Tournament Question

Brothers and Sisters,

At the end of the month I'm going to play in a tournament at my FLGS. As with most tournaments it has that one odd twist that makes you say, "WHAT??"

In this tourney you have to have three separate 1,000 pt lists. Each game you play, you choose 2 of lists to combine and be your 2,000 pts of force for that game. At the next game you can change.

A fairly cool concept, yet hard to prepare for. I was wondering if any of you had played a tourney like this and had any advice to share.

The local meta is lots of GK and Cron Air, one Ork player who brings it and some SM and IG players.

Thanks.

For Russ!

I would look at creating the lists as follows;

Prime list

Support list

Support list

Tailor your support lists with a very cheap HQ and then tailored to whatever you might see across from you on the table.  So one support list might be for horde and one list might be for armor.

Forgive me - I've not seen an Ork army since what would have been 2nd edition (I took a sabatical from WH)

Your opponents are going to be:

IG - generally lots of low armour infantry, and lots of heavy armour.

Necron - lots of infantry that just wont stay down, and some heavy armour.

Orks - lots and lots of low armour infantry.

GK - heavy infantry, but few of them due to cost.

So I'd be looking at:

1 list for (majority) light troops

1 list for (majority) heavy troops

1 list for armour

Well, first off, Basic questions that are relevant to all tournaments;

-Fortifications Y/N?

-Allied Detachments Y/N?

-Forgeworld Y/N?

-Any other modifications we should know about?

First thing that comes to mind is that the tournament allows you all the cheese of the Double force org chart, with the added benefit of being able to tailor your list. A quick question though; Do you have to have all 3000 points, or if there's some overlap and everything's still WYSIWYG, can there be some overlap between the three lists (For instance, if all 3 lists pack 3 vindicators, do you need six vindicators, or nine?)

Fortifications are a yes, Allies are a yes. FW is a no. The only other mod is the store has pre-picked missions for each round (but players don't know what they are till you get to the table and after you pick your forces) and the store gets to place objective markers.

You do have to have all 3000 pts so using your example I would need 9 vindicators. (I think this is because the top 2 finishers will have a 3000 pt battle royal at the end for some cool prize). Every thing is WYSIWYG.

Last each list must be stand-alone if that makes sense. For example you can't have one list be 999 pts and another be 1001 and the third be 1000. No points sharing between lists I guess is a good way to put it.

Alright, so, then next set of questions;

-What's your collection like at the moment, and how much can you afford to expand it with specific things prior to the tournament? Be warned that the most competitive builds are likely going to require you to have more copies of certain models than you'd ever have a use for outside of Apoc.

-Do all three lists have to be of the same army? For instance, instead of an allied detachment from another army you own, could you just have two different 1000 point armies? (Granted, I'm mostly thinking Guard allies, and with Guard, you can make your primary detachment look like the Allied detachment of the army pretty easily). And if using two different codexes is allowed, do you use the allies matrix for determining how they interact?

Also... How competitive and expansive are people's collections in your meta (I.E. , is the local 'crons player going to be running 6 Annihilation Barges every game).

Build-wise, what came to my mind was an extensive Mechanized army, using the double force org chart to get numerous vindicators and still have long-range anti-tank or Cover-busting.

Something like

List 1: [stuff]

3 Vindicators -445 points

List 2: [stuff]

Vindicator -115 points

2 packs 6 Long Fangs with Missile Launchers -280 points

List 3: [stuff]

Vindicator

2 Whirlwinds
