Fluffy wolves - a rules tweak

Somewhere in the fluff (or maybe Dornian heresy, it's hard to recall), I remember reading about a Space Wolf watching young wolves charging much larger prey and seeming to be doomed: but their attack drew the prey's attention and the older, more cunning wolves struck from the flank. This is how the Space Wolves traditionally fight: blending barbarism and bravado with steely cunning

Except that move to the tabletop and the young Blood Claws rarely get a showing, and rather than emerging in ambush, Grey Hunters zoom around in little metal boxes, quite against Russ's preference for the solid ground beneath his feet.

Reading the story of the wolf hunt made me think of a rule that might move away from the MSU tendency and return Blood Claws to the field. Warhammer players may recognise the source from which it's lovingly stolen/developed.

Simply: for every footslogging Blood Claw pack deployed at the start of the game, a footslogging Grey Hunter pack of equal or less size may Outflank. Either or both packs may have wolfguard, characters etc. as usual (though perhaps the outflanking Grey Hunters can't have Terminator wolf guard with them!)

Thoughts? Though technically this just gives Space Wolves more, I suspect it's still weaker tactically than the traditional model, so opponents may well be happy to accept it as a houserule, especially if you drop other things for a more traditional force (less mechanised, no riding wolves...)

cant SW already do this by taking an HQ with saga of the hunter[or what ever it is called that lets you outflank and give stealth]? your asking for free rules to buff BC.

I like the idea in theory. Yes, it's a buff to BCs, but that's kind of the point. They dont see much use because GH are generally better.

It's a free buff to BC, but it's more of an open question how much of a buff to space wolves as a whole that would be. Perhaps most people would still prefer all GH forces, in which case it would be more of a side grade than a straight buff to SW as a whole.

We already do this with a WP or WGBL taking Saga of the Hunter and Outflanking with a Grey Hunter pack.

Additionally, Native Americans learned flanking tactics historically from watching wolf packs hunting plains animals and duplicated the process by scaring the herd from one end, leading them to the waiting hunters ready to pounce. I've no doubt the same tactics were developed from tribes on other continents, etc.. this is just the only one I know of.

So, yes.. it's fluffy for Space Wolves, and yes we can already do it. No need to toss the rules out the window to suit our whims.

I am getting tired of this statement: "quite against Russ's preference for the solid ground beneath his feet."

Matched to all the other clever quotes of Leman Russ this cannot be a defining batttle doctrine. especially in a fluffy sense
