tvih
I've been planning on making a gaming table at home, for two purposes - obviously to play games with, but also to act as a sort of showcase for the models when not playing a game. Much nice to have them in an appropriate scenery rather than just on a shelf! I'm not sure on the exact size yet, but it's probably going to be at the very least somewhere around 120x120cm, but could well be bigger. I'm planning on making it an urban map, because other than being fun to play urban battles also seem to be plentiful in fluff (all three books I've read were mostly city battles, too), plus they can look quite nice as there's some nice ruins available. Though on that note it's a shame there's no 40k buildings that are actually intact, outside of the Bastion and FoR. As a starting point I was looking at basically one each of GW's ruins as well as some of the accessories, a Bastion, a Landing pad plus one piece of each Wall of Martyrs kit - sort of a partial replacement for the city not having a huge wall or anything, plus I need an excuse to get the Bunker because I like how it looks. These would cost about 250 euros + postage from Wayland. Beyond that I'm a bit uncertain. From what I've understood, the GW ruins can be combined to make bigger ruins? So that could be an option. Another I've been looking at is the Battlefield in a Box ruins. One of each would cost about 100 euros. But I'm just not sure if that'd work well visually with the GW ruins. They're so different. The BiaB ruins have thick walls, relatively little detail beyond the "weathered" surface. GW ones are thin and with lots of extra detail. Also it's a bit of a question mark whether these will be entirely needed, as it depends on the size of the table. The 250 euros set would after all have 6 buildings plus the WoM kits, and some additional thingies. The other edge of the table also would likely be more open, to signify the edge of the city. I suppose it'd help planning if I had the "footprints" of each of the kits, or better yet 3D models... but obviously I don't. So as for the questions, has anyone used a mix of BiaB and GW, and if so, did you feel they fit decently enough together aesthetically? Any other ideas for suitable kits (perhaps intact buildings)? Hellios
It is fairly easy to make your own ruins, or human building sin general... Add a few GW and keep some common themes to bind all the terrain pieces together. Look on eBay and so on for ruined vehicles (people who have destroyed a tank with glue, pain or the dark arts), these can often be acquired for next to nothing, and while they might require too much effort to use in your army they can easily be salvaged to make terrain. Also consider scratch build/papercraft designs on the internet. You may not feel that you can build an entire Thunderhawk, but you may be able to produce enough to make a convincing wreckage site. Also what a great objective? Rescue Cpt. Heroinicus from his downed Thunderhawk! Google search should be able to give you lots of inspiration and maybe a few guides as well ;) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/273245-planning-a-gaming-table-for-home/#findComment-3335310 Share on other sites
d3m01iti0n
Ill let you know what Im doing. I bought two folding tables; placed together its roughly 6x4. Its got a battle mat on it right now, but I bought a ton of foam board from my local hardware store. Was maybe 20 bucks for 8x8. I will be cutting those into four sections and texturing them. I also cut up cardboard boxes and use them for ruins. I have a big one with two floors I cut gothic-style doors and windows. Have a bunch of toilet paper/paper towel tubes Im going to use for pipelines. Just need spray paint. tvih
It is fairly easy to make your own ruins, or human building sin general...I did consider scratch building, and I MIGHT try doing some... but on the whole I'm not skilled enough to do something that'd be aesthetically on the level of the models, which is the objective here. Those Pegasus buildings could work. At least with the BiaB stuff, as they're somewhat similar in style. They're a bit more expensive per kit, but seems they could be slightly larger, too? Gurth
I own a number of items by Miniature Scenery and am very happy with them. They sit kind of halfway between scratchbuilding and putting together a GW- or Pegasus-style building in terms of how hard they are to make look good.
