Sisters Hair Color

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if I could get some opinions on what Hair Color looks the best. I'm thinking I might do each squad with it's own hair color but i'm not 100% sure.

I'd go for a nice spread of natural hair colours across all squads; unless you are specifically going against it I'd doubt Sisters would "fancy-up" their hair in pinks or blues. At the same time, some uncommon "mutant" colours would look striking and serve as useful identifiers for important characters.

yeah I prefer the natural colors.   The bright neon colors look good on esher models, but they are suppose to be punk gangers, not orthodox chamber militant women.   So natural colors at the bottom Plus the white from the top work, also shades of grey and other shades of browns work too.

Personally, I really enjoy the variety; it's not unusual for a tight knit military unit to do something that ties them all together, like a uniform tattoo or haircut, or minor variations on that theme (like a tattoo with each soldier's call sign in it, for instance). In your unit's case, each Sister has the same haircut with a unique color. :) I think it's cool.

lol, so say the men who have never dyed their hair...

It's very easy to go darker. It's almost impossible to make hair look good when you're trying to go lighter. You basically have to bleach it first and then that often reacts badly with whatever dye you're trying to use.

Plus, you can't just slap block colour on and expect it to work when painting hair. :p

The black looks the best of what you've put up. You could try drybrushing a white, grey or silver over it very lightly. The other colours need a dark wash. I'm not a fan of the pink, blue or green you've chosen, I have to admit. It could be the photo quality though.

When taking photographs of models, I know it seems counter-intuitive, but you have to remember that all cameras have a minimum focal distance. You'd be better off pulling the camera back a little (most phone cameras like about 50cm) then use zoom to get the close-up. If you have a proper camera, the macro setting is very useful for this. Rather than relying purely on the camera flash, you could use a desk lamp to apply top-down lighting as well, which will help with camera shake issues - the darker the environment, the longer the camera needs to capture the image.

yeah, my wife is a hair dresser, and she has been adding purple highlights to her already dark brown hair.  needless to say, i keep telling her, I don't see no purple, thats not purple, it has a magenta tint, but its not purple.  Then I show her online photos of purple hair, and go...now thats purple.  Then she argues back, I am not coloring my entire hair, just adding highlights.  I rebuttle..but that still is purple, your hair is not purple at all.

So yes, people do die their hair in colors, but it will never be solid, solid colors in exotic shades are much harder to do, and around here, its more common for someone to add pink or purple strands to their natural hair color, than color the whole thing.  Its also easier since as mentioned it has to be bleached first to get the shade to come through properly.

So yeah, adding a distinctive unit marking like all of them get a strand of the bangs highlighted a certain color would look different and help mark out the unit, but natural colors would look better.   As for blocking in the colors, well it works, but if you want to improve your painting, I would suggest adding some highlights to the hair to make it feel more natural, or at least some shading.

I've dated two girls that would go nigh all-pink; I still remember that color swirling the shower drain day after day. I'm not personally familiar but I've witnessed both the process and the fallout. Which has *got* to be better 40,000 years into the future. smile.png

I figure if they can "rejuvenate" every cell in your body to be healthier and regenerate, staving off aging, then they've got to have some process by which they flip a DNA switch causing your hair follicles to grow your hair whatever color you wish...or maybe just the coloring process is simply easier. Or maybe their wigs just look really, really good. It's the grim dark and a lot of things suck, but not *everything* is worse than it is now. Just most things.

I think hair colour variety is good, and natural hair colours are a safe bet. I like to paint different colours as it adds more spice to painting and looks nice on the table. I do the same for my evil space elves too only using more fanciful shades.

The trick I reckon is having whatever colour look like hair - hair isn't a solid block of a single colour which is why I like to build up a wash on a white base for a more realistic appearance.

This works best on models with detailed hair like Sisters :)

Here's what i'm doing so far. I think i'll give each sqaud thier own hair color, making each sqaud pop more on the battle field. I'm also going to give each Sister Superior White/Grey Hair to show the years they've put into the order. The following picture shows two 5-sister dominon sqauds, both blonde so I can combine them if need be. And one Battle Sister squad with black hair.

I've found that the most realistic-looking way of painting blonde hair is to just use a snakebite leather wash over white. Block yellow colour just doesn't look right to me, although I guess you could use a darker wash and then a brighter highlight on them to give a more graded, natural feel.

Here's my techniques: For black hair, I use chaos black, then use a blue ink wash, then lightly dry brush with a codex grey or white to give a little sheen. For white hair, I paint the base codex grey and then dry brush white until it's as bright as I want. If I want a sheen on it I paint a little line of water effects along where I think the curve of the head would make a shine. For blond hair I paint it a khaki sand color, then a chestnut brown wash then drybrush bright yellow highlights. Last a little white for sheen. Here's some examples sorry the pics are just good not great.

yep, leave it up to the space wolves to bring braids, pony tails and all around long hair into the sisters forums lol

Lovely models btw.   Like the coloring of the blond wolf.

Couldn't help myself. When the topic is hair I just had to bring out the hairest of the hairy..haha.

Dang, guess I'm not the only one who did the bright colors.

I got tired of all the dull hair colors, so I started giving my flamer girls bright punk rock hair colors, then I started giving it to everyone. Because burning heretics is pretty damn punk. It's a good way to add a little bit of contrast to the army.

All my battle sister's are blonds. Mostly 'cause I was painting what I knew, my own hair colour, and that appealed to me more than more easy black hair. Block bright yellow is the wrong colour, I learned this when painting necro figs in the days of yore. I found myself doing tints of desert yellow into bleached bone over some leather colour.

I am *definitely* going to try this; I always hate how my blonde hair comes out.

Mine are all white. Not for age, but for shock.
Purging heretics is pretty damn stressful, even for the best trained human fighting force in the galaxy. You probably nearly die on a minute by minute basis if you're not in the military in this world, so I imagine actively seeking combat is a bit like a train wreck every second of your life.

Also, white, black wash, white drybrush is easy and looks pretty good.
