Repentia questions

Hello again,

So I have a few questions about Sisters Repentia; I've been trying to find answers online but info seems to be a little vague. I haven't read any of the sisters BL stories so perhaps someone can help me out.

1. When a sister becomes a Repentia, is she still able to pray to the Emperor, or is she considered unworthy of doing so? if able, would she join other battle sisters in prayer or be kept seperate?

2. The whole self-flagellation stuff, in the big picture from GW, some of the stuff sticking into the Repentia is pretty horrific... Is the level of punishment determined by the weight of their failure, or purely self-inflicted? I ask because of the line in the codex about how some battle sisters want to join the Repentia. In minor cases such as these, would they only be slightly mutilated, or even not at all?

3. Are Repentia expected to kill themselves if they can't kill the enemy for whatever reason, or do they get a second 'chance' in the next battle?

Sorry if these seem a bit obscure!

Thanks in advance!

From what I've read, to include the James Swallow books, here's my $.02:

1. Yes, they still pray to the Emperor; but are are sequestered from the other Sisters

2. The punishment is being made a Repentia, or choosing to be one if they view their sin as being so sincere.  The sisters inflict further punishment based on their own sense of the sin.

3.  They remain Repentia until their death.

Some of those images are of penitent psykers and other inqusitorial victims followers ...

Saint Celestine was once a member of the Sister Repentia -- at least in the old fluff before her story was cut to a single paragraph in the WD codex.  But no, they do not kill themselves.  Only if the fall in battle do they fulfill their vow.  If they survive one battle they remain a Repentia and in the next.  Even Saint Celestine died in battle as a Repentia.  This is how she became a Living Saint after all.

Thanks for the responses guys! It is appreciated.

According to Swallow, it is possible to serve your sentence and pass out of the Repentia and back into the general battle order, but very rare to do so. Other than that, it's as Kabbala says.

Yes I thought I had read that somewhere... the Mistress can determine a Repentia's duty over with at the end of a battle.

I know right... that picture alone is the scariest depiction of the 40k universe I have ever seen.  The Repentia look like they have it bad but the Arco-flagellants are the worst.  I can't help but cringe at the thought...

Going back to point 2 then:

So it is possible for some Repentia to not be mutilated in any way?  What would happen in these cases?  Would the other Repentia look down on one of their number who hadn't harmed their bodies in any significant way.  Maybe they would be seen as less pious?

Thanks again for the info!

i suppose it would depend on the "crime" they committed to end up in the repentia, a sister who joined of her own will for some minor self perceived failure would probably not be expected to be as masochistic as a former canoness who was sentenced to the repentia after losing 3/4 of her warriors in battle due to poor tactical decisions and a lack of faith in the emperor

Prayer cleanses the soul, but pain cleanses the body.

So I reckon that both are required to absolve their sins.

Oh yes, there will be pain, but not necessarily mutilation. GW painted Repentia models have a few surface cuts and scratches and these are as likely to come from the Mistress’ whip as anything. Other than skin cuts or purity seals pinned to the skin, there is very little actual damage done. Were they to get simple first aid there would likely not even be a scar. The power axe that gives them release through absolution however would not be as easily healed. If she could be revived, a bionic limb or replacement optics would probably be her reminder of her time with the repentant.

I just love the repentia. I mean they are punished but still admired and equiped with eviscerators that are usually nothing less than relics.

It's not like they give every penal guardsman a master crafted boltgun while their old platoon mates go "now that guy is the coolest soldier ever".

Would they use bionics on repentia? I mean the whole idea was absolution through death, I thought.

I guess if you crippled yourself and somehow managed not to die one of 2 things could happen:

1) They'd leave you behind to die a sinner as an irredeemable failure, or

2) They'd elevate you back out of the repentia because clearly the God Emperor has plans for you

depending perhaps on what you managed to do during the battle.

It's absolution through sacrifice, rather than necessarily absolution through death, I think. Bionics are a lot cheaper and more common than bolters and power armour, so it stands to reason that a wounded but not dead Repentia would be glued back together and either sent back into the fray as repentia or deemed to have redeemed herself.
