World Eaters Markings?

Recommended Posts

I need help in ensuring my heresy army of world eaters maintains to the fluff as much as possible,

I know all the honour markings as stated on 40k wiki

but squad markings and crest signifiers and jazz like that still haven't been provided by forge world or the community at large.

any help would be appreciated.

Well, that may be a result of Forgeworld not publishing any rank or squad markings.

The exact passage is:

The rank structure of the World Eaters under Angron remained simple and direct, the Primarch having little but scorn for the trappings of elites and pointless accolades and titles, refusing it is said to be addressed even as 'Lord', but he did see the virtue of a reliable and transparent chain of command in war. Such honors that the Legion and their master did believe in were warrior-marks of brotherhood and the scars of battle; these things transcended rank and spoke to the worth of the Space Marine beneath the armour. The sundered chains of one who had fought overwhelming odds and lived-an allusion that spoke to Angron's own bleak history, and the bloody handprint over the face or heart bestowed by a battle leader for a warrior whose fury had transcended that of his brothers-to the World Eaters these meant more than any mere bauble, title or trinket.

It's on page 97 of Betrayal by Alan Bligh if you know someone who has a copy and is willing to let you check it out.

Now, we do know from a picture in the hardcover Betrayer by A D-B that Khârn had the front-to-back horse crest. We don't know if that's just something left over from the War Hound days that he kept for some kind of memento or if it was an actual marking. So personally, I would personally use the front-to-back for the "leader" of the army, broken chains or a bloody handprint on the helmet for any "champions"(I primarily mean any units in the Elite slot, although you could include sergeants as well) and devise a personal identifier for anything else you feel needs to be marked out. Maybe the left-to-right crest or a bloody hand print on the chest rather than the faceplate, a similarity of symbol but with a subtle difference, even if only in placement, between the sergeants and any elite units.

Yeah so far I've got the back to front crest and bronze helmet for my mkIII boarding captain, and I'm looking into all warriors with there weapons chained. I'm just wondering for the squads themselves if I should follow the icons given by forge world or what.

In that huge picture of the siege of the precenctors palace IIRC the squads contain a few sarges with the horizontal crests.

The way I distinguish my officers is having them stand taller than the other marines (one of the sarges is the champion model but with a power fist and pistol glaring out a challenge like a bad@ss)

A couple of notes that I have pulled together from the World Eaters Legion markings. (I had a topic posting that is focused on legion era honors and awards)

Crest: Seem to be in line with standard legion practices, although the traditions might have started to fade after the transition from Warhounds to World Eaters

World Eaters Symbol: Unlike most legions, The world eaters required their warriors to earn their heraldry as a right of (bloody) passage on the battle field. A recent initiate would not have any "maws" on their armor, but a veteran would have multiple (as much as 3 have been recorded on a veteran tactical marine)

"Brazen" Helm coloration: In addition to the use of multiple world eater insignia, veteran units would have a brass helmet color as opposed to the white helms of the rest of the legion

Broken Chain symbol: Noted to be used as a sign of accomplishment, the example used in HH Betrayal is where a marine killed a superior officer in a sanctioned arena duel.

"Bloody Hand" print: Sign of commendation from a warrior's commander. NOTE: the award prestige is likely to be directly proportionate to the leader that gave it to you. Angron's blood hand print to the commander of his flag ship was a well regarded honor and helped establish her validity and credability to the legion despite the fact she was a mere mortal.

Trophies: While not as prevalent as in the Son's of Horus legion, it is likely that the World Eaters kept trophies of impressive kills or achievements. Unlike the sons of horus, where they would be decoration/intimidation factor, the World Eaters would incorporate it in their weapons as well as their armor (Mica Dragon Teeth in Gorechild and Gorefather are an example of trophies in weapons)

As for more traditional honors (crux terminatus, laurels, ect), I have been unable to identify any specific cases where they are used. I hope this might be a decent starting point.

Hmm, sadly I no longer have my friend's copy of Betrayal(I finished reading it), but the brazen helm and the maws don't exactly ring any bells. To satisfy my own curiosity, what was the source for those? I'm not saying that its not true or anything, I would just like to satisfy my own curiosity.'

EDIT: Nevermind, I found them looking through the thread. Thank you for presenting them.

Well, you could do squad markings, or perhaps some variations on a single mark, like the Maw. Like have one open, another closed, one eating a world, another eating a skull, things like that. Small, but subtle. It unites the army while individualizing the units.
@Kol. I was thinking tactical marks with company number to the left. Knee pad with squad number world eater logo on the right with legion number & honour marks as needed try limit the broken chains bloody hand print brazen helms and maws to unit champions squad leaders and characters but still keep a uniform look over the legion

It my be a worth while investment to purchase the World Eater Etched Brass and decal transfer sheet, if you have not already. I can tell you that one decal sheet will last a LONG time.  Personnally, I can see the elite/veteran world eaters having raised out legion symbols while the regulars merely have it painted on. But regardless... good luck with your force.
