Hot glue lightning bolts?

Thoriam

Recommended Posts

Hi all

This is my first post, so sorry if its in the wrong place. I've had an idea to convert a rune priest for my space wolves army and had the idea of having him shoot lightning bolts out of his hand ( Star Wars style ). I was just wondering if any of you had any ideas on how to accomplish such a task. I was planning to use thin streaks of hot glue.

Thanks in advance

Put the image URL between "img" tags, like so:

Alternatively, there's an icon in the bar above the reply box that looks like a white rectangle with a blue and green design (it's supposed to look like a painted landscape). Click that, paste the image's URL, click OK, and the board adds the image for you.

More on-topic for the thread, though, I'm a little skeptical of your results. Maybe it's just me, but they seem too thick and not-jagged for lightning. It looks good for some kind of direct force-blast, but not so much for lightning in particular.

Its a nice idea and a very good try, but in my opinion it looks a little too much like his arm has mutated into a mass of tentacles, even when painted up, I can imagine it to still look a little odd. I would go with the tutorial Bung posted, it looks more realistic.

On another note though, using your method, I would do it out of the end of a plasma cannon, with a small ball bearing on the end of it to simulate the plasma ball and its streak, stipple on some liquid green stuff for the texture and use object source lighting. That would look killer.

Mike.

Thanks for the feedback, I'm hoping to add a little liquid green stuff to make it a little more realistic, then on with the paint. Will post more pics after he is painted.

Motorbike mike - loving the idea of the plasma, will defo try that too, maybe out of my dreadnought.

Honestly? I would use either roots (as another poster has linked to a tutorial) for an organic, natural look to the lightning or florist wire for something more arcane.  Florist wire is very thin compared to say, a paper clip, and with the right tool- a pair of tweezers- can be bent into unnatural angles as well as gentle curves.  The result can really look like some kind of eldritch storm.

To hide the insertion of the lightning rods (no pun intended), I would use some steel wool put at the base of the hand as a sort of storm cloud- making the librarian appear to have a maelstrom of warp lightning coming out of his hand like a contained thunderstorm!
