The Infernus Cult

so this is my idea for a band of space marines created for the sole purpose of combating the necrons, since i cant find any information on any imperial forces actively specialising in destroying them

THE INFERNUS CULT

Origins:

Prior to the raid on Sanctuary 101 in 897.M41 by the Adeptus Sororitas the ordo xenos realised that a new alien threat was present, one of which they had never had to face before.

After being sanctioned by the Adeptus Mechanicus and the high lords of terra a new chapter was to be created to deal with this unknown threat, this was done in secret so to hide this new threat from the citizens of the imperium, since the threat the necrons posed was believed to cause a panic if its details were revealed to the rest of the imperium.

When more information about the necrons came to light the chapter was seen as a neccesity, The Adeptus Mechanicus provided the chapter with advanced technology designed to work using psychic power, the ordo xenos deemed that the chapter would require the most advanced weapons and armour possible, since necron technology appeared to be highly advanced and incredibly dangerous

When the Chapter had reached full strength, something that was achieved remarkably quickly, it was deployed against the Tomb World Tartarus, the worlds population of necrons was depleted due to a tectonic shift under the tomb complex, leading to thousands of necrons being destroyed.

After a week the planet and its huge tomb complex was purged, the tomb itself being completely destroyed then being sealed under the rubble caused by a crashed thunderhawk, the chapters baptism of fire was complete, with few casulties. The Infernus Cult was born.

Homeworld:

The Infernus Cults homeworld was the moon of Tartarus, Gaia, its proximity to the tomb world making it a perfect place to monitor the chapters enemy, but just before the destruction of Tartarus's tomb complex the necrons attempted to destoy the chapter, purging the surface of gaia and destroying the newly built fortress monestary.

After Tartarus was purged of the necron threat the Infernus Cult chose to rebuild the fortress monestary on the great cliffs overlooking the ruins of the tomb complex, the chapter made the complex a training ground for their warriors, turning the fortress of their enemy into their most powerful fortress.

Tartarus is a feral world, covered in savage beasts and huge snow covered forests, the necron complex at the northern pole of the planet was located in a large valley surrounded by huge jagged cliffs, the northern pole is now the huge fortress monestary of the chapter, its main towered structure located on the very edge of the largest of the cliffs, overlooking the huge, walled training ground that was once the necron tomb complex.

Combat Doctrine:

The Infernus Cult uses a wide variety of tactics, they mainly employ defensive tactics, landing at one position and holding the position around it, thinning the numbers of their enemy.

Their most effective tactic is called the death line, the warriors form up ranks and hold the line around a single defensive position, as the necrons advance to attack the terminator armored forces of the infernus a single sniper of the dead shot kabal will move into a raised position and attempt to assassinate the necron lord, overlord or cryptek specified by the infernus cult captain or high lord.

The Infernus cult often employ the snipers of the dead shot kabal, a band of warriors loyal to the emperor, they work as assassins and are said to be as good snipers as the feared assassins used by the imperium, they work as a small detatchment of imperial guard snipers, and are said to be as lethal as any other temple assassin

Organisation:

The cult is organised completely differently to any other space marine chapter, the warrior brothers, effectively the body of the chapter, are all clad in terminator armour, weilding a inferno halaberd, prior to becoming a warrior brother each recruit spends 10 years as a cultist, a power armour clad warrior weilding twin infernus glaives and a personal teleporter, after reaching the rank of warrior brother a warrior can attempt to advance to infernus guard, then to an infernus captain then finally to high master of the chapter, after the previous master is killed or chooses to step down.

The Chapter consists completely of psykers and uses these warriors specifically to combat the non-psychic necrons.

Beliefs:

The Chapter holds the firm belief that all xenos pose a dire threat to the emperor, and the necrons pose the most direct threat, they serve themselves above all else but see that without the emperor they would not be, therefore see him as their father and closest ancestor, despite being derived from the gene seed of The primarch rogal dorn, they hold the emperor as their master, not the primarch they were created from.

The Chapter focuses on the psychic manipulation of fire, believing it is this fire that destroys the impure, i.e the xenos. They use the variant of the nemisis force weapon, the Infernus force weapon, a weapon designed to be used by Pyromancers, psykers who focus on the use of pyromancy.

