I tend to run 10 strong packs so that the weight of numbers is on my side.  I don't really have a standard build, I always include a Wolf Bitten and a Standard just for giggles.  Other than that I try to mix and match depending on what I want the pack to do.

I do not like running the smaller packs becuase while you present more targets they are more fragile, and I don't like playing the attrition game.

I agree with some of the others about the Standard. ANY front line GH pack should have one. THe last Tournie I played in saw in game my front GH pack w/TDAWG survive being shot at by 2 16+ squads of Guardians simply because I got to reroll the failed Armour saves on the TDA. After the dust settled I had lost TDA WG & 3 GH of 10. One squad of Guardians had reeroll failed to hits. In game 2 vs Guard, the GH pack survived 2 squads firing at them, multi charged them(not the brightest thing in hindsight but 4 GH on one squad & 2(one with MOTW) on the other . THe MOTW rerolled his one turning it to a 5 & then went on to reroll 3 failed to wounds turning 2 into wounds. Managed to win combat & break both squads, sweeping them. THen rerolled a consolidation to get the pack to together into cover behind a hill. Long & short of it is IMO in 6th, taking those extras is kinda of neccessary. I almost always take a PW & MOTW with the Std. But I alos play against a variety of opponents here so build generalist  lists almost always. Just my 2 cents.

Wait, how are you rerolling armor saves against shooting? Are you talking about overwatch from those guardians or something?

You only get to reroll 1s in your assault phase.

Yes. Little tired when I posted that & was not very clear. Sorry everyone. Rerolling the ones  on my armour saves from overwatch shooting when I charged the Guardian squads(multi charged-again, not very bright but it got me stuck in) tying up 2 blob squads & their platforms. I would not have made it if I did not have the Standard that let my silly butt survive multi charging with rerolls on armour saves , MOTW to help even the odds( I always get a few ones with this), the Std again to reroll some failed to hits & wounds. Bla bla blah. I guess what I'm trying to say is that we have the upgrades to take our GH from decent ( IE--Space Marine Tactical Squad) to arguably the best Troop choice in the game. I think our biggest problem(OK--MINE anyways--LOL!!) is biting off more then we really should & expecting our little feral plastic dudes to do the job no matter what. My 2 cens anyways & hope I didn't confuse anyone again.

I always take 8 Grey Hunters with  MotW, a standard, and one special weapon (plasma or melta) as my base.

Depending how i feel ill then add in WG TDA with combi weapons to match, or bulk out the hunters to 10 to get the two special weapons.

For me, GH squads arent about doing massed damage in combat. They get out a transport, rapid fire, then take a charge, and take it well. Most of the time they end up with 3 attacks each in CC which is enough to see off most things i come up against. Use the banner as early as possible to make use of numbers, and it can utterly swing a round of combat i nyour favour.

As folk have said above, theyre not the best CC marine squad out there. They may not be the best shooty marine sqaud out there (depends what you kit em out with). But for an all round objective holder, theyre hard to beat.

The other point ill make is to always pair up GH squads. Keep them within 12" of each other so if one does end up in a difficult combat, you can hopefully run the other squad in to support.
