hurricane bolters seem cool on the dark talon. Although the Nephilim can get a twin-linked lascannon AND the avenger megabolter along with the missiles. So its a tough choice for me. I know the Dark Talon also gets the rift cannon, but that just doesn't seem to have enough punch for me. Right now I'm leaning more toward the Nephilim for the bigger bang.

The armies I tend to go up against most are Tau or other Space Marines and I tend to run a multi-wing list with a little of everything. Although I am slowly building up my 1st and 2nd companies, so I'll eventually start running dual-wing lists.

Im making a Dark Talon as we speak, but i doubt ill ever use it once i buy my kheres contemptor dreads...

Anyway against what i face most (vendetta/Valk) spam, the nephellim is useless... and the Dark talon will be aswell.

Damm thats not even an advice lol.

The Neph does most damage against ground units, i suppose it would work ok vs tau as they lack a flier.

This was something I contemplated a while back, and I decided to go with the Nephilim with the main gun magnetized. If I expect other fliers or armour, I can go with the Lascannon, and otherwise I can go with the Mega bolter. The Nephilim is also in my opinion the best-looking flier GW has put out, and it's ours so I would be using one only for that. I don't care if it's a bit overcosted for the current flier meta. smile.png

I think to get the best out of the Dark Talon, you really need to take it into account when designing your list. The Nephilim however is an all-rounder you can chuck into any list you are running, and expect some results. The Dark Talon is a more elegant tool, and that's why I decided to save it for the next flier kit I buy.

If I had to bring one id choose the dark talon. Both flyers are built for anti infantry IMO but only the dark talon brings something unique. As stated a little more thought is required but its weapons have good potential. stasis bomb a unit on arrival then blast and potentially blind another unit is pretty good especially against armies like crons, orks etc. Incapacitated is just as good as dead in many cases (think suppression fire of last edition on mech). Also the hurricane bolters go nicely with SoD.

Right now my flyer of choice is the Storm Talon. 50 Points cheaper with a betyter weapons package.  In Anti Air mode a rending TLAss-Cannon, and S8 Missiles. In Anti Personnel Mode a rending TLAss-Cannon, and S7 H3 Missiles, in Anti Armor Mode a rending TLAss-Cannon and S9 TLLC This is a much better though out platform than what we were given.

Now I know the kool-aid drinkers will argue the DA Flier is loaded for a specific mission, Hunt the Fallen. Sorry I cant accept that or own fluff negates the argument of such a specific weapons platform that might be needed once very century. And yes we have three good anti personnel weapons on board, but their all anemic at best.

If we had a viable Air Superiority weapons load I could accept it, right now I'll be getting a couple more Storm Talons instead.

$5 worth of magnets and have both...  And have magnets left over for Termies...

If you are spending as much as a land raider, you might as well get both choices out of it...

And when the rules roll around again in eight years maybe it will be good...   Or is that me being overly optimistic against my 18 years of experience with this army...

Allying, pueriedues?

I have a storm talon, and I was thinking of running it with a Dark talon in an allied list for an escort. 2 fliers in one turn looks like so much fun biggrin.png

Which one would be better to run with?

Yeo I picked up the Storm Talon last summer while away on business, didn't know at the time I could not use it. It proved itself very capable as an air superiority fighter against a flying Daemon creature thingy, and a pair of Ork flyers. I use the Allie Foc as: Libby Tac Sqd Storm Talon, though this may change with the new DA/Dex.

Which one to run with??? I see the DA flyers as dedicated ground support platforms , ala A-10 Warthog. Depending on your personal concept I would use the CSM/ST as air-cover to protect the DA flyer. Just reading the rules I am leaning toward the Neph over the DT just because it is not as specialized, and has better stand off range 36 v 18 inches.

But once all the unique ammo is used whats better, 2X Hurricane Bolter & Rift Cannon. Or, AMB & TLHB?

Somehow, the Nephelim appeals to me more than the Dark Talon. It seems more capable on its own as opposed to having to work with other units. Potentially more versatile. Plus, I just wish "stasis bomb" and "rift cannon" were as cool as they sound. While cool, they're missing... something. Dark Talon may still be better, but I'll probably go with Neph if I get one at all (or go magnetized).

Wimpy is an understatement ;)

I wonder if GW actually wants to sell a decent number of these things or not. I want to buy three but as they suck I'll pass.

Headscratches...realises they are a "model company'...laughs at self for having hopewallbash.gif ...continues to dream about a book FULL of sensible, balanced rules...wakes up and smells coffee, yummy.

If you are listening GeeDub overlords; update our fliers in a second edition of our dex (just like in 3rd) we won't mind too much. Just remember to get some of your lawyers to proof-read it after your final decisions on things!!!

Toodleooo

To be very honest, i bought the flyer with the neph. in mind, built it, and you know what, it looks awesome. that was my main reason for buying it.

on the battlefelid is it worth its points.....meh im not decided yet...i fielded it only twice now.

First against space puppies, with assistance from a long range typhoon it took out a big squad of grey hunters and a unit of long fangs.,  so awesome so far.

second time against a dark angels "fallen" army, was a comined DW/RW vs DA:PA, it consistantly puts out 3-4 kills per shooting turn, that it could see.

bottom line with the below setup:

Avenger mega bolter

blackstrike missiles

TL Heavy bolter.

against ground troops

thats 10 shots at BS5, and mainly S6, hitting on 2's wounding on 2's, even with a 3+ save, its 3-4 dead every turn.

use a typhoon or two to mop up from long range, boom, no more squad.

its what ive expericed so far, i haven't come up against another flyer yet.
