Real world/present day items in the Horus Heresy

Recommended Posts

For a long time the 40k background presented a setting that was notionally within our real world's future but so far distant as to be essentially totally divorced from it. With the Horus Heresy we've started to see that some items from our world do still exist or are known at least in the Great Crusade era. I don't have the books to hand but here are the ones I know off the top of my head:

The Lightning Tower - from the description of Malcador's apartments it is clear he has the Mona Lisa, Van Gogh's Sunflowers and another famous painting though I can't remember what it is.

A Thousand Sons - Ahriman has a deck of Tarot cards dating from the second millenium. Also Magnus knows the ancient Egyptian legends of Horus and comes to believe that they are actually an ancient warning about the Heresy.

Prospero Burns - There is a least one quote from the dramaturge Shakespire from the second millenium and it is mentioned that they now have full texts of all three of his plays.

Geographically we have places like Merica and Nord Afrik that clearly reference present day parts of the world. Regicide (i.e. king killing) is obviously chess or a descendant of it.

Can others help me expand this list? Also, what artefacts or terms would you like to see make a cameo?

There once was a giant thread where everyone collected all of the geographically references mentioned in the Heresy.  A little search fu should pull it up, so we can avoid having to rehash all of that.

Well, there is a thread here about ancient Terra, it has quite a lot of info in there already. Too bad the search function on this forum is so user-unfriendly...

So I'll refer to discussions elsewhere with this info:

Ancient Terra, Links to Ages Past

Pre-Unity Terra, Transfer for the thread on the old board

Wish I had a name like H.P. Lovecraft.

Instead I got the most common Christian name. Oh well ;.(

To be fair, his name was just Howard Phillips Lovecraft. He got lucky with the last name, but initials ALWAYS made you sound cooler. ;)

J.J. Harrop sounds like an author of fiction designed for airports, for instance. Perhaps "legal thrillers."

What about the map the emperor gifted to Horus that we hear mentioned a few times

And I'm pretty sure I think I can't remember which book it was mentioned but there was a map found that had the old terra earth on it

I like how some artifacts have survived to 30 or 40K.

Likely the Mona Lisa was kept in stasis during the DAoT and then perhaps preserved in the private collection of some Age of Strife tyrant? It is not altogether implausible that some 2nd millenium stuff managed to survive to the Heresy and beyond
