Dark Angels 5th Company WIP - Updated 10/04/2013

Hello again!

As well as painting up my Crimson Slaughter from the Dark Vengeance kit, I've been painting the Dark Angels which are going to be my 'main' army. I've decided to try to collect the entire 5th Company, although this WIP will probably contain a bit of 1st and 2nd Companies as well.

So far I have the Dark Vengeance stuff plus an extra Tactical Squad I picked up from eBay. Here's a few WIP shots of what I am painting at the moment:

1st Tactical: Raphael

2nd Tactical: Vasari

Vasari dual wield conversion. The wrist has since been magnetized so I can give him back the Chainsword if needed and I got some new backpack iconography to replace his current one.

Some of the Ravenwing - Sorry about the pic quality. The highlights don't show up well without a lightbox to photograph in.

5th Company Markings - First attempt at freehand.

First attempt at bases.

Thanks for reading. I am a bit consumed with my Crimson Slaughter guys at the moment as I have just over a month to get the Helbrute painted for a competition but I will try to post a few updates in here as well.

Are they your first models? Gorgeous stuff, I especially like clean and sharp highlights. Bases are also look very nice, brown-grey is a win for almost every painting scheme smile.png

Keep them coming!

Cheers

Thanks BoogeyMan! I don't get to play much and so it's always good to get a bit of feedback from here. smile.png

I painted a small force of 'Nids and LoTR stuff about 10 years ago which I don't have any more. The Dark Angels are my first serious attempt with bases and highlights etc and my first serious attempt at collecting a full army. The bases on these guys are going to be getting a bit more flock to make them a bit greener but otherwise I consider them finished. Edit: Oh and they need the Company Markings and squad numbering done as well but I was planning to do all of them at once.

I also primed my second Tac Squad the other day so they should see some love soon but my FLGS just changed the date of their painting comp and now I only have a month to get my Helbrute done, so that's where a lot of my attention will be focused for the next few weeks.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey all,

Sorry no updates in a while. It's been much too hot to paint here lately and so I haven't got much done at all. Yesterday was the first day under 35C for two weeks and so I got stuck into doing some detail work and basing on my tactical squads, pics to come soon.

I also finally received my light tent today. Here's my first photo; much better but now you can see all my mistakes!

Hopefully more photos to come in the next few days as I get stuck back into painting now that the heat has gone away!

Long time no update!

I have been flat out at work for the last month and haven't been able to get any modelling done but today I decided to make some time. I picked up my first Assault Squad a few weeks ago, so day has been spent cleaning them up and magnetizing the arms. I also did a bit of work on the bases of Tactical Squad Raphael. I have been really slack with those guys, they should have been finished ages ago. I only have a couple more bases and then they're done, thank god. The company markings can wait until I have finished all my current Marines, so that I can do them all at once.

I am going to try to finish magnetizing tonight/tomorrow and then these guys will be ready to paint.

Taken way too long but I have finally finished Tactical Squad Raphael. First ever fully painted AND based squad. Really happy with how these guys came out.

Unfortunately I ran out of magnets last night before I could finish my Assault Squad, so I've ordered 100 more. In the meantime I am going to get started on Tactical Squad Vasari.

I think the new bone is much better.

How are you doing it?

It's neat, I am also doing a 5th Company DA army, as well as a Crimson Slaughter Warband. I'll be following both your threads!

Thanks all!

In response to the question; the new way of doing it is a bit more complicated but I don't plan on rushing any of my models so I have the time to spare.

1: Base in Zandri Dust

2: Wash with Sepia, reasonably heavy with a loaded brush, and allow to dry upside down. This lets the wash run into the crevices and gets a better outline, at least in theory.

3: Highlight with Ushabti Bone.

4: Highlight again with Screaming Skull. Only on the raised edges and the very tips of the 'feathers'.

5: Final light wash with Sepia. For this wash I only load the tip of the brush and try to cover the flat surfaces instead of letting it build up in the crevices and I leave it to dry upright, so it runs down towards the models feet.

Thanks for the compliment on the bases. I personally don't really like them, lol. I think they turned out a bit scruffy. I want to try something different with this next squad but I haven't figured out what yet. It will still be sand/rocks/grass for a sort of scrubland look, but I might try different grass or larger rocks.

Unfortunately the Crimson Slaughter thread is probably a dead one now. I missed the deadline for the competition I was entering and so that might get shelved in favour of the Dark Angels now. :( I may occasionally post something in this thread instead if I get around to working on them.
