Xenos inquisitor

The conversion beamer is one of those weapons that sound great but in practice really isn't. at >42", there are too many things that can block LoS to make it really effective, not to mention that range only really works turn 1 or 2. As the game goes on, there are going to be more and more things that can block LoS (assuming you're not going against a pure gunline), making the effect range shorter. Unfortunately, a S8 blast isn't really great unless it has some kind or re-roll and that involves either another psyker (w/ prescience) hanging out with him for that or spending an additional 30 points to make him a psyker to grant the re-roll. At that point, you might as well go for am OMI w/ psycannon for more reliable firepower.

Why have strikes as a long range shooting unit?

If you want a Scoring unit with an Inquisitor, and long range shooting, take Coteaz and 3 Plasma Cannon Servitors.

Coteaz is a straigt swap point wise for the 5 Strikes, and you're left with change after the Servitors.

The strikes are my home objective holders so I was looking at something to join them and give a bit of a boost to them

In general I see "home objective holders" to be too much wasted potential; in order to win a match, you need only hold one more objective than your opponent (well, except for that new "some objectives are worth more points than others" mode, but still) and leaving a unit "back at home" is a lot of wasted fire power. That's not as big an issue with GK since Storm Bolters and Psycannons all engage at half-the-table's width, but still something to keep in mind.

This is a tactical aside, I realize; but something I think on often with my primary army (which engages most effectively at rapid-fire range).

I don't really see strikes as good backfield objective holders. There are a lot of armies that are perfectly content to blast you away outside of 24", making strikes guns useless. IMO, they're just too expensive to sit back and hope the enemy moves within 24" of you. This probably comes down to play style though. I prefer a more aggressive approach, and take the fight to midfield where I can comfortably hit almost anything on the board (except for hammer and anvil). I even place objectives aggressively, more often placing most of mine midfield where I can both hold it down and fire at my opponents army.

Once again, if your Strikes do anything as a home objective holder, they only have 24" range.

In which case an OMI in TDA with a Psycannon has the same range as them.

Personally, I'd ally in some SM scouts for home objective holders.

Unless you're facing Helldrakes. And who doesn't have a Helldrake these days... furious.gif

I use a xeno/inq with plas servitors backing up my draigowing. 2x dreads for objective holding or fire support and strikes for mid field attack/ pulling back to hold my side if needed. I've found he depends on the other parts of your list to make him effective. Every1 runs from draigo and the beamer picks 'em off. Servitors are ablative and provide plenty of pie plates to deal with termies if needed. So far i've killed a foot tyrant and baal predator first turn with my beamer out of the 2 games i've played.
Id like to but i struggle for points, would help wiv gets hot rolls lol. Just have a go with proxy and see how you feel about it. My list has been tweeked quite a lot but has the same core of draigo and dreads. From a competitive standpoint its subpar yet i beat/table nearly everylist i fight (played about 8 games so far in my local gw). I found i needed long ranged punch and wanted to use a pie plate, so far i'm happy with it and if not... I use strikes to represent them anyway, no biggie.
