April Mordrak FAQ

Q: If Grand Master Mordrak begins the game in Reserves embarked upon a Storm Raven Gunship or other flying Transport vehicle, does the Transport benefit from his 'First to the Fray' special rule? (p40)

A: No

Really GW?

/sigh

You elect to answer this *now*.  Not when you released the Codex and it was actually possible for Mordrak to deploy from reserves in a Storm Raven *by deep strike*.

But no, you wait until *after* you have removed the opton to enter play via Deep Strike from a Storm Raven to answer.

How much does this affect your Ghostwing list though? I thought the plan is;

Turn 1: Land Mordrak+pals+Libby lugging teleport homer

Turn 2: Cast 'Communion', Deepstrike stuff off the teleport homer in support

Turn 3: ???
Turn 4: ???
Turn 5: PROFIT!

That was the main thrust of the list, which worked well at the time.  However, it was never the only thrust of the list, as I've detailed in the past.  Depending on need, I was more the happy to split my units into Combat Squads ... or deploy by foot ... or out-flank ... or only reserve Mordrak's crew and a 10-man GKT back-up.

It's the last one that I've been using more often these days, since there are people out there that still deny a TDA's ability to start in reserves that bypasses the normal 50% limit.  I've also swapped out the 2nd GKT unit for GKSS and the Stormraven (pre-DS nerf), and still have a full 10-man unit of GKIS to swap in as needed.  Mordrak, his Ghosts, the Libby, and one 10-man GKT unit remain the core of my army, with the second 10-man GKT, 10-man GKSS, 10-GKIS, Stormraven, etc., as plug and play additions to keep the army from getting stale.  And yes, I still play the "all in" teleport rush tactic when I feel that strategy is favored.  My list has alway been intended for flexible play rather than being a one-trick pony.

But it doesn't bypass the 50% limit. You still need half your units starting on the field Turn 1.

"May always start in reserve, regardless of mission restrictions" does imply that the 50% in reserve max limit for missions is being bypassed via codex special rules trumping BRB general rules. To state otherwise is to ignore rules as written, or to impose "how you would play it".

Hmmm...like, I really want this to be the case, but I'm just so used to GW being retarded when it comes to rules conflicts. Have you done it recently in organised play without any problems? I play casually for the most part but people can be sticklers.

BRB - page 124- 'Preparing Reserves'

"Units that must (Emphasis mine) start the game in reserve are ignored for the purposes of working out how many other units may do so"

BRB FAQ - April 2013

"Do units that are transported in a vehicle that MUST start in

reserve count towards the number of units that can be placed in
Reserves? For example, must I count the units in a Drop Pod or
Valkyrie towards the 50% of units I can place in Reserves? (p124)
A: No.

As a result of the above, my group and I play it that things like Terminators can't be kept in reserve if it would mean they would make more than 50% of your army be in Reserve. They 'may' start in Reserve, even if the mission doesn't allow it. We see that as a mission specific thing in case the mission doesn't allow Reserves. However, the core rules surrounding the entire game (Not just the mission) specify that only units which MUST start in Reserve don't count to that limit. Conversely - if that unit of Terminators started in a Stormraven for example - they would be allowed to exceed the 50% limit.

This is how my group plays it and after a little discussion amongst a few of us - it was decided this was the correct way to do it. If anyone else can explain it to me otherwise though, I'd be more than happy to hear it :)

No, it does not work that way. For the reasons why, see any of the multi-page +OR+ threads on the subject.

I only remember this thread on it;

Edit: Not saying there aren't others! tongue.png

There was this one, also, recently : http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/275050-reserves-questions/

There were others, but I couldn't find them quickly.
