another shot there is a little more work done here. the reason i did all the inscriptions is because in the codex entry for the black armor it says it is covered in inscribed prayers to the emperor, vows and such it really to bad i am such a terrible photographer i think the model looks cool until i see the pictures i took.

Looks good so far, although I agree that there are maybe too many inscriptions for my personal taste.  I can see where you're coming from, though, with the fluff and I'm totally behind fluffy paint jobs - my WHFB Dark Elf Executioners had white robes (explained in the Darkblade novels)...

a progress update i know i'm not the best painter or photographer but i think its looking good.

i'm getting closer to the finish line now, i'm not sure what i'm going to do yet with his bolt pistol and i need to do the backpack and work on the eyes, large gem on the sword and then base the model. anyone know a good Templar base?

comments anyone?

First off, I think you're pretty close on this guy. I just finished painting mine recently and he was more difficult to paint than I thought he  would be. I can't say that I'm happy with mine just yet, but he's good enough to be on the table, so that's a start.

Now, regarding your champion:

1. He looks dirty, as if he's been in battle. I like this look and try to keep my guys from looking pristine as well. I'd stay with this look.

2. This may just be the lighting in the pics, but it appears as if the scripting and the edge highlights are the same brightness. This has the effect of eliminating the depth in his armor. If it's not the lighting, you might consider giving the edged highlights a thin black wash to soften them up just a tad. If you think this dulls the armor too much, then go back and just hit the very tops of some of the edges.

3. His sword. I think you've got a good start on it, but do keep in mind that this sword is akin to a chapter relic, which I think means taking just a little extra time to get it to stand out a tad. In this case, I would cover over the handle bit with a leather color (I used Snakebite Leather), then a wash like Devlan Mud. This will seperate the hilt, the handle and the blade. Also, there are jewels on either side of the hilt, and one at the bottom that deserve a little attention. There's also a jewel in the middle of the maltese cross hanging from his neck.

4. If it were me, I'd paint his holster the same leather/Devlan Mud wash coverage to give it some separation from his armor.

So with just a little more attention, I think you can see him pop out just a tad more. Like I said, he's very close and since you only have one in an army (most of the time), he should get a little more attention than your basic initiates.

All in all, you are doing a very good job.

Cheers,

I've painted all of the gems with scab red gave them a highlight f blood red and then added a small white glint near the top of each stone i plan on giving the a final highlight with orange to make them pop a little more. I've also painted the handle on the sward with scab red the lighting in the above pictures is just bad so you cant tell. i think i will paint the holster and belt with scorched brown as i'd like them to stay pretty dark but still stand out some.

I'd like to do something to make the sword stand out a little more but I'm afraid I'll just ruin it if i try something like what I see on other black swords

here is a picture with hopefully better lighting:

and of course its out of focus . . . stupid phone . . .

P.S. If you are looking at this thread and haven't voted for Black Templars here: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/263919-chapter-for-initial-campaign/ please do so now

Well i think i'm finally pretty close to finished on this guy and ready to post him up in the hall of champions these will probably be the last pictures i take and there are a few small touch-ups to be done that i didn't really notice until looking at the pictures. but here he is, my Emperor's champion! now to start chalking up notable kills . . . .
