Rainbow Warriors - Casting! Casting!

Hahaha you do know you are showing all the signs of a fully fledged RTB01 Addict!

Way back when, when I a young initiate, my original Steel Wings (Blue armour and black details) army, I had ninety RTB01 Marines, twenty Mark VII metal Marines and two squads of Terminators, one Librarian Terminator, one Captain Terminator, a Deredeo Dread, a Marine trike, two power armour Librarians, two power armour Chaplains, two Rhinos and two Land Raiders.

And I used to have a Space Wolf army that was slightly smaller....

All gone unfortunately, save what I've found recently that used to belong to a friend (including Leman Russ, which I could not bear to sell. Freki and Geri didn't make it :( )

So, yeah...

Come in brother Aquilanus take a seat. The test results are back from the apothecary. Your RTB01 positive, there is no cure. Good day.

My memories of the old beakies were a few squads painted* white with a blue lightning bolt** motif on the shoulder*** "Originally" named the Blue Bolts.

Glad that you are getting back to your roots! I used to love those old Librarians. In fact I might see if I can get one on E bay myself for my Raptors. Look what you have done its contagious!!!!

* More like plastered

** More like a S drawn by a 2 year old

*** Most of the arm, back pack and helmet/face

Talking of Librarians, there is one on ebay at the moment, it's the cool bare headed power armour one with the sword facing down to the floor (which I used to have  )

But I shouldn't talk of such temptation devil.gif

I saw it last night. It has given me an idea. Im going to make a 2013 version of him....

Looking forward to seeing more paint on these dudes

I've finished cleaning up a Tactical squad and a Devastator squad (two missile launchers), so I'll be getting on with painting as many of them as I can, starting with the Tactical squad as the mini pictured earlier is one of them.

In keeping with a few other topics, I think I'll have to at least come up with a squad name and possibly some fluff ^_^

Some day, I shall modify my swarms of RTB01s so they actually stand up straight, because when you do that they look awesome.

Some day...

If I had the greenstuff-fu do the patience etc to do so, I'd do that too

Since my last post, I have got about 50% of the Tactical squad done. Have highlights to finish on bodies, paint and highlight the arms and paint weapons. I would have painted more, but the bulb on my painting lamp went and I didn't have a spare <_<

I also found and bid on another 18 RTB 01 Marines on ebay  Should my bids on both auctions be successful, I will have enough for an entire company, including a Command squad

The two auctions I entered into on ebay failed (was snipped by another bidder, literally at the last second on the larger auction dry.png ), so for now, 4 squads and a possible Command squad will have to suffice laugh.png

Anyway, a little progress. Not as much as I would like, but going back to work means that I have far less time to do anything laugh.png

This made me smile as I painted my first RTB01 lot (all 30) as blue Rainbow Warriors when I was 14 (over 25 years ago when WH40k RT came out).

It was when I had painted all 30 blue, (but also painstakingly doing the rainbow striping on the helms from tip to all the way back) that a mate pointed out to me that page 156 says they are "multi-coloured" which started a debate over the fact all the other Chapters had their primary colour listed (red for Blood Angels, black for Dark Angels, blue for Ultramarines etc) but Rainbow Warriors where listed as multi-coloured and not blue and the helm stripe colours on page s 168/169 weren't mentioned for any Chapter and thus not in scope :) I pointed out that doing the rainbow stripes was probbably what it meant and doing them all in different primary ROYGBIV colours wasn't going to happen as they where already all blue and the helm stripes had been a nightmare for a first time painter with only the basic Citadel Colour box and one brush with no inks (they hadn't made them yet) so washes had to be made from water and paint and looked muddy to say the least (and Mithril Silver boltguns just looked so shiny even with Chaos Black washes).

The things that matter when your 14 eh? ;) I'll go back to swearing at my Land Raider now but I'll be watching this to get drunk on nostalgia and fondly remember painting helmet stripes and managing to paint with next to nothing apart from enthusiasm and a two page "Eavy Metal article.

Ah, 14. I really wish I could go back and give my 14 year old self a clip around the ear. And some advice, a lot of it... <_<

Anyhoo.

Your experiences are mostly similar to mine then  although where I was, there was a red A5 booklet on "How to paint Space Marines" I had managed to get hold of. My first box set of RTB 01 Marines were also blue, as my DIY Chapter the Steel Wings were that colour originally with a yellow skull and wings  but I used a pot of Humbrol (I think) blue which was kinda "Royal" or dark blue. Getting to a GW was a pain back then as the nearest one to my home town was in Birmingham, so I only ever got to go there at Christmas and on my Birthday.

