Tactical List Building Assistance

Wolf-Brothers,

So I am in a dilemma of list building at the moment.

I've settled on a core right now of 3 Rhino mounted Grey Hunter Packs equipped as follows:

Maxed, Wolf Standard, Power Axe, 2 Plasma Guns

in addition to this I intend to run a Runic armor, bike mounted RP (going divination for prescience)

Also at my core are two predators and a vindicator (or HB armed Predator Executioner)

What I want to add to the list is as follows:

Anti-flyer defense (if applicable)

Dedicated assault unit, preferably with HQ

Mobile reserve of bikers serving as counter-assault/anti tank (Swiftclaws currently, however in the AT role they're a bit light imo)

Could you give any suggestions of unit profiles or units to use from our battle brethren codexes?

Swiftclaws aren't bad anti tank at all, however, personally I'd lean towards meta bombs over melts guns. Are you giving them the bombs? With multi assault (and being able to target rear armour), they can actually take out more than one tank in a single assault (if there is a squadron of leman russes, for example) Their forte is being very tough round 1 with a 4+ jink turbocharge, and being extremely hard hitting on the charge on turn 2 (but they're vulnerable to being charged themselves or locked in combat). That said, you definitely should always take an attack bike because it's so cheap.

Really, swiftclaws cover assault and anti tank fairly well. And with a rune priest they're fantastic. Enfeeblement causes regular marines to wound them on 6s, ouch!

For dedicated assault unit you could try either a ThunderWolf Pack or a Wolf Guard pack in TDA. You might want to put the Wolf Guard in a Drop Pod or some version of a LR for mobility. For that reason & simply because I like them, I prefer Thunder Wolves. You can give both an HQ though you have more flexibility in that regard with Wolf Guard. For Anti Air, seing as your HS is full, I suggest  an Defence line with a quad gun or perhaps even a bastion with the quad gun. Put it around/near an objective with a Gray Hunter pack & have fun. My 2 cents anyways.

It looks like the good basis for a decent list.

If you wanted to ally in some units to fulfil the criteria you have set out, how about a Storm Raven with thunderhammer/stormshield terminators?

Anti air, dedicated close combat and the unit is resilient to the unfortunate air crash territory if you happen to get downed before you can deploy the terminators.

As I am sure you have read, SW have crap for flyer defense. So with a full HS, its an ADL with a lone wolf on the gun, or allies IMO. LFs with prescience can do well vs a single flyer, but anymore (especially helldrakes) and they just cant throw enough dice. I have considered rifledreds, but 4 TL shots doesn't seem like enough without the reliability of the quadgun. I have tried using GH in razorbacks with both ass cans and las, but they never seem to do much. My dedicated assault unit is TWC with a lord. They rip face on the regular and look so cool while doing it.

For what your looking for, I would take BA allies and have either DC with an HQ or assault squad with HQ and a Stormraven. Put a Librarian in there for another source of Prescience.

Or

A vanilla chapter with a captain on a bike and a full bike squad with him and a Stormraven. You could even put the RP with this unit so the sergeant and captain can soak challenges and the RP can hand out Prescience to who needs it most due to the high mobility. Or have side by side bike squads counterassaulting for one another.

I have had a crimson fist bike squad and captain tear through a full squad of boyz (I got the charge) then precede to put down a Battlewagon while the Captain detatched and took down the big mek with custom forcefield. The bike squad bit it from massed loota fire, but the captain lived till the end netting a total of 4 VP for him and his unit. Sorry for the rant, but that was one of my fav 40k moments.

They are mobile, versatile, and decently tough on all counts except the assault squad which only fits the first two.
