Loyalist World Eaters, 30k or Dornian Heresy

Hey all, been lurking for quite a while and finally decided to start posting my World Eaters army. Not going to lie: this army was 100% inspired by the Dornian Heresy book B&C put out (I've always believed Angron and his sons got one of the worst deals of any of the Legions). I also decided on these guys to push myself as a hobbyist; green stuff, painting techniques, kit bashing, etc etc... I'm working to improve in all areas so please bear with me.

With that I'll start with my Techmarine, I've broken down most of the modeling steps, and while the power weapon is trash, it was also my first attempt at scratching something with green stuff, I'll get to replacing it eventually.

Making the other parts

Continuing on, its important to note that you can recycle just about all the parts, the old backpack vents make nice joints once trimmed, etc. I had a lot of chainswords left over from my assault marines, but they come later.wink.png

Moving right along

Took a stock assault marine arm and worked two holes from either side in with a hobby knife, then set the hilt and wire in. I salvaged the wires from an old garage door opener.

Once again my mediocre power weapon,

http://imageshack.us/a/img507/8475/20130319194447939.jpg

That was basically it as far as assembly goes. I ended up pretty satisfied with his overall look and plan to make use him with either full or partial servo harness. I've never liked the idea or look of the servo arms themselves. I'm an engineer by trade and there is no way those things would be practical, since all of the weight these "super powerful" robot limbs try to move is going straight to the marines back and whatever joints attach it to the rest of the armor. Basically my Techie has a plasma cutter and a giant arc welder, any lifting he needs done will have to come from some servitors (as it should! devil.gif ). I figure the wires can double as mechadendrites or power supply's to the weapons.

On to the painting, not much actual work here, about the only thing that changed was putting a nice Devlan Mud wash on him to bring out the details.

The damn arc welder popped off...

Paint didn't really improve the axe... pinch.gif

Getting a hand from his bro's so the plasma cutter will set properly XD

Started on the chaplain last night and worked a little this moring, I am never getting a model with so much parchment again.

In keeping with the Dornian Heresy, this will be a Word Bearer attached to the 8th Assault Company as part of his missionary period.

Chaplain Zareel: Attached to the 8th since 944 M41 when the World Eaters came to the aid of a small Word Bearers Garrison defending a Shrine to Saint Bartus from the Black Legion. Zareel was a junior Chaplain finishing his training at the time. Despite inital success at their arrival traitor renforcements soon arrived by foul sorcery and began pushing the combined forces back. The 8th's own Chaplain, Dran, fell defending a breach from Terminator Assault. When the situation became truly dire Captain Skarl asked that Zareel address the World Eaters while his Mentor tended to their own flock. Zareel rose to the occasion such that the marines strode to battle with a renewed zeal and righteous fury allowing them to hold another 4 days until a Night Lords task force was able to land in secret and ambush the Traitor's rear, destroying them utterly. Skarl was so impressed that he appealed to the Legion Master of the Word Bearers to allow Zareel to remain with the 8th as a symbol of brotherhood and blood spilled together.

Overall I have been very disappointed with Finecast, yeah metal models were their own pain, but his damn crozius had a flaw in the hilt and snapped off when I first got it out of the box, I patched it with glue and green stuff as you can see below, but it broke again when I dropped him... wallbash.gif

Here are some pics of the Captain I put together, Originally I tried to use the shoulder pad that had a raised circle and scrollwork below it by painting the chapter badge on the circle and putting his name on the scroll, but it ended up looking like crap so I decided to go bigger, working the whole pad into the symbol. I'm actually pretty pleased with the results.

I decided to keep the full helmet shape, minus all the rivets and edging. I experimented with trimming the shape down with the helmets that were going on the assault squad, but the cleaned original looked best.

Command since 905 M41 at the Siege of Lucia Prime. During a drop pod assault on the Ork Warboss's location the Command Squad and Captain Meritas were slain as they disembarked by a Squiggioth Cannon. Veteran Sergeant Skarl led his squad to the crater; recovered the tattered remains of the colors and led the assault, slaying the Warboss in single combat.

A pretty good start so far.

It might be that the lighting on the photos isn't helping but it looks like some of the areas could do with a wash to bring out the details, especially on the metals. As for the axe, your best bet would be to make it out of plasticard if you have any, if not drawing the design out on an old CD case or stiff plastic packaging(the kind you get electronic bits in that takes seven years to finally cut your way into) should do the trick and then if you need to you can always pad that out with greenstuff but it'll be a lot easier to get it looking flat and sharp if you've got a pattern to work on top of.

Edit: Just spotted that you mentioned you'd used a Devlan Mud wash, so probably is just the lighting then, ignore me.

  • 2 weeks later...

And back with Chaplain Zareel painted and ready to spread the Word of the Emperor's Glory.

Close up from when I finished his skull front, I started with a basecoat of ceramite white, heavily inked it with a light tan, then did a light wash with White Scar white to give it that sort of yellowed old look. The pictures make it look lighter than it is.

http://imageshack.us/a/img22/9690/img20130528241228980.jpg

And assembled, this was my first time doing highlights on armor sections, I used astronomicon grey, and while I like the look it took forever. I'll probably only do it for character models and such.

http://imageshack.us/a/img96/7165/img20130529100333657.jpg

This shoulder was pretty rough, I'm glad I decided on World Eaters, because trying to mass produce this book and flame icon would be terrible. As it is its not great but it will have to do.

http://imageshack.us/a/img189/193/img20130529100405542.jpg

And that's it for him I'm moving on to converting an old Dreadnought from Grey Knights to World Eaters, then its tactical marines, tactical marines, tactical marines.

C&C appreciated.

  • 3 months later...

Whew, 3 months sailing is really not fun, especially when you can't do any model work besides sprue cleaning! But now I'm home and tearing back into the hobby. Here's the converted venerable dread, I cant take credit for anything on this model but the blue and white paint since it was a gift.

Next is the SGT for my first Tactical Squad,

And the Back

When all else fails try a knife to their face! XD

Next up are some scouts I got. I've decided that these Marines are going to be in a hazardous environment and thus will ALL be wearing their helmets. While its fun to do the faces, it makes no sense from a military standpoint to give up the auto-senses, air filtration and tactical overlays that those things have crammed into them, not to mention keeping their skulls intact a little longer.

Also of note, I picked up the new marine codex, and while I think the centurions are probably the dumbest models I have seen in a very long time, I did like some of the other changes. After going over the rules I think I will be fielding my World Eaters as Black Templars which I believe fits the Dornian Heresy image the best. Plus it will be nice to get-a-hold of the Emperor's Champion model. I am however a little curious about the scouts, the codex specifically says you can't take Librarians with BT's and only BT's can take Crusader squads, but it doesn't say you can't take Scouts in a BT detachment.  Hmmm....
