tiberius183
I recently acquired a used, partially unassembled Finecast model off ebay, the problem is the previous owner primed it in Satin or Gloss. So, I'm going to have to strip it and do it right. I normally use Easy Off oven cleaner for metal and plastic models, but not sure how it would affect resin. I have an empty finecast sprue soaking in it right now to see what happens. But, while I'm waiting, anyone have any luck with other stripping products for finecast? Olis
Now, I'm only going off of second hand information here, but I would have thought Simple Green would be a good bet. tiberius183
I've heard reports of Simple Green softening the resin. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/271582-stripping-finecast/#findComment-3309364 Share on other sites
Olis
Ah. I'll take that bet off of the table then. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/271582-stripping-finecast/#findComment-3309365 Share on other sites
tiberius183
yeah. People have speculated that GW purposely used this formula of resin to make it harder for paint to be stripped, forcing you to buy a new model. :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/271582-stripping-finecast/#findComment-3309366 Share on other sites
GhostLegion
yeah. People have speculated that GW purposely used this formula of resin to make it harder for paint to be stripped, forcing you to buy a new model. hmm...that sounds too complicated to be true. id more suspect this resin was chosen to be more paint absorbant and easier to shave (read clean up with a knife). tiberius183
I have noticed that the old primer does scrape off, but that would only be a last resort for me. What I may end up doing, if I don't find a safe stripping agent, is water-down some Abbadon Black and manually prime that way, hopefully that will flatten-out the sheen without loss of too much detail. Chaeron
I've been told Dettol (certainly neat) has been known to damage Finecast, so I wouldn't advise it myself! tiberius183
An update on the Easy Off test: sprue came out fine after about an hour. I then threw a small bit of the model in it, and after about an hour, came out fine. So, did the whole set. After a little more than an hour, took a tooth brush and except for some crevices, the old primer came right off with no damage to the model itself or any loss of detail. The Easy Off did soften the model a little; while I was scrubbing it down, a part did break off, but the break was clean and I was able to glue it back on after everything was clean and dry. But, overall, satisfied. I HEREBY DECREE EASY OFF OVEN CLEANER (the NON heavy duty strength) SUITABLE TO STRIP FINECAST MODELS! Just wouldn't advise soaking for more than an hour. elmo
Don't use methylated spirits or Surgical spirit as these turn the resin into chewing gum!!! Have to buy a new Chaplain with jumppack. GlauG
By the same token, I have used Acetone-free nail polish remover to strip finecast stuff, but with the same caveat that you don't want to soak it long... I left the models in for about 15 minutes and did the work with a toothbrush. Sanguine Eternal
Simple Green DOES work. I stripped my terminator libby after I let my gf paint it. I decided the poor paint job was the reason he was failing all of his psychic tests... She got over it...Anyways, I left it in a ziploc bag for a couple days outside, then used an old nail scrubbing brush under warm water. Worked like a charm. Finecast will bend anyways with hot water, I've had to use it to bend a bunch of the swords on the vanguard assault marines back to normal. They were horrible...
