Color scheme of homemade chapter?

Recommended Posts

Hey!

I've decided to create my own successor chapter from the Blood Angels.

Strolled around in the lexicanum viewing all the chapters of the space marines, both loyalist and renegade/chaos.

Noticed that there's really no loyalist chapter with a purple theme but a dozen of chaos chapters with purple theme.

Is there a reason for loyalist not to use purple?

Hard to come up with a secondary color with it I would imagine. Emperors Children are purple/gold, Hawk Lords are purple. Only other chapter that uses purple is a joke chapter Emperors Pointy Sticks and they were/are purple/white with some yellow.

Any other combination just looks goofy, Purple/Red only looks good if its the last 2 flavors in a Skittles bag

Purple and blue can work. Purple and green give a bit of a halloween feel, but can work if you balance them well.

The main reason is that purple was the signature colour of the Emperor's Children, who caused the whole Heresy thing in the first place.

Souldrinkers have a purple thing going on... Purple and white should work nicely if you ask me... Or a lighter grey... The problem is that a light pastel kind of purple isn't going to look very aggressive, so you have to go dark. Your secondary color can't be too dark then because it won't be very visually appealing. Metallic colors may be fine, but you may get mistaken for Emperors Child...

I'd blame the fall of Horus on the Wordbearers myself. A good number of Emperors Children remained loyal to the Emperor including Lucius until jealousy got the better of him and he betrayed his loyal brethren...

Uniqueness will start with the fluff you create for your chapter. Followed by how you create your army. Meaning force organization, units chosen, play style, etc., maybe thinking about these things first will help you decide on a paint scheme

I want them to be unique but i guess that's literary impossible :|

On the one hand, there are only so many colors that the human eye can see. On the other, there are so many colors that the human eye can see!

Color palette alone does not dictate whether a DIY chapter/warband is unique. Where the colors are, what symbols are used, and other physical characteristics all help set your work apart.

The most important thing is to not give up. Use the painter and play around with purple schemes.

No worries, my own chapter has grown from a standard Black Templar force into an independent crusade bent on vengeance against a rogue inquistor. Although based strongly on BT paint schemes, I've adapted a paint scheme that's more visually appealing to me. It also allows me to collect models that I can use to play my army as BT, vanilla marines, and even Chaos!

So let your imagination go for a wild ride and see where it takes you! We pay enough money for our little plastic men, so we should be able to do whatever we like with em!

In addition to color choices, you also have freedom in patterns and designs.  Purple and white has been done, but you can shift around the colors to make something which looks altogether new.  And as others said prior, even the bits you use will affect the final result.

But with purple in particular- white gray or black as they are neutral (white generally is the most striking).  Greens and blues make for a cool color theme, which can either be Toxic Avenger neon or a muted, dark look.  I would steer clear of reds oranges and most yellows.  Gold and silver also work well enough, depending on shade and quantity.

No matter what combination or colors, position, designs and bits you use, the important things are that 1- you like it and 2- it stays consistent.

I was looking at the How To Paint Space Marines book a friend has the other day - has a nice example of a DIY chapter with dark purple and bone, towards the end of the book, they were call the Sons of ... something I can't quite remember! But I do remember them looking effective.

I believe that would be the "Sons of Jaghatai"; a purple scheme with a bone white shoulderpad.

my children of eternity are a purple, more like a violet purple.

there successor chapters all have a purple theme tied into them:

scions of the infinite are a red violet

sons of idaen are a medium purple and bone scheme

steel disciples wear dark purple robes

purple is one of my favorite colors so i like to use it [img=http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/

My Chaos Marines used purple in two ways. The first had Calthan Brown as a base for the standard marines, with a Leviathan Purple wash, trimmed with Mithril Silver and Blazing Orange for the Shoulder Pads (Badab Black here). For the Thousand Sons portion, they had Hormagaunt Purple base, Silver trim, and Orange shoulder pads.

It was amazing how well that Purple Wash toned the Brown in to something completely unique. I never tried it with red, though. No, wait, I think I used the purple wash on the hair of my Chaos Hounds, and it turned out really well (at least better than their Iyanden skin did).

Purple really can go well with the primary colors, depending on shade and brightness. You may also want to consider quartering, halving, or in my case with my Ghost Wardens in my profile pic, select body parts.

So some things to work with.

I want them to be unique but i guess that's literary impossible :|

Being unique isn't just the color because several Chapters (Legions) use Purple (these are all official GW):

Alpha legion (per Dan Abnett)

Death Eagles (quartered purple and white)

Emperor's Children

Grief Bringers (purple and green)

Purple Stars

Harbingers

Hawk Lords

Damn Company of Lord Caustos

Extinction Angels

Flawless Host (pink and purple)

Imperial Stars

Soul Drinkers

Violators

Warriors of Mayhem

There are only so many colors out there. Don't be discouraged simply because someone else uses those colors. I had the only orange Chapter around for a good while and now there are dozens (GW included).

What you combine it with is what can make it pop. While not a SM, I did this inquisitor in purple back when the Coteaz mini first came around:

I think the best advice when picking a colour scheme is to keep it simple. If youre using more than two colours and maybe a third for squad markings etc, its gonna look too busy and not very believable. I always cringe a little when I see blue armour, with orange and red pouldrons, a green helmet and white squad markings. Keep it simple, keep it real bro

Purple has a few good colour contrasts/compliments:

White, Black, Bone, Gold, Yellow.

Here are a few ideas (none are mine).

I've also seen red or green used too, but it really hurts my eyes.

One of my own chapters (Snake Lords) has a purple tint to its armour (purple ink over vermin fur) so its worth remembering there's more than one shade of purple too :P

Brother,

A good rule of thumb when picking complimentary colors is to use a color wheel. You can use google to find one. Basically it places the colors on a wheel and the shade directly across from each other are the colors that compliment each other most. For purple shades I believe green or yellow shades are directly across, think Lex Luthor.

Of course black, white or grey will work as they are neutrals and work well with every color, think the Road Runner.

What will make your insignia pop is to use the British heraldry rules of tincture. I.E. yellow (gold) or white (silver) on a color background. Like white insignia on purple. Or if the backgorund is white or yellow then use a color insignia. Lots of people use black on red or red on black. This looks great close up or on a large surface, but on small scale mini's can tend to blend to the vision and you lose detail.

Hope this helps.
