Leman Russ quotes

Funny thing is that there are no quotes of him being stubborn. In the ancient quotes He usually refers to situations where he talks about bravery and the importance of brotherhood. There is nothing about him praising stubborn behaviour.

"You strive for victory. That is obvious. What may be less obvious is the nature of victory. There are circumstances in which you can destroy the enemy utterly, without loss to your own forces, and yet the victory may be his. In all situations, you must first decide on the nature of victory, and then take steps to secure it. Avoid the instinct of fight first and think later." (Meditations, Book VI)

"A fortress circumvented ceases to be an obstacle. A fortress destroyed ceases to be a threat. Do not forget the difference." (attributed)[5]

"A fortress is built with blood and toil. Only by blood and toil may it be taken." (attributed)[5]

"Beat your thoughts to the mould of your will." (attributed)[6]

"Listen closely Brothers, for my life's breath is all but spent. There shall come a time far from now when our Chapter itself is dying, even as I am now dying, and our foes shall gather to destroy us. Then my children, I shall listen for your call in whatever realm of death holds me, and come I shall, no matter what the laws of life and death forbid. At the end I will be there. For the final battle. For the Wolftime." (last words of Leman Russ)[7]

"Only in the Space Marines of the Legiones Astartes are courage and expertise perfectly blended. In other troops they are present in varying degrees and proportions, and many scholars have debated their relative merits.

For my own part, I come down on the side of courage. For courage can sometimes make a virtue of inexperience. I myself have commanded Imperial Guard troops whose probitor units have achieved great things, because they were too inexperienced to realise that their goal was impossible." (Leman Russ on the military use of Whiteshields, De Natura Belli, Book XIV)[4]

"There are those who undervalue the Penal Battalions. But they should consider this: should a man who has wronged the Emperor be allowed to wrong Him further? For each man executed is a man who can no longer serve, and to fail in service to the Emperor is the greatest of sins." (Meditations on Imperial Command, Book XXI)[4]

"Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millennia cut off from the Imperium and assailed from all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to all." (Meditations on Imperial Command, Book XVI)[4]

"Harden your soul against decadence. But do not despise it, for the soft appearance of the decadent may be deceptive. One need only consider the Harlequin dancers of the Eldar to see the truth of this proposition." (A Book of Admonitions for the Legiones Astartes)[4]

"Here I am and here shall I die." (attributed to Leman Russ at the Battle of Rising Fell)[6]

Sacred Objects

Hello

Leman Russ wasn't originally a space viking - in fact he wasn't originally a primarch (he was created before the whole heresy thing had been written) or even a space marine in the original book - he was an agent of the Adeptus Terra. Hence his early quotes show him as more a tactician than a warrior.

Then GW decided to make him rubbish.

Fresh one from Blood of Asaheim:

"You will be faster than they are, stronger, quicker to sense corruption and with full sanction to destroy it. You will be girded in the armour of the gods and carry blades of ruin. You will never age, never wither, never weary. And yet, in all of this, what remains your greatest gift?

Only this: while you are a brotherhood, you are unbreakable. While you form the shieldwall, guarding your pack-mates as if they were your own kin-blood, you can not be resisted. Solely by treachery can this power be undone, as we have learned. We emerge from the lesson stronger, tempered by the knowledge of how low our species can sink. We now know what waits for us should we fail, and that is well, for its better to know your enemy's face than for it to remain hidden by shadow.

Never forget this. When night comes again, as it surely will, only your brotherhood will protect you. Preserve it, and you will endure. Let it fracture, let it fail, and i tell you truly: our time, humanity's time, will be over."
