Floating Chaos Skull Rock

Recommended Posts

Finished this terrin piece for my Iron Warriors the other day. It's a bit sorcery-heavy for the demonic engineers, but I just had to try the floating chain-trick.

In hindsight, I might have tried to apply the legion-typical hazardstripes to the girders, but that might have become too colorful for the overall impression.

Enjoy and comment

Glued the chains straight?

I'm betting on magnets. Magnet sorcery.

With a thread title like this, clicking was a must. I'm glad I did. I don't care much for the color- it looks a touch too pink, maybe. It really clashes with the gunmetal IW on dark gray bases.

But, well, it's a floating skull rock. You can get away with a lot when you have a floating skull rock.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments!

And yes, the chains are glued straight. It's pretty delicate, therefor it shall be designated as impassable terrain, so no models on top of it ever!

Any chance of a tutorial?

I hope I'm allowed to link this, it's a WIP thread I made on another site.

I wonder...if you increased the number of chains, would it have enough strength for a mini or two to stand on top of? Or would it become so crowded with chains that another method would be better?

I doubt it. It really needs just a bit of sideways-momentum to break the chains. You could totally put some models on it, but you'd still have to be careful. The current model also carries a handful plastic models, but it's swaying a bit.

Plus I prefer for my particular model to look 'floatier' with not as many chains obscuring the empty space below, but that's not to say that many chains would look bad.

I think for stability one should try to go with obscured wires. Like, if you let chains hang in pairs, side to side, then maybe one could cover up a sturdy wire inbetween.

Ah, now that's a good idea.

Or perhaps you could twist two chains around each other (even with a stiff wire between, as you suggest).