BattleCry:

The Chapter has no battlecry, instead they stay silent in battle save for a single word uttered by high master Kronus when the final warrior of the enemy forces falls, "Ut accipiat te inferus" or "may the infernus take you"

Notable Battles

-Purge Of Tartarus- refered to as the 'Baptism of Fire' the chapter endured on the day of its completion

-Seige of Nanoggeddion- battle in which Lord Kronus assended to High master after he held back the necron forces of nanoggeddion for 3 months before being ordered by inquisitor Theodor Kote to abandon the seige on the tomb complex

-Destruction of Grantus- Planet transformed into daemon world during an attempt to destroy the necrons on the planet, abbadon the despoiler flooded the planet with daemons causing the planets pylons to overload, resulting in it being swallowed into the eye of terror, 200 marines lost during planetary transformation, fate unknown.

"The Necons...they are the true enemys of man, we are ordered to destroy a foe which cannot die, the inquisiton is foolish to believe we can, they hold the hope that we can stop them...the last hopes of desperate men who's god emperor has deserted them...i refuse to fight for such men" -  last vox communication of Infernus Captain Icarus, Believed to be seeking entrance into the necron tomb complex on nanoggeddion, fate unknown

So what do you guys think, sound good?

Far as I'm aware, there are no chapters founded to combat the Necrons. Because the last Founding, about three centuries ago, was before the Necron menace revealed itself.

A young Chapter re-defining itself to meet the Necron threat? Sure!

Created for that purpose? Impossible according to current fluff.

This feels kind of like you just copied the Grey Knights and replaced "daemons" with "Necrons".  Maybe that's what you meant to do.

As Cormac pointed out, having a new Chapter constructed by the Imperium to fight the Necrons like this would conflict with established fluff.  It also feels sort of repetitive to me.

This concept would give your Chapter more character -- its not just a plug-and-play Necron fighting force.  It is a unique Chapter that, of its own choice, decided to commit itself to fighting what it determined to be the most dangerous threat to the Imperium.

I like the little bit at the end there about the Infernus Captain who didn't believe the Necron threat could be stopped, only slowed down.  But I don't thik you need to rely on the Inquisition or anyone else.  Your guys can recognize the threat and -- although they believe deep down they cannot ultimately defeat it -- they nevertheless commit themselves whole-heartedly to fighting it and slowing down as much as they can.  Maybe they are trying to hold it off long enough for the Emperor to rise from the Golden Throne and defeat it himself.  Maybe they think they need to hold it off long enough for the rest of the Imperium to wake up to this massive threat and start committing more resources to fighting it.  Maybe they just hate the Necrons and want to destroy as many of them as they can, or maybe they believe they can find a weakness in the Necron.  There are lots of ways you can go.

I'd also suggest you rethink the "all psyker, all Terminator armor" composition of the Chapter.  An army of a thousand psykers in Terminator armor feels a little uber-powerful to me.

I like the sniper idea, but I don't know why you need to bring in snipers from outside the Chapter.  Just take the best snipers from your scouts.  Veteran sniper scouts that spend decades, even centuries, training and honing their skills could be some of the best sharpshooters in the galaxy.

Your "death line" concept could still work: a few squads of standard power-armored Marines form a type of phalanx or other defensive formation around a few snipers and a couple librarians.  The front-line Marines basically fight a war of attrition, holding off the attacking necrons as long as possible while the snipers and librarians try to take down the Necron leadership.

Right so this is my reworked idea for the chapter

Origins:
The Infernus cult was a chapter that sought out what they believed to be the gravest threats to the imperium, whether it be xenos or chaos, the chapter has done this since it first known battle, it is believed that the chapter fights with such determination and hunts the most dangerous threats to the imperium to prove its loyalty, since its founding is unknown, it is speculated to be the dark 13th founding.
The Chapter dissapeared for nearly a century during the 38th millenium and when it returned its numbers had been thinned to barely 300 marines, the ruins of its chapter being found stranded on a single space hulk floating near to Nanoggeddion.
After the chapter had reached its full strength once again its chapter master scoured the galaxy looking for something he described as 'the fallen civilisation', for nearly two centuries the chapter was forced by its chapter master to search for these people, just as the chapter began to doubt the mental stability of high master Azreall they found them, on the world known as tartarus the chapter came into contact with a force never seen before, the necrons.
The chapter just managed to destroy the tomb complex on tartarus, making the planet its home, but they kept the knowledge of the enemy hidden from the imperium, calling them 'a unique species of xenos lifeform', they did this because the chapter had nearly been destroyed by the same race before, according to what was left of the 300 'founding' marines, they had deemed this race to dangerous for the imperium to engage, for if it could nearly destroy an entire chapter with minimal casulties, what if whole worlds filled with these creatures openly engaged the imperium...

