Vivster
Dear All,I have finally decided to go with Grey Knights after spending many months deciding what army I want to play...I have decided to do GK since their models look really cool compared to the vanilla marines I used to play.I have noticed that the meta has changed greatly in 6th ed and that GK are not as strong as they used to be.What should I buy to build my army? My usual opponents will be Tau or a power-gaming CSM player who we are sure cheats some how :PI will also be playing games in my Local GW.I think a safe bet would be to get:Strike squadsTerminators/ PaladinsCoteazDraigo/ Grand Master + Ghost KnightsDreadnoughtsDreadknightsand definitely a Stormraven for anti-air.I dont want to really be playing any of those warrior acolyte army lists since I would actually like to field a majority of GK.I also understand allies would be fundamental and am waiting on the new eldar codex or the space marine codex to come out later this month. What would be a good army list to start with the models above that I can building upon to higher points costs? Thanks :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/275347-new-to-grey-knights-please-help/ Share on other sites
Berle
Hi there, If you want to go for a primary force of Grey Knights and not Henchmen, then why take Coteaz? Instead decide if you want a list focused on a Grey Knight theme or want a power army? The latter requires Coteaz. In my experience Strike Squads with 2xPsycannon and Psybolt ammo is a great shooting unit for its points and i always field two of them as the backbone of my lists. They are used to capture home objectives and make local killzones in the middel of the board. Other than that i field Purifiers in a Stormraven as a anti flier unit with the ability to drop a counter-assault unit in the 3rd turn (provided the raven comes in turn 2) I also tend to field a Grand Master along with a unit of Terminators on the board to use Psyhic Communion and walk op the board to threaten the enemy objectives. And when it comes to Heavy Support you can never to wrong with Dreadknights with Heavy Incinerator, Teleporter and Greatsword. And the psyrifle man dread (2x Autocannon with psyammo) is also a great unit for long range support, but they lost some of their power in 6th due to Hullpoints. All in all i would really consider if you want to run a power-list, because that is still possible with Grey Knights or just run a fun list with a Grey Knight theme. Btw English isnt my native language so please disregard any errors. Kodiak599
I run 2 pure GK armies. 1 has 3 small strike squads in Bolterbacks (razorbacks w/ heavy bolters and psybolt ammo) 2 stormravens kitted to the teeth, and 3 psyfleman. Another list is 2 10 man strikes, 2 bolterbacks, 10 termies, 1 raven with ap 1 and 2 weapons, and 2 dreadknights. The first list works extremely well. Have beaten ALMOST everyone I play against (Except CAG, another user here) The second list I haven't gotten to try yet, but it has great potential. Got the idea off of another user here (can't remember their name off hand) and modified it a little bit. Reclusiarch Darius
I have noticed that the meta has changed greatly in 6th ed and that GK are not as strong as they used to be. Not really man. Its more that Tau are back in the 'we win if you don't stop us shooting' chair, and the shift towards more infantry favours Orks and IG a lot (as thats always been their core strengths anyway). Knights can still cause plenty of problems to other armies, and we're still the noob-gate. What should I buy to build my army? My usual opponents will be Tau or a power-gaming CSM player who we are sure cheats some how CSM are shenanigans by default, don't be surprised if he hits hard with insane abilities. Read the Heldrake unit entry and cry. Then read the FAQ for it and cry some more. Strike squadsTerminators/ Paladins Coteaz Draigo/ Grand Master + Ghost Knights Dreadnoughts Dreadknights and definitely a Stormraven for anti-air. Strikes are in trouble I feel. Tau will blow them away with little effort in firefights, and CSM have both melee and Heldrakes to kill them with. Terminators are a solid choice, although Riptides are going to cause problems if you don't watch your spacing. Coteaz was an auto-include last edition, he's even more of one in 6th due to Divination. Draigo is catered towards a specific army build. He's a sexy beast, but very expensive and basically is taken just for PallyStar. Grandmasters is a solid choice, although you may not always have the points for him. PsyDreads are still very good, especially in an anti-air role. They've taken a hit to survivability, like all vehicles, so don't be surprised if you lose them early. I've switch to DK's myself, but they're still a good general-purpose choice. DK's are solid gold, even against Tau. I'd really recommend bringing a Grandmaster for 'Outflank' though, so you can bypass their gunline and wreak havok in their backfield. If you can squeeze in heavy incinerators onto them, even better, Tau infantry hate heavy incinerators. You'll easily mop the floor with most CSM stuff too, barring their Prince or plasma gun spam nailing you. Ravens are not as good a choice as Vendettas. You'd wanna have a unit to carry with them, otherwise they're an overpriced gunship for the most part. Purifiers and melee warbands are top choices, although Paladins can be good too. I dont want to really be playing any of those warrior acolyte army lists since I would actually like to field a majority of GK. Fair enough. Henchmen are a fantastic unit though, so if you ever change your mind, they're always a top choice. I also understand allies would be fundamental and am waiting on the new eldar codex or the space marine codex to come out later this month. Eldar and Space Marines do nothing for Knights we can't already get. IG, Tau and even Orks/Crons are our top Ally picks. IG probably is #1. If you want to go for a primary force of Grey Knights and not Henchmen, then why take Coteaz? Instead decide if you want a list focused on a Grey Knight theme or want a power army? The latter requires Coteaz. - Mastery Level 2 Divination psyker - Henchmen Troops - nemesis hammer, 2+ armour, he's a challenge god - takes up only one transport slot, can embark on any transport (almost all Knight HQ's are in TDA, by way of comparison) - Supports both ranged and melee units, its really up to you where to attach him - 'IBEY' is Interceptor on crack - 'Spy Network' is free and will screw up 'Seize' attempts, even if they're on a 4+, plus it occasionally lets you 'Seize' - He's the price of a Strike squad, for all that There isn't a HQ better in the game. Even Eldrad costs more and does less. You'd be mad not to take him in any list.
