Help with Sons of Horus green (especially for vehicles)

Recommended Posts

Greetings fellow hobbyists,

I need your help.

I decided to start to paint some of my Son of Horus models and I'm encountering difficulties in recreating their green.

For the infantry models I used the method suggested in Oct WD (the tutorial had the wrong wash but I corrected according to what I read here on B&C)

I painted a layer of Mechanicus Grey, draybrushed Necron Compound and Coelia wash. I tested it on a CSM mini and it looked nice. Perhaps a little darker than it appears on the pages of Betrayal but it still have that "metallic look" SM armours show in FW books.

The issue took place when I tried to use the same technique on the plain surfaces of a vehicle (I knew it wouldn't have worked in the same way)

The color lack "visual cohesion", namely some areas are barely green while others (where wash accumulated) are far more darker. If I try to apply other washes I just increase the number of different shade spots.

I'm quite familiar with such events but when you use washes to darken an already existing color the different shades on the vehicle surfaces are quite useful but in such case the wash is ment to determine the actual color so I end with "maculated" vehicle.

It looks like a green Dalmatian dog, if you know what I mean ;)

Do you have any suggestion in how to recreate SoH green without using the extensive mixture procedure found on FW site?

Thank you for your help.

I think you could ask to sheep about it. His SoH vehicles appear to be same shade as his infantry. http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/254518-sons-of-horus-once-more-into-the-breach/page-4 Or anyone with more extensive knowledge, of how to paint marine vehicles the same color as the infantry.

Thanks for the link. I'll try to find there the info I need.

I suspect a mixture of colors could be the only choice. After all SoH green is a peculiar shade of that color....

Over a larger area such as a vehicle side or something, I think that the technique would be more akin to glazing than washing. The main difference being that glazing is a tint over he whole area and washing is usually just to darken recesses etc. The main difference in applying these techniques I would say, is the amount of liquid on your brush, if when you make a brush stroke on an area and you are left with a greater amount of liquid than the start of the stroke you have too much on your brush for glazing. For glazing it should be a very thin, fairly uniform amount of colour left at the start and the end of a brush stroke. Also, if you hit it just right, the pigment left at the start of the brush stroke should just be starting to dry as you finish your stroke.

That's a very good suggestion. Thanks thumbsup.gif . I used that technique in the past (on infantry models, though) with blue wash over metallic color.

However I suspect a thin layer of coelia will create a light green effect quite different than SoH ones but undoubtly better than the "wash".

I'm always happy to help, though i'm not sure if that link has the info you're looking for.

It's a good starting point, though ;)

The problem is many of SoH greens I found here on B&C use non GW colors and it's quite difficult to find them in my region. That's one of the reasons I always use GW colors. I have no difficulty in finding them ;)

I guess i'm lucky that i live in the Espoo county next to Helsinki, Finlands capital. And what paints i don't find from the stores, i buy from the internet.

I prefer to not buy paints from the Internet due to shipping charges ;). I would have access to all the paints available worldwide via internet but a single paint does not justify shipping charges. I also tend to not use non trackable shipping methods because every time I did I got very long delays in delivery.