Homeworld:
After Tartarus was purged of the necron threat the Infernus Cult chose to rebuild their fortress monestary on the great cliffs overlooking the ruins of the tomb complex, the chapter made the complex a training ground for their warriors, turning the fortress of their enemy into their most powerful fortress.

The world itself is covered in small villages, the people within them living much more nomadic lives, they use little technology due to this, and have been known to refer to the infernus cult as 'the lords of the flame' due to the red shimmering armour they wear.

Combat docterine:
The Infernus cult often employ their own unique tactics, such as the death line. This is a line of warriors forming up within cover, they move vindicators into possitions blocking passages through buildings or ravines and open fire on the enemy as they advance, in most cases the infernus captain, or even the current high master of the chapter Kronus, will order the specially trained 'dead shots', veteran scout snipers who spend centuries perfecting their aim till they can take the eye of a canoptek scarab out during an ememies advance without spending more than 5 seconds aiming, decapitate the necron lord, overlord or cryptek leading the force.

Organisation:
The Chapter is organised into 10 hunting parties, each party contains 25 terminator armored warriors, 50 power armored warriors, 1 captain, a librarian, 3 vindicators, 10 jump pack-equipped marines and 10 snipers, making each party consist of 97 marines and 3 vindicators.
The only acceptions to this are the 1st, 9th and 10th party.
The 1st party is High lord Kronus's personal force, this consists of, 25 terminator armored marines, 40 power armored marines, High Lord Kronus, 5 jump pack-equipped marines, 5 snipers, 2 vindicators, 1 land raider, 1 stormtalon gunship, 2 whirlwinds and 18 specialist 'black company' marines, these specialist marines are trained to hunt and kill the silent king, there are only 20 in existance, the other 2 are currently pursuing the silent king and his warriors
The 9th and 10th parties are the scout parties, these parties are specifically used to train new neophytes for the chapter, they never fight as a partie rather they send out small groups along side other parties.

The Chapter focuses on combating the necrons because they believe them to be the most dire threat to the imperium, after the stories told by those few original members of the 300 'founding' marines and the records kept on the destruction of the chapters other 700 fallen warriors the new recruits to the chapter have the truth about the necrons revealed to them, they are unkillable, they cannot die no matter how much amunition you bury in them or how much you hack off, the infernus fight them because no one else will, they are one of the few chapters to have fully experianced the power of a necron tomb world at full strength and the chapter still bears the scars, they fight to attempt to hold back the tidal wave they know is coming, for when the necron dynasties awaken they will be the last defence, the chapter clings to the hope that the emperor will rise from the golden throne before this wave hits the imperium head on, for only he can save them then.

- 2nd Seige of Nanoggeddion- battle in which Lord Kronus assended to High master after he held back the necron forces of nanoggeddion for 3 months before being ordered by inquisitor Theodor Kote to abandon the seige on the tomb complex

This Sound better?

  • 3 weeks later...

The Chapter doesn't know when it was founded? That's a bit silly of them, forgetting that.

Organisation:

Unique organization is not a substitute for personality. Nor are lists of equipment. WHY is your chapter organized differently? That's what matters.

Three hundred actually seems like a lot of survivors from clearing a tomb complex. Also, why wouldn't the Chapter alert the larger Imperium to this horrific and terrible threat?

Also, how do they know the Dynasties are awakening, exactly? Necrons aren't that talkative.

The Chapter has no battlecry, instead they stay silent in battle save for a single word uttered by high master Kronus when the final warrior of the enemy forces falls, "Ut accipiat te inferus" or "may the infernus take you"

That's not a word. That's several words.

* * *

Not tons of personality here, and it's personality that makes things interesting. Explain some "whys" of the chapter - why don't they alert the Imperium? What steps do they take to stop the Necrons beyond just a slightly different organization? What has this done to their view of the Imperium and the universe? That sort of thing.