If you're after a nostalgia trip, if you haven't already go and have a look at Gitsplitta's Mantis Warriors topic in the Hall of Honour forum. They are (mainly) the inspiration for this project ^_^

Hopefully, I'll be able to replace the bulb on my painting lamp so I can paint until later tomorrow. That would enable me to get my first Tactical squad done in the next day or so. After that, I'll start on the Devastator squad.

Another day another progress report. I was supposed to be at work (as I was supposed to be in yesterday), but Papa Nurgle decided to "bless" me with one of his little party favours on Saturday night <img alt="dry.png" src="http://image.bolterandchainsword.com//public/style_emoticons/default/dry.png" title="<_<" /> so I had managed to get a combat squad done. The Chapter insignia and the bases need to be finished, but I'm leaving them for now, so I can get some more practice painting them. The bases, I'm considering doing "properly" as I was never one for that kind of thing in the past.

As for the helmet colours, I'm thinking that I should use them as a denotation of rank. The one with the colours is the combat squad leader, when the squad is split in two (I haven't gotten around to doing the Sergeant yet, but all the Sergeants will be helmetless and have a "modest" head dress if I can sculpt one that doesn't look silly. If I can't I might sculpt something to go on one of their shoulder guards instead.).

(Brother) Captain Varagol, is one of two "official" Characters in the Rainbow Warriors Chapter, the other being Brother Vermilion (the Brother shown being shot at by "Sister Sin"). I don't know where the Character is mentioned but I decided to use the name anyway Eh'Tor is a creation of my own (and a main character in the fiction I'm writing ) The Force staff is rather pants I admit, but I'll get him one more in keeping with his standing within the Chapter eventually. Hopefully I'll get them both done at some point soon, but I'm currently mulling over how to paint their heard dresses (Eh'Tor's will be the hair painted in bright colours, rather than a sculpted one). I've got a few pictures of Mayan and Incan ones and I'll be having a go at trying to get that feel across, but until I feel confident enough to paint them, they'll stay further down the queue. Varagol is already partially base coated in black, but I think I'll try the chaos black spray can I bought a while ago on him. Varagol is based on the truly EPIC picture that Greyall did sometime ago. It's not exactly the same as the character, but as close as I can get to it ^_^

At the rate I'm going, it'll probably be a couple of months before I get what I have painted. The Command squad I started will be done last, along with the Company banner which will be stripped and done again.

After that, I'm thinking about vehicles. I bought a Storm Talon a while ago, which is partially constructed, but it's been appropriated for my Steel Wing army. I will be getting one for my Rainbow Warriors too, but the troops need something to carry them into battle, so I think I'll be getting Razorbacks (with options to use them as Rhino's) for them first. After that and the Storm Talon, I'm thinking Dreads.

Lots of Dreads

I've also bitten the bullet and bought the audio drama "Mission: Purge", just so I can hear with my own ears confirmation that the Rainbow Warriors are Ultra Marines successors (I believe it, but I want to know the context in which it's revealed). I may give a review of it if anyone is interested...

beautiful Rainbow warriors, good to see them ressurected!

Thank you! I finally found the motivation to get started on them. I just wish I had been able to whilst I was off for 6 weeks; I'd have had the vast majority of them done by now! laugh.png

Edit: Regarding Mission: Purge. Gav Thorpe has a sense of humour

I listened to the RW reference - Literally, a comment about the Gene line and nothing else :(

Oh well.

Whilst I'm pleased with how most of him turned out, the eyes and the Headdress are things I wish I'd practised a little first sad.png One positive note is that at least my highlighting is far more consistent happy.png

Oh well. It does mean that my army finally has a HQ happy.png I've also gotten the arms on the other half of the Tactical squad painted up to the wash stage and attached to the torsos, so just the highlights on the armour and the weapons to paint. I had considered base coating the Storm Talon I have so I can base coat it, but I want to concentrate on the rest of the Marines I have before I start to tackle vehicles.

Comments etc as ever, are most welcome happy.png

Edit:

I've also bitten the bullet and ordered the vast majority of the parts needed to do something that I've wanted to do for ages. Stay tuned! ^_^

Okay, more on the little hint from my last post:

med_gallery_51296_6652_163599.jpg

The picture above shows the majority of the parts I need to make a "Counts as" model. My aim is to have a Chaplain on a Cold One mount to be used as a bike. I still have to source the right arm and a Crozius somehow, and I forgot to get a biker base as well dry.png. I don't want to have to buy a Finecast model and hack it up for the arm, so any ideas or suggestions would be very appreciated! happy.png

I thought I'd try to use a Vampire Count for the head, but it's a little small, and I forgot that the back of the head is "missing", so I'd have to use some green stuff to fix that. Still the "look" of the head seems very suitable for my needs happy.png

The legs are somewhat too narrow. I did buy two Biker Marine legs, but when I tried to bend one to shape it split at the hip sweat.gif I think that I'll be getting the Thunder Wolf mount legs as they seem to be far more suited for the purpose. As well as the standard head for the Cold One, I also got the "Command" head (top right of the picture), which looks far better I think happy.png I'm currently working out the best way of putting two bolters on the mount. Regarding paint scheme for the Cold One, I might style it so it looks more cybernetic, which would hopefully make any bolter additions look better. At the moment, I'm undecided whether to put them on the head or try to add them mid chest (around or under the head).

