DA Vs SW BatREP

Hi guys,

Ok I'll not beat around the bush too much here. Just to give you a little background on myself. I've always been a Dark Angels fan. The fluff, the models.. it all appealed to my near-emo nature :p . I started in 3rd edition and have started and stopped playing over the years, but always kept modeling and reading warhammer fluff. It had been a couple of years since I played and this was my first 6th edition game.

I'm still new to the rules so be gentle on me.

At my local store I met a great guy who told me that he would give me a shot to beat him. He had just played a game and we agreed to play a small 1k battle.

I had watched his last game and could see that he was a Space Wolves player. I relished the idea of defeating the wolves!

I made pics to help. I always love seeing what happened instead of just reading about it. I made this in MSPaint, there are probably better options, but it was easy.

This was his army... please excuse the absents of fluffy names for them. I just imagined them as some traitorous offshoot of Russ's geneseed. I would have called them Evilguy squad 1, 2 and 3 but it didn't sound right.

It was the same army he had just played. I had used my Deathwing army in several battles in 5th edition, but this was the first time I'd played someone with a army that was almost completely held in reserve. (I don't play enough I know)

I build my army based on the models I had recently painted. I know it's not the best (competitive army) but it was a fun list to make, even if it has glaring flaws.

the Board looked like this...

The mission was "the Emperor's Will" I believe it was called (Holding objectives with secondary objectives). We also rolled for night fight the first round. I rolled to go first and he failed to seize the initiative.

The red Dots were, of course the objectives.

Deployment

**********

Epoch looked across the green fields of Orrius IIV. The planet was barren except for the virus-like moss that seemed to grow of every bit of rock that covered the dull little planet. Great sculptures of weed covered rock jutted up in a ballet of counter physics, held there by complex plate tectonics and low gravity the made an eerie stage, that was finished off by a dark sky. He hated it instantly.

Looking down he could see one of the objects they had come for. It was large and bulky. Green virus-grass covered it. Clearing off a small section of the noxious weed he could clearly see the Imperial symbol hidden beneath. It was a STC Capsule. This would have brought a smile to most men, but he was not a man. Encased in the dark blue armor of his station he was beyond what encompassed the definition of a man. He was a Librarian of the Dark Angels Space Marines.

Behind him Squad Absolution exited their Rhino to help secure the objective. Epoch gave a curt nod to it's Sergeant, Caim, who started barking orders to his men.

To Epoch's left Squad Vengeance searched for the second objective. Veteran Sergeant Krytas had combat squaded his unit and was driving forward to scout.

Techmarine Asaphall, surrounded by four of his Servitors scanned unending for the object. Flanked on either side by the Venerable Dreadnought Nathanial and the newly entombed Mikal, he was an imposing figure.

Turn 1

Holding the first objective I figured I'd split my forces. I didn't know any of my opponents capabilities and figured that either way I might hold one point after he dropped.

The first round was night fighting so I couldn't see anything to shoot.

SW Turn 1

On his turn he dropped right in my face. Deploying two units next to me that for all their shooting only managed a few kills on my 1st squad.

DA Turn 2

On my next turn I continued to race forward with my combat squad SGT.

The two drop pots and the terrain total hid his strike force from my Dreads and 2nd combat squads heavy weapons, so I decided to move my dreads forward to hopefully give cover to my forward unit.

I hoped for first blood, but failed to kill a pod. my 1st squad did great damage against the squad with his HQ killing 4.

My Las-cannon dread hit, but only glanced a speeder (I rolled a 1.. ugh)

I thought about charging the wolves, but chose to rapid fire instead. Not sure if that was a mistake.

SW Turn 2

On his 2nd turn his Speeders shot my forward rhino blowing it up.

He dropped his third squad behind my Dreads and with massed fire killed the Techmarine and all his servitors. Losing me first Blood!

He shot at, then charged my 1st squad. His shooting was decent and he managed to kill my Sgt with it. :(

In combat my librarian was insta-killed by his thunderhammer. I made three saves but failed the third.

