How to make a Siege Army

Morning gentlemen. So, I've been contemplating what Ive been wanting for a Horus Heresy army, really thinking about what themes I wanted and what play style I wanted. So it seems to me that of all the models, all the rulse, and all the fluff that I like most, Siege Warfare and Breacher Marines are my absolute favorite.

Now, I'm not exactly familiar with the Horus Heresy books but what I'm looking for is would anyone have advice on how to make a viable and fun Siege army that can work even outside of siege games? I know it's not the smartest idea... But I REALLY like those shields.... :P

Thanks in advance for the help, guys.

hmm in terms of fitting the 'seige' mantra i would suggest spartan assault tanks, artillery, rapier batteries and the like, also a few drop pods wouldnt hurt id think. infantry wise i think at least a few terminators is a must, as well as breachers and master of signals.. hope this helps

two squads of breachers, probably full twenty man units to get the cheap bodies, with apothecaries to try and get them across the board intact. you could take a breacher squad and a tac squad actually, put the breachers in front and the tacs behind but give them CC weapons to represent a storming party coming in behind the first wave. a support weapons squad or two to claim additional objectives and give supporting fire, artillery batteries to knock out their heavies and rapier thudd guns because they are cool and if you are taking nuncio voxes, you need some sort of indirect fire to call in, right?

lead by a siege breaker obviously, maybe with a master of signal. i don't know if i'd bother tooling up the siege breaker, he's almost a captain in points to begin with, and he's never going to be a CC monster, with TDA you're talking like 150 points probably, and if he's not going with terminators, i'm not sure that's a great idea. maybe give him a boarding shield and AA and stick him with the breachers.

Yes, all of the above 2 posts are really good.

Will your siege army play on a board with lots of terrain? If so, flamers and heavy flamers are handy as well. Dreadnoughts & contemptors can be useful in a siege list and in general use too.

In the horus heresy book betrayal you have choices for your artillery, including whirlwinds, basilisks and medusas. A vindicator can be good too, but you only get to use one per hvy slot.

You can make your own Durak Rask, Siegemaster of the Death Gaurd.

It's not too hard to find the rules if you look around if you don't have the betrayal book. But he has a thunder hammer and volkite serpents and has the basic rules of a siege breaker with the added effect of the warlord trait that makes his unit reroll misses at enemies within 3" of an objective (iirc)

Not a bad choice and fits in with the theme you're looking at. Plus he's eviiiiiil >:-)

Thanks for the good feedback so far, guys.

The idea that's currently been sweeping in my head is the concept of A Word Bearers Heresy army with World Eater allies. The idea came from after reading Betrayer where the Word Bearers and World Eaters are razing Ultramar together.

So what I think I might do is something along the lines of two or three breacher squads (Word Bearers) with a large mob of Rampagers swarming in behind them. What do you think of that as the main body of the force?

think about how much that will cost, and where do you get the points for the support options you will need.

now, i'm glad you're staying away from iron warriors or imperial fists, as they are the prototypical siege armies, but other legions had similar formations, so it's nice you're trying your own thing.  personally, i like the betrayal legion organization as a starting point, so maybe take two breacher squads with a tactical support squad to give yourself more fire power?  contemptors would be a great choice that i didn't mention before, and the rampagers would be cool, but you'll have to take a tactical or assault squad as well, and that's going to come to at least 6 or 7 hundred points with an HQ more than likely.  how many points are you shooting for in total?

Not quite sure, really. Generally I'm just one of those guys who picks up a bunch of models he likes, makes them, and then tries and works them into a functional force, but with the price of Forge World models, I'm going to have to formulate a list to work with. Points-wise, I'm not quiet sure. How big do you guys normally play your games. I'm thinking maybe shooting for ultimately a 2000 point list with a bit of extras to add some variety. I know that I want a destroyer squad and moritat centurian but they won't be part of my usual lists. I'll look into the HH book a bit more, see what I can find.

Ya, that was one thing that I thought about. Honestly I have never felt much love for Iron Warriors, or Iron Hands and while I do like Imperial Fists, I can't exactly say they're my favorite. The Legion that strikes me as the most interesting is the one that changes the most drastically and in my opinion, that is the Word Bearers.
