Kronus Stormbringer Posted April 9, 2013 Share Posted April 9, 2013 Having bought a whole load of Heresy era gear at the Forgeworld weekender I decided to paint them up as Iron Hands since I paint Sons of Medusa for 40k. Cant say im great at painting black but ive started work on a test mini to see if I can get it somewhere near a decent gaming standard. The pics below before the final highlight of the black armour and an ink wash, i'll probably weather it after that too. MagicMan Posted April 9, 2013 Share Posted April 9, 2013 Looks pretty sweet to me dude. Its quite a matte black from what i can see, not huge amounts of definition, like edge highlighting. Can be a cool look in itself, depends what you like. :) Maybe try a test mini (AoBR or something) with some edge highlighting, see what you think. Yeah It can get tidious sometimes but you dont have to put highlighting over every edge. Just around some of the striking parts: Top curve the pauldron as well as some of the pauldron edges. Some on the breastplate. Some on the upper legs and toes. Some on the hands. I'd say try it if you want, if not its looking good. Also If you want an interesting way of painting black I can tell you but you'll have to go on a little faith as I dont have a model I can show you. Prime your guy then pain him dark grey (I think Mechanicus Grey is the darkest GW has) then wash it with badab black until it looks black. You will get a really nice texture and striking black that doesn't even need a highlight because it shows more detail than Jet Black. If you want to try it have a go, even said pure black looks alright and ultimately its up to you. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Normally I would have gone for red but I already have a fair bit of red on the mini. Wrath of Iron has pale blue lenses on the cover and I quite like them .. thoughts? Kronus Stormbringer Posted April 22, 2013 Author Share Posted April 22, 2013 I'll get some better pics up tomorrow but heres how the Iron Hand turned out, cant really see but there is some edge highlighting which on future Iron Hands i'll probably use a bit more as long as its a subtle line and not a massive highlight. Im going to paint my HH models as Iron Hands but had a few spare finecast minis that were faulty, this is one of them hence the head swap. I've never painted black power armor before so wanted to try it before painting my forgeworld minis. Now that i've done it im considering painting up some 40k models too although I cant see the IH ever taking to the firld with the SoM and being happy about it lol. Once my lightbox is here i'll take some pics of both the chapters together. Kronus Stormbringer Posted April 30, 2013 Author Share Posted April 30, 2013 Working on another Iron hand veteran and a Sons of Medusa veteran, the SoM vet will join my growing army of green while the the Iron hand will be the second mini painted to help me get used to painting black. The black has been base coated with Vallejo model air black and then had an airbrush highlight of model air German grey. I'll be ading some edge highlighting with a 50:50 mix of german grey and codex grey. The gold and silver metallics are just about finished leaving the tabard as the only colour choice remaining. I think i'll only paint up a couple of squads of 40k Iron Hands with a razorback and two AoBR dreadnoughts I have kicking around as I have my 30k forgeworld models sitting waiting for some colour at the moment and they will be getting the black treatment once im more comfortable painting it.
