Sorry - but my vote is still for red - but a dark grim red and not "Santa's coming to town" red.

Don't you diss Santa, my lad, or there'll be no presents for you in 9 months time! msn-wink.gif

Bah! Humbug ;)

I am just getting back into 40k after years of absence  when I first started my Dark Angels I really didnt like the Red/Green combo so I went with Blue.

I dont have any good pictures, but here are a couple of current WIP

http://desktoppub.about.com/od/glossary/g/contrastingcolors.htm

"Red and green are contrasting colors. The more transitional colors separating two colors, the greater the contrast. For example, magenta and orange is not as high contrast a pair as magenta and yellow.

Colors that are directly opposite from one another are said to clash -- although this clashing or high contrast is not necessarily a bad thing. Some of these high contrast, complementary, clashing colors are quite pleasing."

My 2p (now that you have decided)

Red on Ravenwing

Black on tacticals

Green on termies.

Ladies and gentlemen we have a winner biggrin.png

Now make those blacks grey and win more biggrin.png

I have been doing the whole bolter in boltgun metal, for lots of contrast against the blue/gold/black of my armor. the casings on my Terminator stormbolters...I'm taking a bit of advice and doing them in black to stand out against the gold and boltgun.

Been toying with Bolter casing color and with the green glow light effect on the front of the bolter I would have to say red is probably a better choice....Still undecided atm, Pictures are not the greatest but you can see the effect.

I've always made my bolters casings red (black on RW and vets and Green for DW)

But I'm the one who start re-equiping his marines with back banners now they are in plastic... (kinda of v2-v3 nostalgia huh? :D )

But I'm going further! I also paint the vehicles weapons casing in red!

Nice posts guys, love the tactical squad and belial, both look great in red and green lol. Though i was worried about my ravenwing having black weapons your landspeeder looks great march. Im gonna repaint those too as i like the fact that the weapon doesn't stand out but is rather an extension of the vehicle itself.

Great work here :)

Look again...the CML boxes and parts of the MM are green...I'm actually repainting my tornadoes to match...black on black, with a splash of black...well, it's too much black.  The green breaks up all that black and draws the eye to the weapons, but without making the model less dark or ravenwing-y.

The MM from that angle looks pitch black due to natural shading, the boxes do look green whoever. Its a nice blending  match but IMHO it doesnt get to your eye the first time you look at it. By all means dont change it over a remark but you might want to consider(that since this is work in progress) to add a tiny portion of goblin (or the one) green in the mix to lighten it up a little. I am starting to think my marines are pitch dark too nowdays.

Turbosnake95 can I ask why the OSL/ Glow effects on the guns?

I prefer the red. Black is more realistic, but its 40K!

But definitely dark red

So awesome, I have the same squad of beakies that I painted 20 years ago... They even look the the same other than the transfers.

Exellent

Thanks,

I was very chuffed when I found these, although had to strip them down as my painting skills back then were not to my current standards lol

Turbosnake95 can I ask why the OSL/ Glow effects on the guns?

Something similar on a AR15 and thought it would be cool to do for the Bolters, just more extreme since this is the 40k universe....  I have even considered doing the bolter casing in Tan...

I doubt they would use laser designators as something far more advanced is already built into their helmets. The naked eye wouldn't see them either as it defeats the whole purpose.

Though thats nit picking realism in a universe that doesn't exist (atleast that we know of lol)

And yet with all the future technology that the 40K universe has to offer we have the "Night Fighting" rules. laugh.png

Then the Tau have the Marker Light:

The Marker Light is one of the most advanced technologies of the Tau Empire, and adds to the Tau military's already great flexibility in battle. During the Damocles Gulf Crusade, the Marker Light was also dubbed the "Valkyrie's Mark", due to those marked with it were soon numbered amongst the dead. A Marker Light is essentially an advanced laser range finder that is used to "paint" targets for other Tau units to fire upon. When activated, a Marker Light projects a beam of light at the target which measures the exact distance between the Marker Light and the user. This and other targetting information then becomes available on the wider Tau electronic battle network and is transmitted to other Tau units to guide their fire. Marker Lights allow Tau Fire Warriors and vehicles to:

  • Fire more accurately upon targets
  • Be able to see and target enemies in darkness clearly
  • Call in Seeker Missiles on the target, either from Sky Rays or missiles mounted on other Tau vehicles
  • Pin enemy units under fire from Tau troops more easily
  • Allow shots to strike more accurately at targets who take cover

All in all it's just art and we all have different ideas of what looks good and what doesn't. Just as some like black bolter casing's and some enjoy red casings. cool.png

When I started my Dark Angel army a few years ago, I resolved to make them as fluff-accurate as possible. I ran into the issue that there's no fluff reason for the variation between black and red bolter casings.

So I made one up!

In my army, the only Greenwing forces to have Red casings are the 3rd Company and their attached vehicles. (As of our latest codex, Razorbacks are now assigned to Companies.) Any weapons from the 4th through 10th company or weapon casings on vehicles from the Armoy, are painted black.

The reason for this being that the 3rd Company chapter badge is the only Battle Company that includes red in it. (The 9th Company badge has red, but it's a reserve company).

The only other company to have red weapon casings is the Ravenwing. I paint the Deathwing with green casings.

Having both color schemes on the field (if, say, fielding Scouts from the 10th, or a non-DW Land Raider with black weapon casings) I can say that I definately prefer the red. But I'll stick with my scheme of made-up fluff-segregation.

I have had both in my army and went back and forth. But to me Black looks unfinished now and Red says the blood of the Emperor's enemies will be spilled.

Silver is not a bad idea, we had it I believe on our first solo codex cover. 3rd edition?
