Review - Pegasus Hobbies Gothic City Ruins 1

Recommended Posts

Hello all :)

My lovely fiancee has given me a set of gothic city ruins by Pegasus Hobbies for my birthday and I figured it might be an idea to show the fraterii (sp) how this kit stacks up.

In the box you get enough pieces for two large corner sections, which can be used to simulate one or two ruined buildings.

The pieces are made of a similar plastic to GW's old hard dark grey stuff and have a nice amount of detail. The kit is also a snap-fit jobby and though you get an instruction sheet it really shouldn't be necessary

I'll get some pics up in the next day or two to really show it off before I start putting it together and slapping on the paint.

Bye for now ;)

Well I'm back with some pics and here they are :)

As you can see, the parts come loose in the box. However the plastic is very hard and therefore it's not an issue with regards to them getting damaged.

And here's the kit assembled without any glue. It goes together very well and can be built in multiple configurations, I did put the floor pieces in wrong though

I'll be back with further pics of the painted product and to give my final verdict on it in the near future :)

Ok, I've got some pics of one of the corner sections with a Tactical squad.

I've also looked the product up on Wayland Games site and it is 28mm scale, but judge for yourselves ;)

All in all I'm very happy with the set and for less than £20 it's definitely a good investment :)

They also do a large Gothic building in the same style as this for under £25 on Wayland Games site so it's a cheaper way of building up a cityscape board and can be modified to represent most of the terrain options available.

I would heartily recommend these sets to anyone put off by GW's prices.

I've combined a few of the kits (with Gothic City Buildings ((large and small))) and made larger buildings:

Cheapo paints from art supply stores make it much easier to finish, rather than using small, expensive jars from GW. That, and the big brushes they have. For here, brands like Folk Art, Krylon, and Americana have more than enough colors to choose from and perfect everything to make them ideal for scenery painting.

The base Gothic Building set pieces were designed to be bulky, such that it would take a fairly hefty weapon to blast through them. I also designed them very specifically with GW scale miniatures in mind. The same goes for the Gothic Bridge, which people will note is coincidentally just wide enough for a Land Raider. msn-wink.gif I am glad that so many people have enjoyed these buildings over the years. Without a doubt they are my biggest contribution to the gaming community at large. I wish I had been able to design the Gothic Ruins and other sets too, as they would have been a bit better as to the overall design (meaning how things go together in the grand scheme of things), but it was not to be. Though there are a few mistakes, the guys who worked on the other sets got them right enough, and so they work well enough. I always enjoy seeing what people build with them.

And no, I wouldn't recommend using GW paints on them, as the astronomical amount of money for the paint required could be spent on even more terrain (because people seldom have enough terrain, and no, I don't get any royalties from anything tongue.png). As was previously suggested, get some cheap paint from a craft store instead, and go to town on them. Or, better still, if you plan to paint a whole bunch of buildings, you should go to your local hardware store and have them custom mix you up a GALLON of your favorite base gray color (and any other color) for about $20 a GALLON. Think about that- $20 for a GALLON of paint in exactly the color you want. You know how much a gallon of GW paint will run you? laugh.png If you have a favorite GW (or other brand) gray color, take it in with you and they will match that color for you. For the lighter gray or white dry-brushed highlights, use the cheap craft store paint (but you don't have to paint them just gray either). You can get primer in a variety of colors at your local hardware store too, and for around $3 a can. So, save money on paint/primer, and spend it on more terrain. More terrain = better (and better looking) games.

Very nice!

I got hold of I think 3 or 4 Gothic City Ruins and enough wall to build a straight 4m wall from ebay (paid around €140). I fell in love with the modular system, but I also noted that some parts doesn't really fit. I have yet to try the knife on them...

I plan on creating maybe 3 ruined buildings with interior walls / rooms and some kind of landingpad (40k) on one of them (count as imperial landing pad but a bit more expensive in points as it gives more ruin to hide in), but leave the rest of the parts to be built on the fly.

The tip to go to any other store than GW for paint seems invaluable, my plan was to get hold of either some spraypaint cans in gray and then wash/shade everything, but, well, we will see. Seahawks builds looks extremley nice, and makes me realize there are at least one more kit out there since I have no circular windows nor pointy-roof-wall-parts (whatever they are called in english). I will post my results when done (probably in the summer) on /r/Warhammer on reddit.

Sorry for the necromancy, but I have to ask; how much are these gothic ruins? And are they cheaper than GW scenery? Either way, WANT.

The sets range from $21.99 to $32.99, and can be quite extensive. GW's buildings are all $33, and a bit smaller overall.

I have to ask.... How did that tank get in there?

Why, clearly it's because they passed their Dangerous Terrain test. ;)

Sounds about right to me. That'd sort me out for city terrain as and when I start gaming (of which I'm gonna make a table asap, and will post a tut once that's done). Until I get these, I'm gonna make my own (again, gonna post a tut on what I'm doing once it's done.).

To be honest, these buildings look better than official GW buildings.

Edit; I hadn't initially seen the fact that Razblood had posted about the approximate price, and where to get them. I've now ordered a box. Very cheap in comparison to eBay, of which surprises me. I'll post pics of what I do with them as and when I get chance. Thank you for posting about these scenery sets. :)

A quick recap. I wouldn't recommend Wayland Games for getting hold of this set. I ordered a box 2 weeks ago, and it turned out they never had it in stock, due their supplier. Thankfully, I managed to find it in my local hobby shop (Games Emporium for those living in the Nottinghamshire area that want to get hold of this asap), and I managed to get my order cancelled and refunded.

So now my only "problem" is sorting out the base of each ruin and slightly texturing the smoother areas on the ruins. Should be fun.

Yeah, I used "canvas board" as the base. I managed to get the texturing right on both the base and ruins, as I used stone effect spray for the base that my friend gave me, and my primer spray gives off a slight textured look anyway, so that was used for the ruins in particular. Gonna finish my sternguard before I attempt to commit to painting my ruins. :)

Never even thought about using it like this, a much cheeper alternative to the actual kits (I think) excellent idea!
