Realistic planet maker

Recommended Posts

Hello, I'm looking around for a software or a website that is able to create, design etc... a world, to look like the one you can find in a Imperial Armour or Codex, or in the rule book.

I already know this website but it is not satisfying.

I also got the Planet render for gimp, but that's a lot of work for a single planet, and I got trouble to create a nice looking cloud cover, geography, etc...

Thank you for your enlightenment, and sorry if it has already been asked or if it's not the right place.

What do you want the "planet maker" to do? To create the planetary data (pressure, temperature, atmoshpere composition, distance from star etx) or do you want to create a redering of the planet surface as well?

If tou want rendering of the surface several 3D rendering software on the marker have the ability to create enviroments, including planets. Many years ago I used to spend my free time (I had a lot at that time ;) ) in creating 3D rendering images and the software I used (I don't know if I can post the name of the software here) had a function for the creation of environments.

If you are looking for the Planetary data I'd suggest to check sources from other Sci-Fi works. For example several Sci-Fi videogames have buil-in planetary databases and few of them are very accurate. They will give you an idea on what the temperature of planet that orbit on a given star class should be, what effect the star has on the planet etc.

You can change them to make them unique, but still within scientific parameters, write your own background, give the planet your own name and.. you got a Planet ;)

There used to be a script plugin for Photoshop that could be used in Gimp that would let you make planets and moons the easy way, unfortunately it doesn't seem to jump up in a simple google search.

I can't remember who first pointed out the plugin to me, but they used to post planets in their B+C blog, and with those offline at the moment I can't go find the name...

Edit: It is called LunarCell by Flaming Pear.

Why on <insert name of planet here> not?

You know someone may say ywe are doing some advertising...;)  anyway if any of you is interested it was a DAZ software, a version of the Carrara 3D software...

It is an old software and it's not free. I don't know if it already exists or if they update it or whaterver. It's a long time I don't make 3D rendering and I made them just for fun. I never considered my self a digital artist.

By the way the software had a function that allowed to create both surface environment both the planet from "space point of view". I know I was not helpful but that topic recalled such memories ;)

If you have Gimp, Photoshop or an equivalent it shouldn't be too hard to make a picture yourself. If you can't think of something yourself here's even a link to a step by step tutorial.

You could also edit photographs. Like switching color channels or shifting hues to keep it simple.

Carrara seems the kinda stuff i'm looking for. But it's too expensive for me.

Gimp is great (since i preferred the older version, 2.6) and i like using it but it takes time and experimentations to.get.what you want and I would like to have something basically like the space marine painter.

Maybe it is a different version of planetstuffplugin that i got...

It's quite expensive indeed. I bought it only because they made a large discount for the release of that version. I don't even know if the software is still available or if the company is still in the business... a long time has passed since the days I used it... a very long time ;)

I'll follow that but i only got the gimp...

It should have more or less exactly the same tools.

As of now I have a little time to spare so link me to a description or write something and I'll see if I can help you out.
