Conversions of the New Dark Vengance set

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Me and my sons have just started playing 40k. I played a couple years ago, a handful of times with a buddies models but there is much i dont know. I've searched a couple different forums and tried to find some tutorials on walkthroughs but i couldnt find anything too useful. Anyway we purchased the new Dark Vengance set (which is about 800 points of dark angels and choas marines), i dont have the cash to purchase three seperate armies and it seems a 1000pt army is the minimum most people play at gaming shops so what we were wondering is if we can convert the dark angels into more chaos (or vice versa) to make one larger army. We figured most of them could be except maybe the IC's and the ravenwing bike squadron, and the krohne dreadnaught? (as I couldnt find any comprable forces). We havent painted any yet and I have seen where people have made thier own chapters of certain armies.

We would like to keep it as close to the rules as possible, so that maybe they can be used in tournaments later. We were trying to avoid proxying too many things also. I havent purchased the full codexs yet for either armies as we were waiting to see if we could go one way or the other and therefore only have to pick up one codex. Any help is grealty appreciated that includes links to a good explaination of how conversions work and if GW reconizes them for official tournaments.

----First Post WHOOOO!

You can field all of the models in a Chaos Space Marine Force. The Hellbrute, Chosen, and Cultists can be used as is. The Dark Angels can be used as follows:

Captain: Chaos Lord

Librarian: Chaos Sorcerer

Deathwing Terminators: Chaos Terminators

Tactical Squad: Chaos Space Marines (You won't be able to use the Plasma Cannon, though)

Ravenwing Bikers: Chaos Bikers.

Conversions in this case are what we refer to as "Counts-as". You don't have to convert anything. A conversion is when you make some sort of physical change to the structure of the base model. A lot of times, the only way to get a particular wargear set onto a model is to convert it. In this case, you can paint them all with the same color scheme and you will be good to go. As a matter of fact, you could run them as the Fallen (original Dark Angels that have fallen to Chaos).

By the way, Welcome to the B&C! Enjoy your stay!

Hello and welcome to the forums,

I would definitely imagine that you could convert the DV set to make more chaos marines (converting marines into Dark Angels would probably be significantly harder because the resin kits look so evil). Just dirty up the models some (or heck, run them as Fallen Dark Angels). Another option would be to buy a few upgrade sprues from a bits store online from the chaos kits or buy a few chaos boxes and glue on the evil doodads and such on the Dark Angels models. File off or exacto knife off the dark angel symbols as best you can (since they are chaos, don't worry if they look all scratched up).

As far as the rules go, as long as they relatively look like what they are supposed to be (since they are both marine forces, this shouldn't be an issue at all) and have the proper weapon options, you should have no problem running conversions in tournaments.

EDIT: Peredyne's post came simultaneously to mine, so I apologize for the repeated information (His post is better too teehee.gif ).

As a matter of fact, you could run them as the Fallen (original Dark Angels that have fallen to Chaos).

You could also paint the Dark Angels in DA colors but put tiny hydras on them somewhere. No one expects the Inquisition Alpha Legion! msn-wink.gif

If the backpacks are separate pieces, buy a few extra, magnetize them and put the hydra on only one of the two per model.

I'm not sure, but I think the all the Fallen should wear black armor, not just their Fast Attack squads. I think the green armor for the rank and file came after the split. Then of course renegades and traitors can wear whatever they like.

Welcome!

To echo the previous posts you can use them all as Chaos. If you wanted to make them a unified force this would be your best option, because Hellbrutes don't really scream loyalist to most people! Haha!

I think so long as you keep the colour scheme the same across all the models you will be fine!

I don't think that is even necessary. There are precedents for different colors for different units among the loyalists (BA: Death Company, Sanguinary Guard; DA:rank and file, Deathwing, Ravenwing) as well as traitors (Cult Troops).

Using the same colors but in different composition might be an interesting idea though e.g. main color A and trim B on the DA models and main color B and trim A on the CSM.

I was just saying that because the models will look different, so unified colours will help tie them all together. I mean all of your examples revolve around similar looking models with different colours, we are talking about two distinct sets of models working in the same force so a unified colour will help the opponent over-look the distinct difference in the models appearance and will help avoid any confusion. Naturally you can paint them however you like and do whatever you want with them, I personally just think this is a good way to avoid conversion work all-together.

I've not seen the models, but looking at a few sprue photos online, wouldn't it be possible to swap some parts around? Like, put Chaos backpacks onto Dark Angels marines and vice-versa, swap some arms or heads, etc. That should fairly quickly make the Dark Angels models look much more Chaos-like, especially if you paint all the models in the same scheme as has already been suggested.

Hey guys thanks for all the help. Looks like we are gonna go with a fallen angel chapter. Looking at some fluff online it seems the two main color schemes would be black or green. Im thinking black as the base with red trim. I like the backpack idea to show a mix and eventually ill grab some extra bits...i just wont glue anything on yet. For robes i'm thinking a desert tan color.

We are also considering coloring the shoulder insignia silver then scratching the shoulder isignia up with a file and painting the gashes with either black or a rusty looking color. To make it look like the isignia has been disgraced and scratched out. Not sure how well that would look or if it would damage the models too much.

Gonna do the bikes last cause im not sure what to do about them.

SO basically i guess we are shooting for a half army of fallen dark angels backed up by CSM's. Next step would be to pick up a Chaos codex so i dont equip them with weapons like the plasma thingy (lol im working on it) they aint allowed to have. Anyone know if you can get them second hand or a temporory pdf copy till i can get together the 70 bucks for a hardcover one?

You're unlikely to get them second hand or PDF legitimately, but that's a discussion for a different board. The only weapon that Chaos can't use in the DV set is the Plasma Cannon. The assault cannon carried by the DV trmie can be used as a reaper autocannon.

If you are handy with a dremel, converting the Dark angels to Chaos isn't so hard.  Here are my Fallen angels and Word bearers terminators all from the Dark Vengeance box:
