I'm building up this 3k point list at the moment. My regular opponents play mostly Legion lists too with some Chaos Space Marines as well. The Legion Praetor has the Pride of the Legion Rite of War to make my Veteran Tactical Squads troops choices.

Jarl Aslak's Wolf Guard

Legion Command Squad - 1 Additional Chosen Marine, Cataphractii Armour, 3 Chosen w/ Power Fists, Legion Standard Bearer w/ Chainfist

Land Raider Phobos Dedicated Transport - Armoured Ceramite, Extra Armour, Frag Assault Launchers, Auxiliary Drive

Rune Priest Keldan Kell

Legion Librarian - Artificer Armour, Level 2 Mastery, Bolt Pistol, Force Sword, Refractor Field

Ulfmaerr Fenrisian Hunter Pack

Legion Veteran Tactical Squad - 4 Addtional Veterans, 2 Veterans w/ Power Axes, Veteran Sergeant w/ Power Sword, all with Melta Bombs

Land Raider Phobos - Armoured Ceramite, Extra Armour, Auxiliary Drive

Rune Priest Rothgar Hem

Legion Librarian - Artificer Armour, Level 2 Mastery, Bolt Pistol, Force Axe, Refractor Field

The main question I have with the list is actually in regards to the Rune Priests. Visually I want them in Cataphractii Armour for a couple of conversions I have planned but am I losing too much from the squads they're joining for very little benefit beyond how the minis will look?

Honestly I'm all about this list, its very Wolfy and I would LOVE to play against this. You have 4 solid troop choices that will hit the field running. I have a feeling this will multch most armies. As for the Rune Priests, its your call. Personally I think they are going to be awesome as is and have some serious toughness. Perhaps have one drop Div and use a different school? Telepathy could be devastating in HH. If you are truly worried about points costs though you could make a change. Where would you put the extra points if you dropped the Catapractii armor on the Priests?

Thanks Crusader_Weber glad I've captured the theme ai wanted then! To be fair with the Rune Priests it's less about the points and more is a 4+ invulnerable save and looking cool good enough to jusify losing the ability to Sweeping Advance and space for an extra Veteran in the Land Raider if I went for Artificer Amour instead.

Will certainly try some other disciplines. I've never really done much with psykers before now so lots of experimenting to do. Divination looked the best on paper just with the Primaris power making such a big difference to the effectiveness of their units. Telepathy seems like it could be a lot of fun actually!

Well having a mix of disciplines is the best route. Divination is great for a solo psyker. I'd do artificer and add a refractor shrield or iron halo so you won't lose sweeping advance. However point wise it'd be comparable to cataphractii armored ones. Since you have two psykers though definitely consider two different disciplines.
Right, I've amended the list a little then. Taken the disciplines out whilst I toy with those. Given each of the Rune Priests a Refractor Field and Artificer Armour and added an extra Veteran to their escorts to take up the free seat they've left behind. For the price of losing a 4++ save I've gotten a 5++, an extra attack from their force weapons and 4 extra regular CCW attacks on the charge from the extra Veteran running with them. Also the squads can now mop up any enemy Legionaries that flee from their wrath! :)

I tried a Level 3 Librarian with Divination in a couple of matches and I can tell you he was quite impressive. Consider Librarians have Ld9 and sometimes it hurts, but it does not reduce his effectiveness a lot.

Have you ever considered the option to take a Forge Lord for the role of an Iron Priest?

Forge Lords are nice characters for challanges when you want someone stronger than a Command Squad marine but you don't want to use your Praetor.

Since they can take Techmarines gear you can give him a Cyber-Familiar increasing the Refractor field save to 4++ (Iron Halo equivalent) and most importatly he can take Rad-grenades!

Just a thought ;)

Yeah Forge Lord is a tempting option. I certainly want the option of an Iron Priest in some form whether that's running one as a Techmarine or as a Forge Lord I'm not sure would probably vary game to game but I imagine any Jarl with quite so many tanks would also have an Iron Priest or two with a fair amount of influence for all the repairs that would be needed! :D

The 20 man squad is the meat of the Legion list and the biggest strength.  If you stick to 10 man squads you might as well just playing 40k using 30k models.  A full squad can hold just about anything, add in an apothecary and you have a solid foundation.  Only down side is transport becomes expensive.

I like the Forge Lord idea, will add much to the feel of the army.  If you stay with the Librarian, drop the Termie armor.  Mixed armor units don't work too well, I've found that one or the other is mismatched with the target.  The TA leader is over-kill for whatever the PA unit can handle and is held back.

Sadly, my guess is we will have to wait until the 4th book to get the Wolves addendum.  I hope the next Marine codex is half a well designed as the 30k set.

20 man squad is a lovely idea but after a dozen or more games under my belt with the legion list I can safely say that one thing they lack is reliability they'll potentially run after 5 casualties in on shooting phase. If charged they have the same amount of attacks as my Veterans do when charging (assuming the tacticals have swapped their bolter or paid for chainswords) and my Veterans can be Fearless if I choose them to be and if they get unlucky and lose a combat they'll stay put. The same can not be said of the Tactical Squad. There's nothing more painful than 17 Tactical marines getting run down after no other casualties and their Sergeant dying in a challenge and that's something I've enjoyed inflicting on a Legion list :D
