Show your Desk/Workbench Setup

Recommended Posts

I've recently replaced my wobbly 20-year old chipboard desk with a brand new setup. The main features I needed out of a new desk were:

1) All paints/tools/chemicals needed to be stored in drawers/containers that are lockable, in order to keep them away from small children. (we've got a baby on the way - due in June!)
2) It had to be tidy and all cables as hidden as possible. (see baby situation above)
3) There needed to be enough space for me to build models and use my PC.

I had a budget of around £250, and this is what I came up with:

I'm very happy with it - the desk itself was £150, and the under desk drawer unit was £40. The locking toolbox was another £40. All purchased from eBay. The desk measures 1400mm x 800mm, which is more than enough space for the toolbox, cutting mat and Keyboard/Mouse and Monitor Stand.

One of the things I was most happy with was the A2 cutting mat. They are normally £20 from Hobbycraft, I managed to get this one on eBay for about £5.

Here are some more pictures. I was even able to re-use some of the packing materials from the desk packaging to customise the inside of the drawers to stop my paints from rattling around!

So, what do your paint areas/desks/workstations look like?

Also, does anyone have any advice on desk lighting? As you can see from the first picture, my current desk light gives off a very yellow light which is far from ideal when painting. Also, because it is a flourescent tube light, it flickers and makes my eyes hurt after an hour or so, and is also pretty useless for using when taking photos of models.

I was thinking about mounting a strip of adjustable LED lights on the wall/ceiling above the desk, but they would have to be mains powered as I live in a rented property.

for lighting, my life changed when my wife bought me an OTT light from jo-ann fabrics.  it's true daylight, felixible and, well, kinda expensive. the set we got was about $149.00, but it came with a desk model and a much larger, much brighter floor model. they are awesome, and worth the price.

This is mine:

It may seem cluttered, but being painted white, and being able to put it away completely really helps. I keep most of my paints in seperate storage boxes on a high shelf, away from little hands :)

thats mine, the dual lamps are for painting and photography, slowly phasing out the gw paints in favour of vallejo.. my compressor sits on a set of drawers next to my desk along with most of my spray cans and big bottles of stuff (place is a mess currently hence the crap in the window.

What kind of bulbs have you got in your lamps? I'm considering a similar setup using lamps with LED bulbs.

2 daylight bulbs, led's tend to have a bit of a blue hue to them (normal lights project yellow light) where as the daylight bulbs are a very clinical and stark white.. they are the best going for photography as they dont alter the colours in your pictures, and are great for painting too.

Here's mine - I am also changing from GW to Vallejo paints - much easier to use...

This is it inbetween projects - normally you can't see the cutting board :)
