Bran Redmaw Tactics Question

Recommended Posts

I'm in the process of building a Bran Redmaw army list and I wanted to check to see if some of the stuff i'm doing is legal per the rules.

For the group of Grey Hunters that gets Saga of the Hunter, I was planning on putting a Wolf Guard Pack Leader in Termy armour along with them. I've heard differing reports in whether or not a Wolf Guard Battle Leader can take Saga of the Hunter w/ Termy armour (I believe it saying he cannot take it if in Termy armour), but as far as I'm reading the rules this is not an issue, since the Saga is coming from Bran, which does not place the same restriction on it.

Also as I've almost never played with the Outflank rules before, I want to make sure that the Saga of the Hunter is just transferring the regular Outflank (coming in from the board edges) and not the Behind Enemy Lines the Wolf Scouts have.

Thanks in advance. I'll post the army list up later this weekend to get peoples thoughts, but I think it should be interesting as I'm trying to stay rather fluffy with it in making it an army that tends to round the enemy up and go in for the kill. (Plus lots of Wulfen Marks)

Bran doesn't "give" a Grey Hunter pack Saga of the Hunter. He has Saga of the Hunter, which affects him and his unit (possibly only of Fen.Wolves, check your local groups interpretation).

Bran can give one unit of Grey Hunters Outflank and Behind Enemy Lines, which would affect a Wolf Guard Pack Leader as he is a part of the unit in all respects.

Saga of the Hunter confers Outflank, but not Behind Enemy Lines. But see my above answer.

Ah okay, I see it now. So the Grey Hunters essentially have the same outflank / Behind enemy lines as if they were Wolf Scouts.

RAW would supposedly allow for a Termy Wolf Guard to join that, as the rules specifically state they can't join a wolf scout squad (but i'm guessing rules as intended would mean he shouldn't be able to Behind enemy lines the termy armour).

and Bran himself specifically gets regular outflank.

There is this FAQ :

"Q: Can a Wolf Guard Pack Leader or Independent Character join a squad of Wolf Scouts and benefit from the Outflank special rule because at least one model has the ability? (p27)

A: Yes.", C:SW FAQ

"Q: If so, do they roll to see where they enter play using the Wolf Scouts’ Behind Enemy Lines special rule or the normal Outflank special rule? (p27).

A: The normal Outflank special rule.", C:SW FAQ

Strictly speaking this is not RAW, but most groups will probably want you to use regular Outflank if the Grey Hunters have a WGPL.

Yea DS, that has nothing to do with what Bran confers upon a GH pack and joined WGPL. Some might try to coorelate, but I would simply say that it is a GH pack, not a Wolf Scout pack.

Agreed.  It just surprises me that anyone even accepts the FAQ for anything.

By RAW a Wolf Guard Pack Leader (and attached ICs, while attached) are counted as a part of the unit for all purposes, and should (despite the FAQ) benefit from the BEL rule (The "Wolf Scout pack" unit composition would be considered X Wolf Scouts, 1 WGPL, X ICs).  But GW isn't thinking clearly on this, or they would have errata'd the rule to not include a Wolf Scout unit which has a WGPL or IC.

I'm just trying to cover all the bases for the OP, as he might encounter a group which doesn't want him to use Bran to full effect.
