Help choosing a Legion...

I know this one comes up often, but I finally find myself in the position where I can splurge and finally start my HH army. I will, for the most part, at least at first, be playing against my buddy who has chosen the Space Wolves as his Legion. That brings me to my question, Which traitor Legion should I go with?

I've been scouring all the fluff for the Traitor Legions during the Heresy, and unfortunately I love them all! I suppose the fluffiest Legion for me to choose would be the Thousand Sons, but I've never really been a big fan of Egyptian themes and motifs. Other than that I'm stumped. During the Age of Darkness the Wolves could've fought against all the various traitor legions so anything goes really.

My favorites would probably be the Word Bearers, Sons of Horus, or the Alpha Legion.

What say you? Can you help little 'ol indecisive me?

Ok, so you want to start a traitor legion. To play mainly against Space Wolves?

In my experience it's best to go with an army you really really like or have a feeling for. As opposed to just for who your main opponent will be (fluff reasons why). You could always place space wolf bits on some of your bases to show they have been fighting them. Yes I'm sure you could justify a reason to have been fighting them!

The three favourites you have all are interesting. If you really want to start collecting now, obviously one of the current model ranges would be your pick, but later in the year there will be more options as the next book is released. Can you wait?! If not choose a legion now, you already know what to choose your figures from ;-)

Is there any playstyle that appeals to you more than others? So, long range shooty, fierce close combat, siege style, stealth infiltrators etc. Maybe that will help.

Also if you are really unsure, I ask myself this sometimes: Is there any absolutely awesome model that I would love to own, or build a force around?

So, does any new legion contemptor take your fancy? Any themed terminator/bodyguard squad? Any legion tank with army insignia?

Bah. The Word Bearers were better when they armoured themselves with faith in the God-Emperor. The original heraldry and Legion symbol was, by far, the best of any of the Legions...

Awesome. Nuff Said.

Well, how about this exercise. It will be similar to what cod_lover suggested.

Write a paragraph or list of everything you are looking for. Like certain aspects or feels. Types of tactics(although since this is the Heresy, tactics sort of take a backseat since virtually every Legion had reserve Companies with specialized jobs. Even the World Eaters had artillery units after all.), unit formations, things like that. And then write down something similar for what you know about every Legion. Focus on the details that fit into the categories you are looking for. Then just go through, see which one fits more into the profile you have. If you want, you can post it here and share it, someone might know a small, out-of-the-way piece of fluff or maybe just has access to a more well-known piece of fluff that you may not have access to and we can provide the missing details. You don't have to share it, just a possibility to help you in your journey. But like I said, make a profile and then see which one fits the most. If the one that fits still doesn't strike your fancy, reexamine your profile. See if there is anything you missed and then try again. If you hit the same Legion but still don't necessarily like it more than others, check out the runner up. So if it seems to strike a bigger chord than the first one.

Repeat after me, Kol. Decaff is good... :P

Back on topic: Really, it comes down to passion. To build an entire army of any Legion is dedication of the highest sort, something you must see to the end. Find that one Legion that speaks to who you are as a person, and go with your heart. You won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the help guys! Kol, I did just that! It was actually a lot easier than I thought, I've had ideas in the back of my head since certain kits were released, along with a certain novel...

I'm going to be spreading the Imperial Truth, pre-Monarchia style with the Word Bearers! There were a lot of factors involved in the decision, and Heathens is totally right, they have a killer color scheme pre-heresy. The fact that FW will be releasing the Word Bearers stuff along with "Massacre" (hopefully), sweetened the deal. That and I was looking for an excuse to use mainly MK II armor. Looks like it's time to re-read The First Heretic.

Any suggestions army-wise? Chaplains seem a shoe-in obviously, but anybody have any cool ideas list/modeling wise? I'm thinking Grey Knight shoulder pads with the swords removed and the flame sculpted could work until FW releases their stuff. What say you?

Well First Heretic I seem to remember some jetbikes saw I think we saw an assault company. According to the IA article, every world they fought on was pretty much razed to the ground so either a heavy hitting infantry force(probably a shooty one or maybe an assault with Outriders and Destroyers) or big gun mechanized. Could be something like Spartans and armed APCs and such. Or perhaps an artillery regiment as even the World Eaters had those. To be honest, there is a lot of variety with Legion-era army lists with everything being a preference rathe than some sort of restriction.

Kill it with sword and fire; the steel of faith and the heat of the zealot's heart. Spread the Word, the Imperial Truth, the love that the God-Emperor freely gives to those who embrace him, and the rage of his divine disappointment to those who do not. As your plate is of chisled granite, so make your heart to the unbeliever. Protect the weak with the grey of the angels wing, annihilate the godless heathen who refuses to face the Truth. Turn his gaze with your own as you plunge that Truth into his heart, so that at the end, he may see his folly, and the damnation that follows!

Ahem. Yeah, close combat would be best.

Yes. Take advice from the Night Lord. That'll work out well.

OP says his favorite Legions are the Sons of Horus (Arch Traitors!) Word Bearers (Even ARCHER Traitors!) and the Alpha Legion (Traitors who betrayed even the Arch Traitors except they were traitors to my head hurts now. Gonna lie down.)

I don't think he's in a position to sneer at suggestions from a son of Curze.

Hey Kol you used the idea of what my WEs are trying to be like lol what a coincident. I have my dual kheresnaught named juljak nul from betrayal and a MoS who is being trained by him fluff wise. I also have new and old champions vying for the heart of my Echelon :)

Go Sons of Horus of course. Then tell you friends the Space Wolves named themselves that way because they were amazed by the Luna Wolves. In the end, the LW decided they were too cool to lead the hipster bandwagon "wolves" thingy and became the Sons of Horus.

No matter what happens on tabletop, you've already won. :p

On a serious note, the Sons' main color is quite a nightmare to get. If you consider yourself able to master that baby out, that'll look awesome, but it's really challenging.

That is kind of cool. Guess great minds think alike. lol

Where is that quote from?!

I made it up as I typed. Probably should've become a preacher, but I have a bad habit of swearing. A lot. Usually in public. Loudly.

Smoking, drinking, and throwing myself out of perfectly good aircraft at 1000 ft to engage the enemies of my nation with fury and discipline may play a factor too.
