Tactica: Dark Angel Allies

So there is already a thread talking about how to fight against DAs as Grey Knights, but I haven't seen one that addresses how to incorporate them as allies. Fluff-wise, the Dark Angels and the Inquisition do not mesh well (obviously ;) ) but on the other hand, GKs exist to fight Chaos Daemons and DAs are the sworn enemies (even more than other SMs) of Chaos Space Marines... since Daemons and CSM so often fight hand-in-hand, it would be logical for Grey Knights and Dark Angels to join up against their common enemies from time to time.

Since GKs only get them as "Allies of Convenience" (just like everyone else, since GKs have no Battle Brothers), there are certain limits on how GKs can benefit from DA assistance.

That said, I believe there are many ways in which GKs can potential benefit from a DA allied detachment supporting them. I am very interested to see what experiences other GK players out there have had.

That said, let me start with one of the tactics I think is a very effective combo using GKs with a DA supporting cast:

-Start with a core force of 2 GKSS as troops, a Squad of Purifiers in a Stormraven, supported by 2 Dreadknights and a Grandmaster (GM buffs the Purifiers in close combat with grenades and HH and can make DKs scoring, as required)

-Add a DA allied detachment of a Biker Librarian with Divination, Command Squad with Banner of Devastation, 2 Tac Squads with bolters, and a Black Knight squad.

-Command Squad and Tac Squads form a fire base and hold your own DZ while putting out lots of Dakka. Strike Squads advance toward middle field to pressure your opponent take control of the open area. Libby and Black Knights dash up one of the flanks, pressuring the enemy in conjunction with the Dreadknights, who shunt up that same flank and put enemy in a dilemma... do they engage the DKs and ignore the Black Knights (who can light them up next turn with TLed Plasma and rad/stasis grenades), or do they focus on the BKs (with their 3+ jink save) and leave the Dreadknights free to rampage through their lines the next few turns. Meanwhile, the Stormraven comes in to deal with enemy fliers and, when appropriate, get the GM + Purifiers into assault on select enemy units.

So, how have others been able to use DA allies?

1: Belial and 10 x DWT to replace Mordrak and Ghost Knights.

2: LRC, Command Squad, Techmarine, Banner of Devestation & Power Field Generator.

AV14 Tank that shoots 24 TL Bolter shots per turn, with a 4++ Save, and the ability to repair damaged weapons or restore lost Hull Points.

DA really don't have much to offer us. Remember, Belial only makes DW scoring if the primary detachment is DA. Also, DA good stuff (ie the non-standard Marine stuff) is as expensive or more expensive than Knights.

I'd rather take Templar Terminators and make them scoring via 'Grand Strategy', or just take standard Marines and use their enhanced armoury of options.

We are already an army starved of points and low on model count. DA don't help at all with either of those things, and a lot of what they do is already replicated by our own stuff better.

I'll back that up.

Our GK dex is pretty solid as it is without DA allies, heck even SM allies.

What we need is bodies and long range fire support. But hey we got that too ;) Henchmen.

Haha yeah. Ecto-Fiends and Obliterators will still make your Terminators sadface (AP2 blasts hurt). Straight Knightwing is better though, we miss out on storm shields but DA pay through the nose for them anyway. Free mixing halberds+hammers is superior to lightning claw/thunderhammer they get. Plus, unlike them, we keep our ranged weapons regardless of melee weapon choice.

I'm still unsure of how to counter Helldrakes. Icarus lascannon+Vindicare seems to be the generic go to, although a Raven could be good also (between the multi-melta and lascannon should be able to kill one per turn).

Well, Hammer + SB (which is how I'd run my GKT now) isn't really that different to the normal PF + SB loadout of usual Terminators.

I'm looking to mix and match weapon ranges.

DWT for CML/PC and TL HF.  GKT For Psycannons.

Use DW for long range and close up Deep Strike.  Use GKT to hold the Midfield.

Not bad. You bringing a Grandmaster for the Knight component?

If I want to go full TDA, that means DA Primary, so the DWT score. No need for a GM, I'd go for a OMI in TDA with a Psycannon and Divination.

Pew Pew! msn-wink.gif

Killing Fliers still concerns me though. PC are cheaper than CML on the DWT, but can't hurt them.

Basic Idea would be something like;

HQ: Belial (190)

Troop: DWT x10, HF x2 (460)

Troop: DWT x5, PC (235)

Troop: DWT x5, PC (235)

HQ: OMI, TDA & NDH, Psycannon, PML1 (110)

Troop: GKT x10, Psycannon x2 (450)

Troop: GKT x10, Psycannon x2 (450)

Hmm, too expensive at 2,130.
