Night Lords Legion E Tenebrae Lux III challenge now

Hey guys, after reading the first horus heresy book from Forgeworld a few months ago, I decided to start a Legion project. Like everyone who wanted/started one, the hardest part was to actually which legion it would be. After lot of readings from novels and internet, I decided to give myself a challenge for the painting part and follow a cool legion : the Night Lords Legion.

Then I ordered my first model from Forgeworld. I decided to take a Castus Assault Ram because nothing scream more Space Marines for me than this model. I'm still painting and currently it's a WIP stage, but I will share the different steps of that project so newbies (like me) can learn from my trials and mistakes.

So here some of my WIP

So that's where I am for tonight, more will come, so feel free to comment and give me any advices that would help me improve!

That's really nice of you guys, that's cheer me up a lot.

About the skills, I can't say I got any. It is actually my first model with my airbrush, I bought it at Christmas. I just been playing around with it on an old Rhino to learn how to use it. And if you look closely, you can see that I actually made a small mistake on one of the top part, where I didn't move correctly with the airbrush so there is more paint on it.

Thanks guys for the cheerings. I'm actually surprised being a almost a new comer to painting. That really make me feel like painting but it won't be for tonight thanks to the Champion's league.

Anyway I got a question for you guys, I'm going to make an order at FW and I plan to buy a Cerberus even if I know it's not the best tank rulewise but I still love it. I want to be able to magnetize the sponsons to swap the heavy bolter and lascannon. Same thing with some predators, but I never been magnetizing anything and I have no idea what size of magnets I should be looking for and where to find them (online would be best)?

So here you go guys, it's your chance to help a newbie in the Hobby!

Now that is some superb painting! Very impressed.

I love the look of the Cerberus as well. But it's rules are pretty terrible! I think I'd rather take 3 rappers or a typhon instead but it is a sweet looking tank!

As for magnets. It can be a bit hit and miss as you want to fit in the largest possible size for maximum strength. I cant see it that well on the forgeworld website but it looks like you have a fairly large mounting point for the guns.

The magnets you need are called neodymium magnets. You want the circular disc ones and will need to measure the mounting points to find the right size. You can get them in smaller amounts from ebay or I have used these guys in the past,

I have magnetised a fair few things in the past and there are some good guides on the Internet. You need to drill a hole so the magnet sits in nice and snug. I put them in with a little green stuff and superglue so they get stuck in solid. But make sure you get them round the right way as they can be a real pain to get out. Apart from that there isn't much to it.

Hope that helps. Can't wait to see where this army goes.

Keep it up!

Cheers.

Thanks mate, I will check it out, after some research I think I found what I need.

Sorry can't help you with your problem.

But man, that thing looks awesome so far ! Keep it up !

Thank you. I will kick my ass and finish that monster this week end, except maybe for some accessories.

Hey guys, how are u doing? I bring you a really small update, I just been painting for few minutes to give me an idea of how things would turn out with the gold. Here's the pictures :

So as you can see, I tried something different on both side. One got all the "ribs" painted in gold, while the other got one less, it's more centered.

Honestly, I prefer the the result with one less rib, which gonna make things hard to fix on the other side.

But that's why our community is here, and the forum is helpful, so which solution do you guys prefer?

Still awesome. You among several other painters pushed me over the edge. My airbrush arrives tomorrow. devil.gif

Have you noticed that your Night Lord ship has Imperial aquillas on both sides and the front? sweat.gif

Yep I know, it's because my Night Lords are a bit more in the pre Istvan V era. Actually they are on their way, so they keep everything on them so the other Legions won't notice the inner changes of the legion>

So here a small update. I'm playing a bit with the gold but it still doesn't satisfy me yet. I would prefer something darker because it contrast a bit tpp much with the rest of the model.

I started to paint the finish up pieces, try to find which one  ;)

Heresy army tend to be quite an investment, so I decided to reduce my budget by making my own bases (I usually buy some resin ones). I took the opportunity to use my flying base as a test model.

At the beginning, I had a really lighter ton for this base with more of a tank camo feel to it. It was pretty nice looking but it was a bit too bland for my taste. I then tried some pigments for the first time (the more you will follow this blog the more you'll see that I'm actually quite a beginner to the Hobby), but my first attempt wasn't as good as I expected. This was due to the color of my pigments which were closer to a red than an orange/brown taint. I then used the other type of pigment I had, and this time it gave me a better feeling about it with a mud type of pigment. So I was here with my base looking quite good but I was still not satisfied, I wanted something with more contrast with my NL, something that would pop a bit more. So I told myself "Screw this, I got nothing to loose" and I tried to add a really thin veil of orange with my airbrush and voilà. I then just used some tuft for the first time, and I'm quite pleaser because it's stand out from the base and cut a bit the monotony of it.

And here a small surprise, today on my way back from work, I see a big mail which was waiting on my front door! So I rush inside and open the big boy and here they are, my two babies (Fellblade and Cerberus) waiting for their daddy.

You can see the size of the two beast comparing to my hand (don't mind the hairs). I was really surprised by how fast I received this from FW, I ordered it just last week! (taking in account that I live in France)

I then start to check that I got everything in my package while being so excited by the though of building and painting my Cerberus and I just realize that one of the track is missing and two more are damaged (Fellblade being alright). I will call FW tommorow so they can send me some replacement pieces. Knowing them, it won't be a problem but with that now, I will have to start with the Fellblade. Life is so unfair ;)

What did you use for a blue to go over your black/white base coat?  It looks fantastic!

Not being really sure of me, I avoid mixing paint for now, so what I used is just some VMA Insignia Blue and then some highlights with french blue.