Not sure when I'll actually get this started, as I still have a Dark Apostle to paint to finish my LPC Vow, but I have a week off coming up so I'll hopefully get it started then.

Thanks for looking happy.png

These are looking fantastic! Keep up the great work breathing new life into these venerable, old minis!

I've found that in order to vary the poses you have to be willing to cut the body apart at the joints and reconfigure it with a little glue, pins and some green stuff. Not all that difficult but it can get you out of the perpetual "crouching marine" syndrome.

I'll be looking forward to seeing how you progress!

I have thought about trying it on one to see how well I could do it, but I haven't yet as I've been very wary of making too big a mistake. However, I have enough for four full squads plus a few left over, so I can "sacrifice" one to see what I can come up with. I'll have another look through your topic to see if I can draw on any more inspiration ^_^

The other thing to keep in mind is that GW does make a few Mk VI legs for normal marines. You can snag them from a bits merchant on-line to give your squads some character. I snagged a bunch for my sternguard "snipers" which is how I did the kneeling poses.

I like that guy, the Blue is really nice and the feathered headdress is pretty cool.

Have you thought about sourcing some Lizardmen bits to make life easier?

I have had a look at them on various UK bitz sites and there are a few items that I'd consider trying, but whilst it would make things easier, I have decided that I should be more experimental and get to grips with green stuff. I did use Milliput in the distant past, but as many who have used both modelling putties know, they are very different animals when put to use. I have been considering getting some of that instant mold so that I can create a "master" from scratch and then use it to duplicate as many times as I need, but I'd have to learn how to use it first

In any case, I'd had a lot of fun with this army, and unusually, I haven't had any "burn out" from it yet (i.e. haven't gotten bored, disillusioned, or otherwise distracted from making progress)

Looking really good.

Thank you happy.png

I've had (yet) another thought on what I'd like to do for my army. I'd love to have a "counts as" model for every Ultra Marine character (as in the Ultra Marines, rather than Lysander et al, although I think it'll be a lot of fun to eventually do them too some time happy.png ) in the Space Marine Codex, as they are a successor Chapter. I'm currently working out how I'd go about doing a Rainbow Warrior "Marneus Calgar". I think I have the power fists sorted out (I'm not going to just get the actual Calgar arms as that would be cheating and will look silly), I just have the "look" of the model to work out. He'll most likely have a head dress similar to Brother Captain Varagol, but the execution will hopefully be far better than the last one. The MC counts as will be mainly used for bigger games (as lets face it Marneus Calgar, like him or not, is a bad ass!). Also looking to create the others, although they won't be realised for some time yet.

One final thing (for now laugh.png ). I've always been astounded by the positive feedback by many members of this site. More recently, I've been even more so by the generosity of a few. I won't go into that too much for now, but I'd like to say publicly thank you to everyone for the encouragement, the help with ideas, and the sheer amount of awesome that I've seen across the site. I really do think the Bolter and Chainsword is one of (if not) the best sites on the Internet. Full stop.

Whilst I haven't quite finished my first Tactical squad, the little plastic tub containing the Chapter's Big Guns was too tempting to ignore devil.gif Once finished, there will be two Devastator squads, each with two missile launchers happy.png

med_gallery_51296_6652_159022.jpg

The Marines are actually a lot darker shade of blue than they are in the picture dry.png No highlights etc added as yet, as I still haven't replaced the bulb on my painting light yet (hopefully if I remember, I'll get a new one Friday...)

Still haven't quite worked out how to attach twin Bolters to the Cold One counts as Chaplain on bike model yet (well, not without it looking ridiculous...) sweat.gif

Group shot:

med_gallery_51296_6652_132722.jpg

I think one of the next things I need to get around to is to make a decent light box or at least find an easy, reliable way of taking photos sweat.gif

I've also decided to paint the weapon casings of each Marine green, to represent the Fourth Company as per the Codex, which I'll get around to doing when I next get a day off happy.png

Comments and critiques welcome as usual happy.png
