Grimfoe
Those of you that have been around for awhile may remember me from years past. I was getting back into the hobby years ago and teaching my kids how to play. I hadn't played since 2nd edition. (back when the game was at it's best) Business and some family illnesses/deaths got in the way and put that on hold. Recently my kids began asking again and we have some time, so we're back at it. My sons are playing Orks and Crimson Fists. My daughter is playing Chaos marines. We're hard at work painting and playing around our softball/baseball, football, school and work schedules. More to the point, I painted a test mini several years ago. It wasn't blue or even blue/grey. It was grey. It looks MUCH better than what I painted in the past, so I've decided to go grey with each mini as I refit it from 2nd edition to 6th. No more do we need swords on every model for the parry.....Now we'll be adding plasma to every squad and fitting up new, old wulfen models to include with each Grey Hunter. Anyway, here you are. Comments are welcome and appreciated. Thanks. I tried to keep with the 2nd edition theme quite a bit. I kept the same type of pack markings and company badges. I also painted the plasma guns yellow because that's how we rolled in the 90's. We didn't really do much weathering back in the day and I hand painted everything because I think that looks more rough and in keeping with the whole space viking/barbarian theme. Codex marines have perfect badges, etc. Not space wolves. Brother Olaf
This sounds familiar! I myself have just rebuilt my Space Wolves to 6th Ed from 2nd, (and yeah 2nd Ed was awesome) i kept my original pack markings and mini's, just added the brilliant plastics and swapped out the occasional arm. the old metals really stood the test of time and still look amazing with their more up to date brethren. Good luck with the rebuild mate, i'm thoroughly enjoying mine :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/271016-going-grey-teaching-an-old-wolf-new-tricks/#findComment-3301095 Share on other sites
Anaraion
Nice detail especially in the shoulder pads... Well done!! Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/271016-going-grey-teaching-an-old-wolf-new-tricks/#findComment-3302377 Share on other sites
greysquigg
I'm amazed at how well the old models stand up to the new ones. You've done a great job well done! SamaNagol
Detail-wise the old models are still amazing. Unfortunately when you put them side by side they do look really puny by size comparison Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/271016-going-grey-teaching-an-old-wolf-new-tricks/#findComment-3302698 Share on other sites
Wolf of Russ
Nice work. Sounds somewhat familiar too. I have played my Wolves for 20 years, on and off. I've decided that I'm moving from blue/grey to grey as well. Will be repainting all my old, classic minis. Will be watching this thread! greysquigg
Detail-wise the old models are still amazing. Unfortunately when you put them side by side they do look really puny by size comparison I disagree with the size problem. I find that once you're looking at them on a board you don't notice it at all. If anything you get more character in your squad. Not all wolves are the same size. Valerian
Very nice, Grim, and welcome back. You have been away from The Fang on campaign for a long while. pedrogzc
The chest of old miniatures are less bulkier, and they tend to be a little shorter, but if you mount them in a taller base, the different size is unnoticeable. Grimfoe
Thanks, for the kind words, guys. I'll be working to update with new photos, but I have to spend the next week or so helping my kids get ready for their first tournament. I'll be painting Crimson Fists and Orks for the next week or so, and then more wolves. Also: I need to fire up the airbrush. I think that will really save me some time. Anyone recommend a particular tutorial? I thought I had saved some of DV8's, but I can't find them. Thanks. Grimfoe
Minor update. I'm still working on Crimson Fists and Orks for my sons' armies in the tourney this weekend, but Pedro Kantor has contacted the Fang with requests for additional support. As a result, Njal will be taking a small strike force to help the Crimson Fists this weekend. This has allowed me to spend a little time painting wolves, as well. Here are before and after pictures of Njal: Before: After: You'll notice he's much bigger now and not nearly as blurry...... I'll work on my photography skills a little more as I continue to post. Grimfoe
Thanks, guys. I appreciate the complements. I'm a little rusty and painting has taken much longer than I hoped. I'm trying out the airbrush in the next couple of days, so I'm hoping to speed things up a little. I'll post more pics as I have them. I'll probably try the airbrush out on my son's crimson fists, lol. No point in making a mess on my wolves. I'll learn on the codex marines. Ghostwolfalpha
I too am going with grey instead if blue/grey. Oddly enough, my first army was orks and my second Crimson Fist, but that was when 5th ed first started. I really like the change over to grey on njal, he just has a more commanding appearance. I know this is a SW thread, but I would really like to see your Pedro Kantor as he is my favorite vanilla SM character. I know this is a bit late, but good luck to you and your pups. Keep us posted with all the sweet pics. Forté
Really nice work here and nice to hear someone bringing their kids up the right way. As for DV8, use the advance search function. He went a bit quiet but everything should still be there. Check out Iacton Qruze too. Also uses grey but with a slight blue tint (also did the sexy SW dread which I'm sure you've seen around in pictures. Skull head, huge claws). Welcome back too. Wolf wiz and elk waiting for you.
