I thought it was a few thousand years BCE, but I was using 30k loosely, like calling everything after the 2nd Founding "40k" kind of loosely.

And he was described as a medieval knight in that legend, so he's had a few thousand years of life by that point.

It was meant to be 8000BC that the Shamans created the Emperor. It was accompanied by a comment that he was several of the most famous people in history, and implied he may have actually been Jesus as well as the basis for legendary figures such as King Arthur.

I agree but doesn't that seem a little odd? like the whole turn the other cheek non violence and slay the evil in the land? Isnt 30 and 40k about uncharacteristically brutal violence and fuzzy lines of gray (not black and white mustache twirling)?

Maybe its part of the whole just as planned thing btw...

If I remember correctly, the Emperor goes through a change of heart. His original intent is not to interfere unless necessary. Let humanity follow its own road. However, his very nature means that whenever he is witnessed, an enduring legend will pop up around him.

Then, when the Warpstorms of Slaanesh's afterbirth are about to fade, he comes to the decision that he must interfere. To the max. From mo control over human destiny to total control.

Well, maybe it wasn't a change of heart. He only interfered where necessary and it is said that only the Emperor knew the knife's edge path Mankind must take to survive. So he thought coming out of the closet and taking complete control of humanity was a necessity. Any actions less than that would have ended in failure.

I think of it more as him trying different approaches before settling on the model he adopts from the Unification Wars onwards. Alternatively, maybe each intervention represented a particular lesson or racial memory he wanted to impart, to build towards his ultimate plan for survival. I see that quite a bit like the God-Emperor in the Dune series, from which so much of the inspiration for the 40k Emperor was drawn - putting humanity through various trials to deliberately evolve them in a particular direction. Maybe the Emperor's hostility to religion and horror of being declared a deity stems from direct experience of having tried that route before and failed.

Wow, I totally missed this. I've been wanting a novel about this after reading what occurs in the Horus Heresy Artbooks. I'm guessing the "aide from an unexpected quarter" the Wolves receive while fighting the Alphas may come from Omegon but we'll see. Can't wait!

Hype is bittersweet. if done right, it can get everyone excited for a novel that ends up falling flat on its face. It can also work the other way around. Depending on how you want to deal with the blacklash, sometimes it is better to hedge your bets and see just how naturally the hype grows by itself.

Not sure I buy that. If they are worried it will flop they shouldn't be publishing it. They would have had to convince themselves that "this is an excellent story!", and build excitement around it.

A lot of people were excited for Battle for the Abyss, Deliverance Lost and Phalanx back in the day. Each book had plenty of hype. With the exception of certain details, I rarely hear a good opinion about the books from people who have read them.

Prince of Crows. Most of the hype concerning it wasn't BL, but A D-B and ourselves. The hype done by BL was mostly for Crimson Fists and Shadows of Treachery. With the exception of certain details, I rarely hear anything bad about it.

What was it? That limited edition White Scars novel. I think i saw one thing about it on the BL blog. Haven't really heard anything about it since.
