Next Space Wolf codex?

I'm afraid you almost certainly heard wrong, since there should still be another codex this year (in november) and it's very likely that orks and tyranids are ahead of SW in the codex schedule. That puts SW in the second quarter of 2014 - the current rumour is may.

I'm also curious as to how effective Land Speeder Typhoons will be in terms of synergy with other unit choices.

These are currently the most expensive models I have in terms of conversion cost, so it would be a shame if they become useless... =/

they got 15pts cheaper in the SM codex, so i would think ours will also. they are the only varient i use at the moment and have done quite well in the last three games, just keep them away from small arms fire and they are reasonably survivable with the enemy having to actually commit long range weaponry they would oherwise be using on my rhinos and razorbacks.

  • 2 weeks later...

I fear the new codex:

- Grey Hunters will pay their special weapons

- Rune Priests will have ramdom psychic powers (but probably will be cheaper)

- Combi weapons wil cost 10 points

- Missile launchers will cost 15 points...

And the advantages will be:

- Acute senses will have sense

- Frost axes will be cheaper than power fists

- Storm shields will be cheaper (I wish)

- We will have flakk missiles (but are expensive and bad)

- Maybe we will have an ugly monstruous creature with the shape of a wolf or a fire giant or some strange idea like those...

We lose more than we win

What would the others have? Red Moon - allows GHs to take Heavy Weapons OR Special Weapons (must choose which), Morkai - gives D6 units Infiltrate and MTC, I'd rather have Ragnar's as charging from DPs (the scatter isn't too bad especially if you go midfield) and perhaps have upgunned engines on Rhinos for Krakendoom - Ironwolf - any WG unit may take a LR transport? - Grimnar would likely stay the same (I'd like WG Troops AND Elites) what d'you folks think?

Most of the changes you fear are probably warranted, i'd add runic weapons to the list as well based on my experience with eldar (runes of warding became horrible). Whats gonna make or break the codex is how well costed the supporting units are. Right now our codex has awful internal balance, which leads to a lot of our armies appearing the same (rps, GH, LFs) nerfing those units while making some other choices better may lead to a more interesting codex.

That said I wouldn't worry about a MC its a lot more likely that it'll be an ugly flyer.

I'm curious what they do with frost weapons i'm hoping they count as an ap lower instead of the str bonus (so a sword would be ap 2).

I was thinking, that maybe they do something like doctrines for us? But instead of doctrines we will have our 12 lords tactics. For Ragnars company all drop pods don't scatter, or for Krakendooms you can charge from Rhinos etc.

I doubt they'd give us 12 doctorines when the vanilla book has 7. That said I could see us getting a supplement for ragnars company that very well could have a similiar rule to what you suggested.

July would be fine. Hopefully it means that they will take a little extra time to tweak things right. To me it breaks down to these changes.

MAJOR TWEAKS/COMPLETE REDO: Iron Priest, Blood Claws, Wolf Scouts, Wolf Tail Talisman, Frost Blades, Flyer/air defence

MINOR TWEAKS/CHANGES:Rune Priests, Bjorn The Fell Handed, Sagas, some wargear, Thunder Wolf options, Centurion options for Wolf                                                Guard/Long Fangs, general unit costs, army traits

Thanks jbickb. I can hold out for July if that's the case. I have the expectation that GW will continue to push stuff back. But its okay. School will have my busy until May at least. Thats why I was hoping for a May release so I can have the whole summer to update my wolves and get plenty of games in with the new dex. It wont really matter if I get a new dex or not, I still plan on getting in games.  I can't believe its almost been 5 years since our last codex lol. Time flies.

I think we will be the next marine codex. As much as people say that BA need it, they just got a digital codex so I don't suspect them to get the next one.  Grey Knights don't need it.

Inspiration by the development team may hold it back.  They may be sidetracked with C:SM supplements.

Just a heads up that was extrapolation of old rumors, so salt heavily as Natfka hasn't said to much about a wolves codex in recent posts, and those were based on rumors anyway, so we shall have to wait and see, bit it seems like the likely course gw would take. Just salt to taste as I am not a divination rune priest by any stretch. ;)

For those that haven't seen yet, from Faeit 212:

that Blood Angels and Space Wolves will have the following new models in 2014 and may be released together.