The Angels held anyway.

turn 3 for the Angels.

without the Power Generator field of the Tech Marine there was no point in keeping the dreads together.

My Lascannon Dread Moved forward blew up a speeder.

My Assault Cannon Dread shot at, then charged the Wolves that just murdered the techmarine. Combat was brutal, with 3 wolves turning to paste. Despite that they held.

Combat with Squad 1 and the Wolf Lord went as expected. I managed several kills, but the Lord took is toil. Luckily it ended in a tie.

Wolves Turn 3

His last speeder moved back and hid from the Las-cannon Dread, while also killing several marines in Sqd 2's combat element.

Dreadnought Nathanial squished several more Wolves, who refused to run.

The Angels in Squad 1 continued to hold back the Wolf Lord.

DA turn 4

The remaining elements of Squad 2's forward elements shot at and missed the last speeder.

The Wolf Lord Finally killed the remaining marines in Squad one, but at a heavy price. Only he and one of his fellow troops remained. Those Angels did not go down without a fight.

Brother-dreadnought Nathanial continued his kill streak.

SW Turn 4

The vile Wolf Speeder killed the last two marines on the second objective.

The Wolf Lord finally killed the last hold outs in Squad 1. (They died to the man, refusing to run). He consolidated toward the remaining rhino.

Brother Nathanial won combat causing the cowardly Wolves to run. Try as they may to escape he managed to rake them all down.

DA Turn 5

With no hope of advancing to the second objective I needed a hail-mary pass to the first objective.

Moving forward. Both Dreads pounded the Wolf Lord and his last marine, killing the marine.

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/BatRep/BatRepSW5_zps7c255916.jpg

SW Turn 5

Seeing my plan the Wolf Speeder charged forward and failed to damage Brother-Dreadnought Mikal.

His last Troop unit shot at and failed to kill any of my last scoring unit!. One of his plasma guns exploded taking it's owner to whatever hell he came from.

The Wolf Lord charges and killed my rhino.

DA Turn 6!

Brother Nathanial shot and killed the hideous Wolf Lord.

Brother Mikal charged the last unit of Wolves. Killing several.

Squad 2 charged... and failed to make it.

DRAT!

http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z389/typher/BatRep/BatRepSW6_zps24d3264c.jpg

SW Turn 6

the Speeder shot at and failed to kill any of the Marines in Squad 2.

Combat between Brother Mikal and the Wolves ended in the Wolves breaking! they tried to run, but got slaughtered by the entombed Angel.

We rolled for Turn 7, which would have seen the Angels win the day with the Objective clearly in Squad 2's hands...

but it ended.

Final Score

Wolves 2 (1 for killing my HQ and one for First blood)

to

The Angels 1 (Killing the HQ)

All and all it was a very fun game. My opponent was great and showed really good sportsmanship.

Anyway thanks for reading guys.

P.S.

I wrote this kinda fast please excuse any typos.

Edit.. hope I got my pics working now.

Sounds like you had a fun game. Your mistake (due to not having fought Drop pod armies before) was to split up so early in pursuit of objectives.. but I'm sure you learned the lesson. smile.png Thanks for the pics, they're really help visualizing what happened! thumbsup.gif

Congratz on the enjoyable the game.  Sounds like you picked up some valuable knowledge so your future games will be resounding successes.

One possibly silly question, You listed your opponent as having three 10-man packs in Drop Pods and a Lord.  How did the Lord get into the battle?  Space Wolf Drop Pods only hold ten Infantry or a Dreadnought.

It may be old-fashioned but I do think that turn-by-turn maps like this are the best way to illustrate a battle report. I wish White Dwarf still printed battle reports like yours Typher.

Oh good point. When I first read this i thought that maybe there were only 8 troops in that unit, but then i remembered that he said his troops can use a special weapon for every 5 marines in the unit. He had two plasma in that unit, which means he had to have had 10 troops. ...or maybe he just held onto the side of the pod!

It was a fun game. My list wasn't great and I learned a lot. If he wedged an extra guy in a pod i don't fault him. In fact it was a close game, that turn six charge would have been epic if i would have made it.
