6th ed tips?

Recommended Posts

greetings brothers (and sisters)

ive been out of the game for a few months, which conincided with the release of 6th.. i think ive only played 3 or 4 games of 6th edition.

So i was wondering what sisters can do in 6th to counter all the flyers, what tactics work best and other hints and tips..

just to help me get my eye in again, i have a tourney in a few weeks and id like to be as prepared as possible.

i was thinking of keeping celestine with 10 flame seraphim, just becuase they are awesome.

im also thinking of bringing back immolator borne dom squads (with meltas) and was thinking of using jacobus attached to a large unit of HB armed rets all siting on an aegis line with quad gun.

jacobus is worth taking for rerolls to faith, but he gives the +1 to rolls and attached to rets can get rending which he can use when firing the quad gun at BS5.

thoughts?

(im trying to avoid using Ig allies atm)

in my (admittedly small) experience with flyers, i find that LOTS of exorcists helps. as many as you can squeeze in. but thats me. it would seem that the aegis line w/quad gun would be an excellent option.

as far as celestine and the seraphim go, that is a must. seriously, that little combo is one of the reasons the sisters are so wonderful.

beyond all that, fit as many units of sisters as possible in. i personally prefer to go to 10 with my dominions and put them in a rhino, but to each his own.

i have never honestly played sisters (yet, building an army myself atm), but from my experience reading the rules and from playing a flier heavy guard list i would say retributors with heavy bolters and dominions are your best bet as well as melta immolators for anti flier

the retributors get 12 shots potentially rending, that is allot of fire and the best way to take down a flier without skyfire is pure weight of bullets. the rending means they can potentially take out any flier in the game (i can't think of anything with more than armour 13, might be wrong on that, but even armour 14 can be glanced to death)

dominions get twin linked meltas, now they need to get close so you have to try position them so the flier will pass over them i think, but twin linked is very useful against fliers, same thing goes for the immolator, it just has more range

so is the saint really that good? i mean she looks reasonably beasty, but t3 with no eternal warrior? and seems fairly geared to cc in what im pretty sure is a ranged army. she does keep getting up again though i suppose

Yes she is in 6th edition games, though its not so much about her killing power. You can use to take decent/ good chapters in cc by challenging. She may not win, but you most likely aren't going to lose her permanently. That same trait allows to deny objectives and deny your opponent the ability to kill your Warlord. As far as I am concerned she is the only HQ to take, even over Jacobus. She is cheap as well. It's all about denial really.

she generally does approx 2 MEQ wounds per turn in combat, so great for challenging unit leaders with PWs.

her 2+/4++ is good enough to stop alot of hits, but as noted already, its her ability to get up after being killed thats the real bonus

plus a heavy flamer is always nice

The Sisters do have a few anti-flyer options available to them. The most obvious being the quadgun with the defense line. It already gets twin-linked and 4 shots so anything with a BS of 4 will do do just fine on the gun.

Heavy bolter rets have a decient chance of hurting a flyer even with having to take snap shots. FWIW, tis is the only unit I take a simulacrum for because I really need those HB to be rending.

Dominions with twin-linked melta can also bring down a flyer easier than might be expected. Range is limited but 5 twinlinked shots should out 1 to 2 melta hits on a zooming flyer.

Each Exorcists has about a 40% chance of hurting most flyers. Not the best use of an Exorcist in my opinion but it is an option.

One thing to consider is if you are firing the quadgun with another anti-flier capable unit (like the retributors) is that they have to all fire on the same target. Unless you fired the quadgun in interceptor mode during your opponents turn, of course.

But in my honest opinion, you don't have to worry about most flers. Shoot what you can but don't waste time on them when there are ground forces that are more threatening.

What does she need with EW anyway? She can not be removed from the game. If Draigo takes 4 wounds he dies and is gone, EW or not. Saint Celestine takes 4 wounds and she stands up next turn. Logan Grimnar gets swarmed by a mass of plague bearers and he is tied up for several turns. Saint Celestine gets swarmed and she dies only to stand back up out of combat and in heavy flamer range. Really, she does better without eternal warrior smile.png

Also, joined with a seraphim squad and they can all hit and run on I7.

Doubles to everything already said about Seraphim, Celestine, Dominions and Retributors.

Celestine is a steal. She's worth more like 165 points than 115, she slaughters MEq and 3+ Monstrous Creatures (like all the Necron ones) and characters and she can escape combat by dying.

Imperial Armour: Aeronautica gives us two more anti-flyer options, though - the Aquila Lander (which is meh) and the Avenger Strike Fighter (which is REALLY awesome).

The Aquila is a little expensive for a 7-transport flyer with a single autocannon, but the Avenger is what the Nephilim wants to be when it grows up. Twin-linked lascannon, an AP3 Megabolter, Supersonic and Strafing Run, for just shy of the cost of a Battle Sister squad with two meltaguns. Oh, and it's got a cute little Skyfire Heavy Stubber on the back that can shoot a separate target to the rest of the guns. smile.png

The only downside to the Avenger is that it takes up a Heavy Support slot, but I'd sacrifice a second Exorcist for it any day.

so i must admit ignorance here, what flyers can we take without allies in this ed?

With the standard 40K rules: none.

With Forge World 40K approved: Aquila Lander (Fast), Arvus Lighter (Fast), Avenger Strike Fighter (Heavy)

With Apocalyse: Marauder Bomber and Marauder Destroyer (Super Heavy Flyer)

There's no such thing as "FW Approved", by the way - just some places that are "FW Banned".

lol

Symantics ...

This is still common to not allow FW at independent game stores. At least it is around here. I do understand their reasons, tho. If you are going to use their space they want you using models you buy at their store. If you play at GW stores or just play with friends then it will not matter. Just be aware that there are places that do not allow FW before you go spending all that money on a model you can not use. Just ask a few people you play with first and it should be no big deal. If they say no, just find another place to play;)

[Edit]

The rules for the flyers are in Imperial Armour: Aeronautica. There is another book out called Aeronautica Imperialis and thease are not the same. Be sure to get the Imperial Armour book.

While we are talking about IA books, the Repressor (an iconic Sisters of Battle transport tank) is in IA:2. It has updated rules in a PDF but you may have to search the web for the current update. It looks like it was taken down from FW's site hopefully to be either updated to 6th or (better yet) a rewrite of the IA:2 book.

Awesome! thanks for that bit of info. now i just need to track down the rules, and figure out how to make one (or more of them) out of a valkyrie or 2...

You can convert the Avenger from the Nephilim more easily than from the Valkyrie. msn-wink.gif The Nephilim has the "Avenger Megabolter", which is an AP4 version of the Avenger Bolt Cannon, and it has twin-linked lascannons as a weapon option to replace the megabolter. IT's easy enough to convert - there are some suggestions here; http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/270592-sob-flyer/