BA:
Mephiston finecast
Dante finecast
Sanguinary Priest plastic clampack
Blood Angels Assault Squad plastic kit

SW:
Logan Grimnar finecast
Ragnar Blackmane finecast
Wolf Guard plastic clampack
Space Wolves Relic Battletank plastic kit

So if the above is accurate... note that we already have a finecast Logan Grimnar and finecast Ragnar Blackmane, so if they are going to be part of an upcoming "release" that means they are a re-sculpt.  The "Wolf Guard" clampack is probably one of those single-pose jobbies like the Chaos Champion.  However, notice that final one!  The idea that the wolves would get a special "relic battletank" seems very plausible.  The trend in codexes lately is to bring back some of the "old" stuff that was dropped from more recent codexes.  We all know that we used to be able to take the Leman Russ tank, and I was thinking there was a non-zero chance that they would add that option back in.  However, the idea of them adding in not the "stock" LR but our own unique "relic" tank seems like a believable way they would take it.  Also, extrapolating from other releases, I would say it's unlikely we'd get more than 1 new ground unit kit.  So, if the above holds true, we'll be getting a new tank and not some ridiculous "big wolf" MC.  In addition to the tank, we can probably expect 2 unique flyers in a dual kit.

Dragongaze would probably be the same as Grimnar having WGs as Troops, if not though I can still work with GHs as troop choice.

I'd think Gunnar = just as Troops OR upgrade a GH pack leader to WG and Grimnar = both Troops & Elites.

On other things - I doubt we'd get a LG re-scuplt (plus it's a nice sculpt), would love a) re-sculpt as it's rubbish :/ not sure bout a tank, would be nice BUT could go horribly wrong.

The tank it realy does depends what they do.

If its basically a leman russ variant it may be quite nice

If its a tank with some sort of AA gun (rather than jsut giving us the new CSM anti-air tanks) then im not bothered.

If its some sort of 'huge, but smaller than super-heavy' tank...in line with say that huge tau walker and the big eldar walker..im also not too fussed

Special "Great Company Traits" would be righteous! Think of the possibilities!

 - Sven Bloodhowl's could be an upgrade his Bloodclaws and Grey Hunters, giving them D6 hits during a charge to represent the Marines breathing fire into the enemy line.

 - Kjarl Grimblood would have a Company Trait similar to the Salamanders where all flamer weapons are twin-linked or cheaper upgrades for squads.

 - Ragnar Blackmane might gain the ability to re-roll for reserves or the scatter when pods arrive. Ragnar's unit or any unit in 6" of him may assault the turn they arrive.

 - Krom Dragongaze is a tough one. Wolf Guard as Troops? Or maybe each Battle Leader or Wolflord can take a Wolf Guard pack as part of the HQ choice?

 - Egil Ironwolf would require all units in his Company to be mounted. Transports are Fast Vehicles.

 - Bjorn Stormwolf is tricky too. Vindicators come in Squadrons or are fast vehicles? Bikers can be taken as Elites if so, they are Grey Hunters mounted on Bikes, not Blood Claws.

 - Harald Deathwolf. I am not a fan of this guy. Likely could field Wolf Guard on Thunderwolves or can take Thunderwolf Cavalry as Elites and Fast Attack? Maybe an option for an entire TWC list?

 - Logan Grimnar is Logan Bloody-Best-There-Ever-Was-Grimnar. Keep his personal perks and the possibility to take WG as Troops. Maybe give his Great Company the army wide power ups like the Ultramarine's.

 - Gunnar Red Moon. Make everyone who cries "cheese" when you field three Long Fang Packs weep bitter tears when Long Fangs are taken as Elite's as well! Or Instead, take Wolf Guard with Heavy Weapons and they can gain Tank Hunter or Relentless. Cheesy? Spare me, most things flying are cheesy.

 - Erik Morkai is a deceivingly easy option. Take Wolf Scouts as Troops. Perhaps infantry in an army including Erik Morkai gain Move Through Cover and Infiltrate?

 - Engir Krakendoom. My Man! Rhino chassis vehicles are assault vehicles. Swiftclaws may be take as troops. Wolf Guard assigned as Pack Leaders to a Swiftclaw pack receive a Bike as a free upgrade.

 - Bran Redmaw would make for a crazy fun Wolflord. In Space Wolf Packs numbering 5+ a single marine may take Mark of the Wulfen. If pack numbers 10+ a second Marine may take MotW. if a pack numbers 15 marines then a third may take Motw. If a character takes Motw as an upgrade he gains Furious Charge and Hatred. If this is an Independent Character and he joins a pack, the pack gains Furious Charge and Hatred. (or Crusader, each would be decent)

I like the possibility (How ever slim or negligible it really is) we would again field a Leman Russ. Also, re-sculpts would be amazing. I foresee a lot of kit bashing in the future!
