Old Blood Red Primer Equivalent

Recommended Posts

So, I need to find a primer equivalent for the old GWs "Blood Red".  I usually brush it on over a black base coat so something a little darker might work as well... I'm hesitant to start purchasing all the different army painter or other sprays out there only to find the colour doesn't match quite right...  Any info or tips would be greatly appreciated.  I have 5000pts plus to still paint so I would much prefer to find a viable alternative to brushing on a OOP paint that I only have 2 jars of...

Thanks

From what I tested, the Army Painter "Pure Red" primer should be ok. On their site they have a pdf guide to paint space marine with their product, so you can view the result with pure red and dragon red (the two red primers of Army Painter).

From what I understood, Pure Red = Blood Red and Dragon Red = Red Gore.

Of course it has a bit of "advertising" style, but it's interesting.

my experience with the army painter primers shows their pure red to be about what youre looking for...as far as a primer red goes.  a bit of shade/washing after this primer gets it almost directly comparable to GW blood red paint, and very close to the old red primer.

I've heard that mephiston red is more like the old blood red than the mechrite red that GW says it look like. I would check that one out.

mephiston is closer to the old scab red.  It makes a good base for painting reds but it is a few shades darker than blood red.
