Grey hunters and power weapons in the pack

Recommended Posts

Basically, does it make sense to have one of yuor GH's have a power axe/sword/fist, even if you will have a WG attached ot th epack with a power weapon as well?

Does it make sense to spend the extra points to have two power weapons in a pack between the one GH and the WG attached to it?

What has been your experience, as I am looking at going with the typical:

1. MOTW

2. Company Std.

3. Melta / Plasma

4. Power axe/sword/fist

5.Bolter, BP, CCW

6.Bolter, BP, CCW

7.Bolter, BP, CCW

8.Bolter, BP, CCW

Also, do you think it is okay to have a 9 man strong squad, or would you go for the 8 man strong squad? (Figure that the WG would be #9 or #10 respectively for transport sake)

Yep. I'd say a wolf standard is more important than a hidden power axe, so if you're trying to save points, keep the standard. MOTW and power axes are very close. Personally, I rate the MOTW a tad higher. It's not quite as good vs. 2+ saves but it's at initiative, which is a big deal. And it's actually more killy vs light infantry than an axe.

Power axe in the GH pack is a hidden ap2 power weapon that is getting the dual ccw bonus with just a pistol. It really doesn't matter much as far as initiative as you can keep him somewhat tucked away so he will get his hits in. Plus, str6 is handy for other things besides infantry.

personally i usually just save the points by just having a wulfen in there instead, however if i have a more CC orientated squad (say a squad led by a wolf priest) id throw the extra power weapon in there (and cos i dont like having all my grey hunter units exactly the same ha)

my preference tends to go:

special weapon

wulfen

power weapon

Yeah, the (str 5, not 6) ap2 weapon certainly does kill more termies than MOTW. We're talking 5.5*(1/2)*((2/6)*(1/6)+(1/6)*(2/3))=11/24 kills on average for the MOTW, and 3*(1/2)*(2/3)*(2/3)=2/3 or 16/24 kills on average for the power axe. That's on the charge, vs 2+/5++. Losing the bonus attack and higher invulnerable saves close that gap (or even reverse it).

Vs MEQ, it's 5.5*(1/2)*((2/6)*(1/3)+(1/6)*(1))=55/72 for the MEQ, and 3*(1/2)*(2/3)*(1)=1 for the axe. So the axe wins there, too.

Still, I really wouldn't write off @init. Even if your axe user is at no risk of dying, they can still prevent te deaths of their fellow grey hunters. Each hammernator killed at init 4 is a marine saved at init 1, roughly on average.
